It’s a Photo Contest Vote-Off!

Last month’s photo contest ended in a tie! We’re holding a runoff vote between the top two photographs to determine the winner. Read on to vote, and find out the theme for December’s contest.

Published Monday, December 01, 2008

Readers, looks like you couldn’t decide on a winner in last month’s photo contest; two photographs tied for first place! We’ve decided to hold a runoff between the top two vote-getters to determine the winner. The poll will close this Friday, December 5, at 4 PM. Scroll down to see the finalists and cast your vote in this head-to-head competition.

In the meantime, you can start submitting photos for this month’s contest. Our theme is . . . drumroll, please . . . portraits and people! We want to see photographs of your family, friends, strangers—whomever! Just remember to get creative; a headshot won’t be the best way to go.

Here’s how the contest works: You submit photographs, and our panel of judges selects the best ones to publish on our Web site. Then you, the reader, vote for your favorite. The winner will be featured in the February issue of The Washingtonian.

Submit as many photos as you’d like to photocontest@washingtonian.com. Please attach only one photo per e-mail, and include the photographer’s name, e-mail address, phone number, and place of residence along with a sentence or two about where the photograph was taken. Photos should be 300 dpi and at least four by six inches. The deadline for submissions is noon on Tuesday, December 16. Finalists will be contacted when the reader voting goes live.

Oh, and one other thing to keep in mind: All photos must be taken in the Washington area—including the Maryland and Virginia suburbs—and the photographer must be local.

Good luck!

Our policy on photo rights: The photographer retains the copyright. However, because the photographer has submitted his or her photo to the contest, the magazine has the right to print the winning photograph in the current issue of the magazine and online as well as in any future issues as long as usage is related to the photo contest. The magazine also has the right to use the finalists online in relation to the photo contest.

Ceasar’s photo’s contrast is just amazing and insightful.

I like Darwin’s photo becuase of the balance of the light and dark blue combination plus the beauty of the nature. WHAT A COMBINATION. AWESOME

I like the composition of Cesar’s photo, simple and classy. I also like that the light gives a vertical gradient effect. Well done.

I like the idea of Darwin’s blue checkered windows, but the photo itself looks like more of a snapshot. More could be done with this unique setting. Keep trying. :-)

The human scale with relationship to the design and it’s geometry is captured brilliantly by the photographer’s trained eye for perspective illustration in architecture. This photo translates visual complexity into astounding simplicity with the soft tones of traditional black and white photography practice.

Cesar’s photo captures the raw and elegant features of the building. Th play of light is very subtle and graceful!

Simple ceiling, but such class.

Cesar’s photo show the simpicity, rawness and differental scales.

I based it on the "which would I buy and hang in my house" test. While I like the colors in the one at Rio, I wouldn’t hang it on my wall at home.

If you’d like to see more of Cesar’s photography, he has a small show up at Big Bear Cafe (1st and R NW) until December 7, including this amazing photograph.

Go Darwin!

How this is any contest at all is beyond me. Cesar’s photo is so much better compared to the mess of squares filled with so many distracting elements.
