Power Players: Tougher Track

By Marisa M. Kashino

The verdict is in: It’s gotten harder to make partner. Law-firm promotions dropped—or at best stagnated—in 2009, and for the most part the trend continues. Here’s a look at the 2010 partner-class sizes for some of the largest and highest-earning law offices in Washington.

up

Hogan & Hartson:Seven new partners in Washington, up from two in 2009.

Latham & Watkins:Six, up from one last year.

down

Arnold & Porter:One in 2010 compared with four in 2009. However, the firm promoted one lawyer in its Northern Virginia office, where it had no promotions in 2009.

Crowell & Moring:Four, down from six.

Howrey:One, down from two.

Steptoe & Johnson:None, compared with one last year.

WilmerHale:Three, down from four.

This year’s partner classes at Williams & Connolly and Akin Gump remained the same as last year, with six new partners at Williams & Connolly, two at Akin.

For us non-lawyers, what does this mean? If six associates become partners, is that half of a group of 12, or two percent of group of 300? And what happens to associates who don’t get their ticket punched? Do they continue as associates and get considered again next year, as would be the case in most jobs where you apply for a promotion that you don’t get, or do they have to leave their firms ("up or out")?
