Fire Dan Snyder!

Bloggers take to the barricades against the Redskins owner.

By Eliot Stein   Published Thursday, October 29, 2009

In this disheartening Redskins season, a revolt against team owner Dan Snyder has spread through Redskin fandom. In response, Fedex Field security has been ordered to shred, stomp, or seize any protest signs directed at Snyder or the team’s top executive, Vinny Cerrato. (See accounts by the Post’s Dan Steinberg of fans at Monday night’s loss who were allegedly harassed by security and ejected for screaming “Danny sucks” near the ESPN booth.)

Fans in turn have taken their protest to a place beyond management’s control: the Web. From bitter blogs to fiery Facebook tirades, what some describe as Fascist Landover is under attack.

Sell The Team Dan was launched by a trio of lifelong Skins fans who refer to Snyder as “a blowhole who should stick to amusement parks.” Accompanied by a light-hearted recording of “Fail to the Redskins” by the so-called Ashburn Funeral Choir, the site solicits suggestions for a new team owner. Our favorites: “Steve Spurrier, because at least you know how to give up and let someone who knows what he’s doing make the decisions”; and “Kanye West, because, ‘Now, imma let you finish here. . . but I just want to say that Dan Snyder is the worst team owner of all time.’”

Another blog, Darth Snyder, rails against “a tyrant that has handcuffed countless coaches, players, and administrators over the past decade.”

Fire Dan Snyder hit the Web with a chronological highlight reel of Snyder’s mistakes over the past ten years. “I was only 13-years-old when Daniel M. Snyder entered my life,” the blogger writes. “And little did I know he would proceed to ruin my Sundays for every fall for the rest of my life.”

Fire Dan Snyder shouldn’t be confused with its like-minded counterpart, Sack Dan Snyder, whose creator has calculated the payroll for the Redskins roster of “highly paid losers” per game ($6,687,500), minute ($111,458), and second ($1,860) this season. Follow the site’s link to Redskins Glory Days, where you can purchase anti-Snyder paraphernalia. But be warned: We hear Snyder’s roving henchman make it unsafe to carry outside your house any “Screw Snyder” T-shirts, mugs, or foam hand with a raised middle finger.

A quick Facebook search reveals that there are more than 20 groups dedicated to uniting those who despise the Redskins’ owner. Between the straightforward “I Hate Dan Snyder,”, the more pressing “Dan Snyder Must Go!!”, and the slightly irrational “F**k Dan Snyder, He is the Anti-Christ” (which has been removed for violating Facebook codes), the social network has become an electronic soapbox with a thesaurus of Danny Boy hate.

The most popular of these groups is one of the three named “Fire Dan Snyder.” With more than 2,400 members, it has grown at a rate of more than 450 people a day this week. Following the loss to Philadelphia on Monday, a member posted a link to Colorworks, which logged more than 100 sales last week of burgundy-and-gold shirts emblazoned with Worst. Owner. Ever. And that was just in the first three days on the market.

“At the end of the day, the Redskins are private property, so I understand why Snyder censors fans in the stadium,” says Colorworks president James Warlick. “The king can do whatever he wants.”

I just recently started attanding games with my young son .. I understand the Hogs and pepole do not want to forget the Skins glory days but I wonder why banners are no longer allowed in the stadium but cross-dressing transvestites are ?

It is hard to explain to a young child why grown men are wearing dresses and pigs noses in public to a sporting event.

TO desperado2000va and CMo63: yes, these are good ideas to do for the next home game on Nov 15 vs Denver. If you could start a facebook event/group and twitter the idea to have all fans stay out in the concourse/concessions area until at least 5 min into the game, it would help spread the word quickly and lots of people would do it since it is easy and doesn’t require sacrifice of missing the entire game. I’ll be at that game w/ family and will participate!!

These are all valid suggestions. Also, call into the pre and post game shows and get it on the air that way. Be respectful in how you say things. No cursing or even name calling. Just keep it simple but state it loud.

