Ten Under $10

Want something fun to do that won't break the bank? Look no further—here are ten things to do this weekend that cost $10 or less.

By Jason Koebler

1. Art meets music, theater, and happy hour Thursday night at Phillips After 5 at the Phillips Collection. Starting at 5:30, there’ll be jazz, performing actors, and a cash bar.

2. A mutant monster from the Han River terrorizes Seoul in The Host, screening at the Freer Gallery Thursday night at 7 PM. Maybe the free screening is a warning against polluting the Potomac?

3. Get on your bathing suit and hang ten at the Endless Summer Beach Bash Thursday night at Leopold’s Lounge in DC’s Georgetown. The beach-themed party features drink specials, swimsuit contests, and a surf simulator. The party starts at 8, and the first 150 people to donate $10 to Luke’s Wings will get free entry; everyone else pays $15 to $20.

4. Tom Hanks plays something of a Toys R Us kid in Big—after he wakes up as a middle-age man, he realizes he doesn’t ever want to grow up. Relive the ’80s at the Capitol Riverfront Thursday at sundown (around 8:45 PM).

5. Hillyer Art Space (9 Hillyer Court, NW; 202-338-0680) is currently showing “Six in the Mix: Selections by Renee Stout,” an unconventional approach to group exhibits. For its monthly First Fridays event, a $5 suggested donation gets you drinks, local art, and live jazz—sounds good to us. 6 to 9 PM.

6. To mark its three-year anniversary, Sorted—a popular dance night at the Black Cat—will feature DJ Stereo Faith, who spins Britpop, soul, and indie pop. $6; 9:30 PM.

7. So what if the Chicago-based band Baby Teeth sounds a wee bit like Bruce Springsteen? We still listen—and we’re psyched about its recently released third album, Hustle Beach. Their show at Iota Club & Café Saturday night is sure to be a good time–it starts at 9:30 and costs $10.

8. The National Gallery of Art screens La Femme et le Pantin with live musical accompaniment at 3 PM Saturday. The 1928 silent film is the story of a rich Spaniard who gives up everything for the woman he loves.

9. Show up to the Feedback dance party at DC9 early: from 9 to 10 PM, enjoy free entry and free vodka/Redbull cocktails. Best of all, one of the best deejays in the area, Tittsworth, spins electro, club, and rock music all night. Entry after 10 is $8.

10. The Web site Brightest Young Things has been throwing rooftop pool parties all summer, but this Saturday’s sounds especially fun. Make your own iPod playlist, then sing Karaoke at the Capitol Skyline hotel. Cover is $10, and the party is all ages.
