Where & When: The Week in Washington Nightlife

As summer fades to fall (tear), arty parties and killer concerts take over the after-hours scene

By Sarah Zlotnick

Monday, August 30
USA! USA! USA! Tonight, These United States brings homegrown American rock to the Kennedy Center’s often internationally focused Millennium Stage. Fans of Marcy Playground and Bruce Springsteen should listen to “I Want You to Keep Everything,” then you’ll know you have to attend. Free; 6 PM.

Tuesday, August 31
Part Santigold with the looks of VV Brown, Tampa’s next big music star, MC Dominique Young Unique (she’s only 18!), brings quick-paced rhymes laced with synth and dub-step to the DC9 stage tonight. We’ve had the electro-hop, freak-rap tracks “Show My Ass” and “Hot Girl” on repeat since the weekend and can’t wait for more of the sound Rolling Stone labeled an “indescribable, unignorable mix of Miami bass, Neptunes, French house, and dub-punk.” Tickets—available here—are only $8. Get excited. 8:30.

Wednesday, September 1
Communal art—and sports drinks—takes on new meaning tonight during Liquid Soul at the Fridge. Watch live painting, make your own on the Community Wall, get buzzed on free Bacardi drinks, rehydrate with complimentary Vitamin Water (the event sponsor), and repeat. 7 to 11. Thursday, September 2
Washington just can’t get enough museum parties—especially when they’re planned by Philippa Hughes. Join everyone’s favorite Pinkline Project lady for Art After Dark, the Art Museum of the Americas’ first-ever after-hours event. Come for a cool mix of DJs, Argentinean percussion, cocktails, and video installation, and stay for the chance to mercilessly compare the fete to the more established players on the museum-party playground. 8 to midnight. Tickets ($15)—available here—also grant much-coveted guest-list status at the Late Night Shots-favored watering hole George (3251 Prospect St., NW) for the after-party.
