Strength Photo Contest: Voting Ends Today at Noon!

Here are the top picks in our strength-themed photo contest. Help choose a winner by voting for your favorite.

Please note: Voting in this contest is now closed; scroll down to see the winner. The theme for next month's contest will be announced on July 1. Stay tuned!

Last week, our judges perused stacks of photos to select the top five entries in our strength-themed photo contest. Now it’s your turn to weigh in and choose a winner.

Remember, the winner this month will be published in the August issue of The Washingtonian magazine. Plus, he or she will receive four tickets and food vouchers to the July 11 Washington Mystics game. Neat, huh?

Here’s how to vote: Check out the finalists below, then take the poll at the bottom of the page. The poll will stay open until noon on June 30; the photo with the most votes at that time will be declared the winner.

And remember, it’s only one vote per person, so play fair and choose wisely. If we notice voting irregularities with any one photograph, The Washingtonian reserves the right to disqualify it from the contest.

Don’t forget to check out the runners-up in this month’s contest, and go to our winners’ gallery to see all the past photo-contest winners.

Good luck to our finalists, and happy voting, readers!

Want to enter next month's contest? Check back on July 1 for details on how to enter.

"Against the Odds" by Nick Evans of DC

This was one of the most abstract interpretations of the strength theme this month. Our judges loved the plant's determination to grow. The beautiful colors didn't hurt, either.

"Peloton Portrait" by Dan Glass of Vienna

Glass managed to snap a great shot of Virginia cyclist Bo Lee as he whizzed by during a race in Clarendon. Of all the sports-related pictures we received, this was our favorite.

"Tiger Eye" by Christen Anderson of Alexandria

We were haunted by the tiger's eyes in this photo, which was snapped at the National Zoo last spring.

"Been There, Done That" by Ryan Holloway of Arlington

The strength of this portrait of local drummer Milton "Go-Go Mickey" Freeman is undeniable; we were drawn in immediately. We also love Gogo's tattoos.

"Honor Guard" by Kim Baker of Falls Church

What demonstrates more strength than the military? We loved the gray-and-black tones in this nighttime photograph.

Vote for your favorite!

*To help keep this contest fair, we've elected to use an IP address-based poll. This means that if you are voting from an office or network setting, not everybody will be able to vote. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we hope you'll encourage coworkers to vote from their home computers.

I voted for Been there done that! I love the picture...and plus its my brothers picture! Go Ryan, proud of you!

Posted by: Trena, Jun 30, 2009 10:38:18 AM

How could you not love the photo "Been There Done That"? This captures the true ESSENCE of a native Washingtonian. Go-Go Mickey ROCKS!

Posted by: Kim G., Jun 30, 2009 07:05:57 AM

Honor Guard all the way!!!!

Posted by: Chelsea, Jun 30, 2009 06:05:52 AM

I believe all of these pictures have an element of strength, but the symbolism of the dark night sky with the spot lights on our defenders is not only strength, but hope! Very moving.

Posted by: Dawn Benjamin, Jun 29, 2009 05:23:15 PM

Love all the pictures, but the photo "Been there Done That" was the one that stood out for me.

Posted by: Md218, Jun 29, 2009 10:12:35 AM

I loved all of these photos but I had to go with; Been There, Done That, because Mickey Freeman is such an intrical part of DC urban life and a local icon of the go-go music culture. In the photo, the tats do more than just symbolize his personal history (of which many can relate); they also represent a larger connection to the city and its surrounding communities.

I vote for the Dan Glass shot; I was a spectator at that pro bike race in Clarendon and it was had to pick our individual riders as they went by with your eyes, it must take a lot of skill to capture one in a camera pan!

Posted by: Pete Custer, Jun 29, 2009 07:45:33 AM

I voted "Honor Guard". Good luck Kim Baker!

Posted by: Tisa, Jun 29, 2009 07:31:03 AM

While I loved the abstract of "against the odds", I really had to stop and ponder "Been There, Done That"... is has a strong visual appeal AND several interpretive meanings of strenght that I enjoyed.

Posted by: Ginger, Jun 26, 2009 02:47:24 PM

I picked Nick’s ’Against the Odds’ as it is very poignant and, to me, represents the daily struggles many of us encounter daily just to survive. Great shot. My 2nd choice is the tiger, not only because of the vividnous of the colours but because of the restrained strength shown in it’s face while in captivity.

Posted by: Debra, Jun 26, 2009 11:42:10 AM

I voted for Peloton Portrait, all the photos are magnificent but Peloton got my vote for one reason, action photo. All the other photos are fantastic portrait/still photos, Dan Glass managed to capture the cyclist in still while the background was a blur, this takes skill and practice. Not demeaning the other photos, all of them are great, the Peloton Portrait captured my eye.

The pictures are nice, I voted for Been There Done That, it is such a pleasure to see one of our own being aknowledged, Go-Go music is our era it is about time that it becomes notice for it’s originality, I am so proud.

Posted by: Stacey T, Jun 25, 2009 05:42:44 AM

I would like to see the "Washingtonian",cover some of the more positive issues on the music that was originated here in the D.M.V.,then the negative publicity that the news reports, Go-Go Mickey has a strong voice in this music genre that is from area.

Posted by: "Doc" Spencer, Jun 24, 2009 04:17:52 PM

How many people can say Been there done that? Only one person in this arena, and thats GOGO Mickey The Original creater of the hottest GoGo conga beats of all times, If you knew like I know you would say Been there Done That TOO!!!!!!

Posted by: Aaron, Jun 24, 2009 02:50:38 PM

"Been There, Done That" that’s the Winner!!!

Posted by: Big John, Jun 24, 2009 12:33:31 PM

All the pictures are nice but" Been There, Done That" by Ryan Holloway. Is My Top Favorite.

Posted by: Shalah Holloway, Jun 24, 2009 12:31:42 PM

Love all these shots and interpretations. Fantastic photos! The one that got my vote for this theme was "Honor Guard". It’s not so much the overall strength of the military, but the strength of those who sacrifice their comfort, time and even lives to guard and protect our country that drew me into this interpretation. Well done, Kim Baker!

Great use of B&W and shows what Washington is about, taking care of our nation.

Posted by: Helen, Jun 22, 2009 08:04:06 PM

Remember that O Henry story, The Last Leaf? Nick captures that same sense of quiet determination and the strength to prevail.

Posted by: Emily, Jun 22, 2009 02:38:36 PM

All photots are very good, but my vote goes to "Honor Guard" by Kim Baker!! Outstanding job!

Posted by: Dana and DeDe, Jun 22, 2009 02:33:57 PM

Yeah, taking pictures of statues is pretty tough. :-/

I like the drummer picture, the plant coming through is too dead center

Posted by: Jim, Jun 22, 2009 02:18:04 PM

Remembering the men and women who have and who are gaurding our country is the most wonderful thing we can do!

Posted by: Deb Bodmer, Jun 22, 2009 02:01:10 PM

This is one tough competition! All the photos are really great, but I voted for he Honor Guard. In these hard times for our country, this photo is so evocative of the peace and strength that we need. Great job!

Posted by: Dalvenja, Jun 22, 2009 01:43:28 PM

First prize is four tickets to a Mystics game? What’s second prize, eight tickets to a Mystics game?

Posted by: Tomato, Jun 22, 2009 01:25:10 PM

I love the honor guard picture. It sends a great message during these ruff times that we are all facing. It is very peaceful.

Posted by: Angela Ryden, Jun 22, 2009 11:18:22 AM

All great shots but I have to go with the tiger at The National Zoo.