He needs to hire a GM who will run football operations who actualy played/coached football. Than get maybe Jon Gurden.

I love the team and will not abandon it, but these are the times the try mens souls.

After seeing the activities over the past several weeks and especially those undertaken by the Redskins management and the overall condition of the team. I think that it is time to do something about it. Snyder can take away our signs, eject fans with what he considers offensive (to him) tee-shirts, and all of the other actions they have taken. I emailed the Redskins over a week with a collobarative approach to re-engage the Redskin fans and show that the Redskin Management really does give a damn about its fans. What did I receive???? Nothing, absolutely nothing in response. An attempt to try to engage the Redskins management to work with its fans was apparently blown off. What can we do??? I am going to try to organize a protest that Snyder and his cronies won’t be able to stop. Instead of signs, tee shirts, etc. Let us show our Redskin fan solicarity by refusing to sit down in our seats at kickoff. Instead we can stand in the concourse and wait. Maybe sing some Redskin songs but make it clear that we won’t be treated that way. I will need your help to spread the word. He can’t make us sit down and when the TV sees a substantially empty stadium at kickoff, it will send a powerful message of the strength of the solidarity of the Redskins fans. I ask that everyone who attends participates and spread the word. We have 2 weeks to get the message out and hopefully we can get buy-in from the Redskin fans. So I am asking for your help in achieving this goal. Everyone can be free to go to their seats after the first couple of plays but let’s show our solidarity. I am hoping that Steinz will get the word out from his blog and get this party started!!! The new age of the Power of the Redskin Fans!!!

Stop supporting the redskins with money, if you want that little wimp gone, well that’s how it is going to happen, I know it’s a big poop sandwich but we all have to take a bite if we want our team back. HAIL to the redskins, DOWN! with Dan Snyder!

Snyder has done the "Fire Dan Snyder" movement a favor by his sign ban. The ban removes a reason to buy a ticket and go a game. Much more effective in Firing Dan Snyder are: not buying tickets to games, not watching or listening to games (if you do, note and boycott the advertisers -- do tell them of your action, and why), and also, don’t buy tickets to other events at the stadium, to 6 Flags, or buy anything else with which Snyder is associated.

Non-violent action can obtain major change. As we know from the past decade, Snyder has sought to reach ever deeper into the wallets of fans in every possible way. Clearly, he attends to income. A steadily increasing loss of revenue will get his attention, and given a firing effort of size and persistence worthy of his mismanagement of the team, a change will beome necessity.

All we have to lose is Snyder; when we do, there will be opportunity for a return of a team worthy of our devotion and support.

Maybe Danny’s spending too much time with Tom Cruise looking for aliens to give him guidance instead of dovening to his original God. Don’t forget the team is also owned by Dwight Schar who watched his NV/Ryan stock drop by half so he too knows decline. Too bad Art, Darrell, Tim and Charles have used their millions for good causes when they could have bought the Skins and kept it as a class operation instead of a Kayne West clone.

Let’s turn FedEx into a giant anti-Snyder sign:

Let’s face it: Snyder owns the team and aint selling it anytime soon. Still, fans need to send a message to Snyder and the world. Here are four very simple things to do:

1) Wear Black Shirts to the Games. NO burgundy and gold; NO white with burgundy and gold trim; just BLACK. As if we are in mourning for those glory days of yore -- which we are...

2) Enter the stadium 5 minutes AFTER kick-off so the TV networks get to show the backdrop of an empty stadium and explain why. Make our frustration with ownership and management THE story, rather than the game.

3) Trade Down at the Concession Stand: Small vs Large; Tailgate in the parking lot; have one less beer. It will all add up by season’s end.

4) When the referee prepares to explain a replay conclusion, chant "Dan Must Go" as loud as you can.

None of this will cause Dan to sell the team -- it’s his toy, after all. But, it’ll make us all feel better and we avoid the new "rules" related to signs and banners.
