Tweet Beat: Mission Accomplished Edition

Test rockets, marble goblets, and military medals are on lawmakers’ minds

By Elliot Kort

It seems like a whole lot was accomplished this week in Washington, and the congressional twitterverse is no different. From President Obama declaring the close of combat operations in Iraq to Senator Orrin Hatch watching stuff explode, a lot came to an end. Senator John McCain celebrated the accomplishments of the distinctly unaccomplished Arizona Diamondbacks. Representative Virginia Foxx ends the debate on whether or not members of Congress have search engines. And speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi calls for bipartisan support of animal doctors.

Senator McCain:@SenJohnMcCain #Dbacks beat San Diego 7-2, that makes 4 wins in the last 5 games! Hooray, but Upton may be hurt. . .

The Diamondbacks are still in last place and 24 games behind the lead. Oh, well—just goes to show that nobody roots for an underdog quite like John McCain. (P.S.: Is it possible this is the first time John McCain has ever said “Hooray”?)

Senator Orrin Hatch: @OrrinHatch Wow! The rocket firing test was amazing. Here’s a pic. http://twitpic.com/2jzr3v

Damn it! Who let Senator Hatch near the explosives?

Representative Ken Marchant: @RepKenMarchant #TX24 – Join me in celebrating our 100th recipient of overdue military medals: http://bit.ly/bhReti

Things Members of Congress Shouldn’t Bring to the Public’s Attention, Volume II: Your inability to hand out medals to American heroes in a timely fashion.

Representative Virginia Foxx: @virginiafoxx We have Google. http://bit.ly/cRdNdB

Oh, yeah? Well, we have all the Interwebs.

Representative Randy Neugebauer: @RandyNeugebauer Abilene Town Hall Meeting getting ready to start at 2pm CT. Come out to the Civic Center if you can. #TX

Define party hot spot: The Abilene Civic Center at 2 PM on a Tuesday.

Representative Joe Wilson: @CongJoeWilson We are being attacked for Congressman Wilson’s act of kindness. http://bit.ly/buAKAr

You know what they say: No kitschy marble goblet goes unpunished. Also, no good things come to those who yell.

Representative Michele Bachmann: @MicheleBachmann Congratulations to Samantha Greeney-Hamlin for earning the Congressional Award, a Silver Star for setting and achieving her goals.

Are silver stars awarded for all goal achievement? Could I receive one for, say, getting all of my grocery shopping done in one day? That could really make my weekend.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi: @SpeakerPelosi Support for America’s vets & troops should be bipartisan, unlike the GOP Leader’s partisan speech http://go.usa.gov/cLI

Look, I understand supporting our troops. But what do veterinarians have to do with any of this?

It seems to me that Nancy Pelosi is using "vets" as abbreviation for "veterans" rather than the more usual "veterinarians" and her comment therefore makes sense.
