Where & When: What to Do This Weekend
By
Catherine Andrews
Spring has sprung, and the weekend is here! We have outdoor happy hours, a vintage-shopping brunch at Marvin, free Swedish lessons, and Rock Band at a bar.
Thursday, April 17: Years later, The Big Lebowski is still a cult fave and a cultural touchstone. Get in on the fun with the Arlington Cinema ’n’ Drafthouse’s party tonight. Dude Fest will have trivia, bowling, live music from the movie’s soundtrack, and, of course, a screening of The Big Lebowski. $8; 8 PM.
The third Thursday of every month, the MidCityLive! organization puts on a Thursday Shopper Social in the retail area around 14th and U streets, Northwest. Boutiques and other stores offer discounts, socializing, snacks, and drinks from 5 to 8 PM. So get on over to U Street and shop away. Want to grab a bite to eat afterward? Be sure to check out our U Street Dining Guide.
Friday, April 18: It’s supposed to be 80 degrees today. Hot damn. Head to an outdoor happy hour—you can find the perfect one searching on our handy Happy Hour Finder.
Comedian Aaron Karo was kind enough to grace us with his funny (albeit virtual) presence when he did a live chat on Wednesday. See him in person when he does his standup thing at the 9:30 Club tonight at 9. Buy tickets ($30) here.
I’m sorry, but how can I not recommend a band called Lez Zeppelin? It’s an all-girl Led Zeppelin cover band, natch. It’s playing the State Theatre (220 N. Washington St., Falls Church) this evening at 7. Get your tickets ($16) here.
Saturday, April 19: The nomadic vintage boutique Listopad is setting up shop on Marvin’s patio for a special style brunch from noon to 4. Browse a selection of carefully selected vintage fashions along with men’s and women’s accessories while sipping Champagne (free for the first hour). DJ Chris Burns will spin stylishly appropriate songs.
The local literary journal Barrelhouse celebrates the launch of its fifth issue with the three Bs: Barrelhouse staff, beer, and burlesque. Join the party from 7 to 10 PM at Steve’s Bar Room (1337 Connecticut Ave., NW). Admission is $5 at the door; $8 gets you in along with a copy of the latest issue.
House of Sweden: In an event aptly titled Crash Course, you can learn the basics of Swedish in a free language seminar put on by the House of Sweden (901 30th St., NW). 1 to 5 PM; call 202-267-2600 for more info and to sign up.
Sunday, April 20: Environmentally themed lectures and green-technology exhibits along with free live music from the Roots, the DC Boys Choir, and Thievery Corporation, to name a few, will rock the Mall today. The event, in conjunction with the nonprofit Earth Day Network, starts at noon; free bicycle valet service will be provided by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. Want more Earth Day events? Check out our guide here.
Rock Band is appearing at Stetsons Famous Bar and Grill (1610 U St., NW; 202-667-6295) every Sunday night at 7. Drink specials include $8 pitchers of Bud Light and $2.50 rail drinks and Miller drafts. If you want more video-game nights at bars, check out our recently updated guide here.

Hi there - I’m not sure exactly where the stage will be set up, but I believe it’s more towards the Capitol side of the Mall. But I’m sure the stage will be pretty visible, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find!
