New Condo Spotlight: Privado Condos

By Elizabeth Farrell

Take a tour of a new building in Columbia Heights.

What: Privado Condos
Where: 1443 Chapin Street, NW
Number of units: 16.
Floorplans: The building has 11 two-bedroom, two-bath units and five one-bedroom, one-bath units ranging in size from 700 to 1,500 square feet. The four penthouses all have two stories.
Prices: $374,900 to $989,000
Luxurious touches: Rather than keys, owners will use their fingerprints to gain access to the building. Buyers can pick the finishes for their wood floors, kitchen cabinets, and spa-style bathrooms. Ceilings range in height from nine to 20 feet. Each unit comes with a balcony, terrace, or patio.
Closest Metro: The building is within walking distance of two stations: U Street/African American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo and Columbia Heights, both on the Yellow and Green lines.
Expected completion: Early 2009—units went on sale last week.

Fingerprint entry systems also have PINs that allow entry as well as a key fob that you pass in front of the system.

Mythbusters proved that it is very easy to copy a fingerprint off a fingerrint scanner and then make a cast of it to use to open the lock.

So, um, what happens if you have a friend stay over? Do you have to FINGERPRINT the person so they can let themselves into the house? And what happens if the power or whatever goes out, or if your fingerprint scanner is broken, or I don’t know... maybe you cut the finger that you scanned?

This sounds like a horrible, pretentious idea.

Horrible name and I don’t want some random company storing my biometric data.

$989,000 for 1,500 sq. ft. seems more than a little out of whack for that part of CH, but it’s a neat looking building.

Seems like a nice development, but what a horrible name - Privado???? Seems quite very unwelcoming since it’s Spanish for "private" - all they need to do is add the missing "...keep out".

But to be fair - I’ll suggest something better: Solidaridad (Solidarity) or "Bienviendo" (Welcome).
