What to Do for St. Patrick’s Day in Washington
By
Elizabeth Farrell
Who cares that St. Patrick’s Day falls during the work week, and on a Monday no less? We’re celebrating anyway! So tip your hat to Ireland’s patron saint, ring in the day with beer, festivities, food, and, oh yeah, more beer at some of these area hotspots. And remember to offer the toast, “Erin go bragh,” or “Ireland Forever.”
Front Page, Arlington 4201 Wilson Boulevard, 703-248-9990; frontpagearlington.com Party DC hosts its annual leprechaun-infused blowout that will include a DJ, green hats and beads, corned beef and cabbage, and plenty of beer. It runs from 5 PM until close. Call for more information.
The Dubliner 4 F Street, NW; 202-737-3773; dublinerdc.com In honor of the Irish saint, this pub plans to open at 10 AM and have three bands perform on two stages throughout the day. Musical acts include John McGrath, Morris Minor, and Paddy Halligan and Jimmy Rafferty. Six bars will be stocked with Irish beers, and the full menu of Irish fare will be offered all day.
Kelly’s Irish Times 14 F Street, NW; 202-543-5433; kellysirishtimes.com Come as early as 10 AM and try a specialty shot of Guinness, Bailey’s, and Bushmills Irish whiskey. Beginning at 11 AM, there’ll be music by Pete Papageorge, who will play all day on the 16th and 17th. Box lunches with corned beef, turkey, or roast beef sandwiches will be available.
Town & Country at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel 1127 Connecticut Avenue, NW; 202-347-2233; cafepromenade.com Experience executive chef Norman Wade’s Irish feast. He will prepare slow-cooked corned beef and cabbage and Irish stew that can be accompanied by cocktails prepared by Sambonn Lek, one of the city’s most famous bartenders. Reservations recommended.
Restaurant Eve 110 South Pitt Street, Alexandria; 703-706-0450; restauranteve.com Chef Cathal Armstrong invites you to his tasting room for his third annual Irish dinner, a five-course dinner with fare including steak and kidney pie, Dublin Bay prawns, and a twist on the traditional corned beef and cabbage. Reservations are required.
If you can’t decide where to celebrate, Station Masters, a Web site and directory of Metro-station neighborhoods, can help. It’s got a list of Metro-accessible Irish party places, including Molly Malone’s Bar & Restaurant (three blocks from the Clarendon station on the Orange Line); Duffy’s Irish Pub & Restaurant (four blocks from the U St./ Cardozo station on the Green and Yellow lines); and Finn MacCool’s (three blocks from the Eastern Market station on the Blue Line). See the complete list here. UPDATE McFaddens 2401 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW; 202-223-2338; mcfaddensdc.com Take part of "Morning Mayhem" from 8 AM to 3 PM and enjoy a free breakfast buffet, mimosa and bloody mary specials.
