Why all the fuss over the Newhouse bureau? Like Bloomberg, it was an oversized, expensive proposition that nobody read, run by a bona fide knucklehead. The disappearance of Washington bureaus is troubling, sure, but the real tragedies are still waiting to happen -- the likely gutting of the McClatchy and Tribune DC bureaus thanks to the enormous debt taken aboard by the greedheads who bought Tribune and the old Knight-Ridder chain.

well put, insider. I liked the offbeat topics that the newhouse bureau did cover, but it’s been a couple of years since the DC bureau covered DC. And in our case, I think that the news was covered by a Booth Newspapers Washington reporter, not the newhouse washington bureau as such. Jaffe just hasn’t been paying attention.

Come on Harry. The closing of the NNS bureau has virtually no impact on coverage of Washington by local papers. The bureau did NOT cover Washington for any Newhouse paper. They covered a broad range of topics such as race, charity, technology. They wrote stories that Newhouse papers rarely ran. There are 11 reporters working for the local Newhouse papers who happened to share the office space. Nine of those 11 are still assigned to Washington and will find their own work space(s). Sloppy, bad reporting. Welcome to Web 2.0.

Jaffe has a good point. The dearth of Washington-based reporting is troubling.

Too bad it’s lost in this rambling monologue.
