Monday, December 7
Had enough jingle bells already? The Norwegian double bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and saxophonist/flutonettist Håkon Kornstad will bring a different sound to the Kennedy Center’s free Millennium Stage. Elise, the world-renown jazz musicians’ most recent album, uses Norwegian hymns for inspiration. The show starts at 6 in the Theater Lab.
Tuesday, December 8
Who doesn’t like glue sticks and glitter? Get in touch with your inner artist at the National Postal Museum’s Crafty Card Workshop. Create holiday cards at the family-friendly event from 10 to 1 in the museum’s atrium.
Wednesday, December 9
At 9 PM on the ninth of every month, Busboys and Poets hosts Nine on the Ninth, an evening of open-mike poetry. Poet-in-residence Derrick Weston and guests host the event.
Thursday, December 10
A museum staffer at the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly will lead a discussion called “All You Need Is Love,” about the connection between the Cold War, the ATS 1 Satellite, and the Beatles. It’s part of the museum’s bimonthly Ask an Expert lecture series. The talk starts at 12:30.
Friday, December 11
Bethesda’s art galleries stay open late for the area’s monthly Art Walk, which runs from 6 to 9. A free shuttle is available.
Saturday, December 12
Think of it as a Christmas-themed Halloween, only crazier. Santarchy, a nationwide event, returns to Washington, bringing holiday enthusiasts together for caroling, bar hopping, and spreading holiday cheer. Guests are required to don holiday garb for festivities (think Santa suits, reindeer antlers, and gingerbread men) that kick off on the Mall at noon. Participants are also asked to bring a healthy dose of holiday spirit and candy or toys to hand out (nice ones for kids, naughty for adults) as the group parades around the city.
Sunday, December 13
The Three Cantors and the US Air Force band will provide the soundtrack for the lighting of the National Menorah on the White House Ellipse to celebrate Hanukkah.
