Monday, February 1
Families expecting their first human baby can rest a little easier about their canine one with a two-hour Baby-Ready Pets workshop at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (2650 S. Arlington Mill Dr.). Staff will offer tips on how to prepare your pet for the arrival of your baby. Students will receive information pamphlets to take home as well as a CD of baby sounds to play to help Fido adjust to his new housemate. The class is for humans only. Free. 6:30 to 8:30
Wednesday, February 3
The Big Bad Woof (17 Carroll St., NW) hosts Julie Rand, a representative from Nature’s Variety pet food, in a special event that highlights the company’s products and offers free samples. 3 to 8.
Friday, February 5
New dog owners get a crash course in all things canine at the Washington Animal Rescue League’s (71 Oglethorpe St., NW) New Dog Guardian Orientation Class. The free session, led by a certified trainer, goes over training techniques for house-training, chewing, separation, socialization, and enrichment. The class goes from 6:15 to 7:45 and is for people only. E-mail training@warl.org to RSVP.
Saturday, February 6
The Washington Humane Society sponsors a dog-adoption event from noon to 2:30 at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage (1606 17th St., NW).
More tail-wagging friends looking for homes will be at Chateau-Animaux’s DC location (524 Eighth St., SE) from noon to 2 with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue.
Sunday, February 7
The transition from the racetrack to the living-room couch takes a little time for greyhounds. Greyhound Welfare works to ease the process by placing former racing greyhounds in foster homes and eventually permanent ones. Find out more about the group, its mission, and its four-legged friends at an informational meeting at the Big Bad Woof (17 Carroll St., NW). The event starts at noon.
Feline friends from Capital Cats take over Chateau-Animaux’s Capitol Hill location (524 Eighth St., SE) from noon to 3 with an adoption event.
Dog lovers can look to Chateau-Animaux’s Alexandria location (101-A S. Saint Asaph St.), where Lucky Dog Animal Rescue hosts another adoption event from noon to 2.
Bring your pet to Chateau-Animaux in Alexandria for a personalized Valentine. Julie Jordan of Newton’s Paw will be on hand to create a keepsake ornament of your pet’s paw impression from 11 to 3. Sure to be a big event for DC area as it gains traction in only its 2nd year, the Crystal Couture kicked off its annual fashion show Monday night with style. The runway models were gorgeous first-class professionals, the music perfectly choreographed for a top fashion show, and the high ceiling corner of busy street retail space all gave the show panache. Highlights included the first designer spotlighted on the runway, Tracy Suk Designs, with winter and spring wraps that looked like they came from stores along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris. The final design shop was the not-to-miss Celine de Paris fashion boutique. Lots of sexy and fun fashions between. Only criticisms of show - it was chilly (turn up the heat - it’s February!) and the crowds were smaller than I expected (but it was a Monday and hopefully, by Wednesday, the crowds will be larger and the body heat will warm up the space!). I’m definitely returning later in the week on Wednesday or Thursday with a larger entourage of friends (bring your cash, checkbooks and credit cards – there are good buys here!), and I’ll give an update on the show which will no doubt be attended by larger crowds then. For now, I’m rating the Crystal Couture a B+ and a must-see for anyone into fashion scene.
