Totally Awesome: Films of the '80s at AFI
By
Alejandro Salinas
The ’80s may have been a time of dubious fashion trends—remember leg warmers and puffy pirate shirts?—but the decade saw some significant developments in American cinema: Films like Porky’s and Fast Times at Ridgemont High ushered in the sex-comedy genre, while John Hughes redefined adolescent angst—and comedy—with films like The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
The AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring is paying tribute to these and other memorable films with “Totally Awesome: Films of the 1980s,” a two-month-long retrospective look at some of the more influential movies of the time.
The series starts Friday, July 6, and runs through Thursday, September 6, showcasing an eclectic collection of films that includes everything from light-hearted comedy (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) to zombie horror (Evil Dead: Dead by Dawn) to indie fare (Blue Velvet).
Tickets are available online (general admission is $9.25); you can view the complete line-up and the showtime schedule at this link. You might want to go all out with some pop rocks candy and peach wine cooler. But please—leave the ’80s attire at home.
