I think over-priced and over-rated are two different concepts that need to be parsed out here. While I agree that many may question whether a $100 - $200 dinner at Vidalia or Blue Duck is worth the price, I don’t think these restaurants are over-rated in the quality of their food. Personally, the single most overrated meal I’ve eaten was at Central. The given the praise the restaurant has received I didn’t expect my meal to taste like a facsimile of real Michel Richard entree.

Citronelle:
Went there recently. I’ve been there 3x. Decor: BORING; Food: Decent but NOT worth the price. Nothing was very special. Cost: $300 +

Restaurant Eve:
Decor: Elegant but nothing special; Food: SALTY (EVERYTHING); Cost: $200+

@ JayDees:

"Also I don’t need a 22 year old waitress trying to tell me about pancetta like I have never heard of it."

Huh, isn’t telling you about the food served at the restaurant part of her job?

Posted by: Alexandra, Dec 11, 2008 02:17:25 PM

I am just surprised to see the bad language and terrible complaints here. Are moderators not checking anything ?

Posted by: Somebody, Dec 11, 2008 10:52:18 AM

Charlie Palmer. The service was horrible, and the food was not that good. Definitely not worth the money!

Posted by: Jaime, Dec 11, 2008 08:00:45 AM

Cafe Milano continues to go down hill quickly! The wait staff clearly was educated by the DC public school system and the food has become a complete insult to anyone with taste buds. This restaurant appears to only still exist because the overweight, undereducated and completely classless Washington "socialites" have very few other dining options that would welcome them. There is no difference between their pasta dishes and the ones you can make yourself from a box of store-brand dry pasta and a jar of Ragu!

Posted by: Wendy, Dec 11, 2008 07:12:20 AM

Bens Chili Bowl is great!
Come on Joe!

Posted by: Peter, Dec 10, 2008 03:15:40 PM

Sequoia--great location, horrible food.

Sam & Harry’s was also a considerable disapointment.

Posted by: JB, Dec 10, 2008 01:41:38 PM

I vote for 1789! So mediocre.

Posted by: D.K., Dec 10, 2008 12:53:30 PM

I had the worst experience at the Willard Room. The service was poor, the food came after an hour, all cold without any apologies.

Posted by: gwk, Dec 10, 2008 12:44:51 PM

Cafe Milano and West End Bistro, easy.

Posted by: EJ, Dec 10, 2008 12:40:53 PM

I concur with the poster above who wrote "Formerly Galileo, now probably Cafe Milano." Cafe Milano is soooo hit or miss with their food. I have eaten there three times in the past two months and two of the times the food was sub par. The wait staff is professional, but the cooks are letting the restaurant seriously slide.

Inn at Little Washington followed closely by Black Salt.

Posted by: Scarlett, Dec 10, 2008 11:53:58 AM

Vidalia and Brasserie Beck

Posted by: Nevin Martell, Dec 10, 2008 11:45:08 AM

Leopold’s Kafe and Konditorei by a long shot! After a schnitzel tasting of rancid fat and being subjected to the most atrocious service in town, I’ll people-watch elsewhere in Georgetown from now on.

Posted by: Mia, Dec 10, 2008 08:17:36 AM

Blue Duck Tavern. People love their fries? Are you kidding me? They’re like warmed raw potatoes.

Posted by: Amanda, Dec 10, 2008 07:46:08 AM

Also...it would be more helpful if people posted places that are consistently disappointing. One experience does not qualify a restaurant for overrated status, IMO. That’s why reviewers go back more than once, to factor in an off night.

Posted by: OG, Dec 10, 2008 07:39:13 AM

I’m not sure how you can have a good experience at Citronelle. It’s not the food, which is incredible. It’s that the place looks like a Holiday Inn banquet room in Manitowoc, WI circa 1985.

Posted by: OG, Dec 10, 2008 07:36:48 AM

Cafe Milano and Hudson. Hudson being one of the worst in the city for overpriced, yet barely edible food. Milano cares more about entertaining socialites than serving authentic and tasty Italian food.

Posted by: Josh B, Dec 10, 2008 07:13:14 AM

Komi by far. I spent over $400 for a leg of a young goat. Ridiculous.

Posted by: Craig, Dec 10, 2008 07:04:22 AM

I’d go with almost any restaurant in DC as a safe pick... I’ve consistently found DC restaurants overpriced for the quality of the food and service, and the "top" restaurants to be just OK by non-DC standards. I’ve yet to be wow-ed.

Baltimore (easily) has better restaurants, with more reasonable prices.

Posted by: PhillyFude, Dec 10, 2008 05:51:21 AM

Cityzen - Pedestrian meals and lackluster wine list
Charlie Palmer’s Steak - Cold Steak and unknowledgeable Sommelier
Inn at Little Washington - Bad service, ridiculous wine prices (wine list purchased from Yannick Cam years ago) and stupid Amuse Bouche policy

Posted by: RollieB, Dec 10, 2008 02:39:07 AM

adour come on food that is so expensive it gives fashion desiners a good name for charging 200 bucks for jeans. if you charge those prices the guy with his name on the door should fucking be there!!!!!!!!!

Another interloper that was givin a free pass to DC!!!!

Posted by: jess, Dec 09, 2008 09:23:15 PM

I think Hook is very overrated.

Posted by: Rick, Dec 09, 2008 03:36:42 PM

The Palm

Posted by: don, Dec 09, 2008 03:06:28 PM

It HAS to be Lauriol Plaza.

Posted by: DK, Dec 09, 2008 02:42:09 PM

I’m casting my vote for Blue Duck Tavern. A steak my husband ordered there was underwhelming. Luckily, we were there with a gift certificate, but still. C’mon.

Posted by: Lenny, Dec 09, 2008 02:40:04 PM

cityzen
komi
inn of little washington
citronelle
the cafe of palena

come on people its all random!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: brooke, Dec 09, 2008 02:35:57 PM

The winner is Cafe Milano!!

Posted by: louis, Dec 09, 2008 02:34:03 PM

Brasserie Beck is super over-rated... the beer selection is amazing but the food is crap.

Posted by: LA, Dec 09, 2008 02:30:16 PM

iRicci in Dupont. Terrible service, and bland, overcooked food.

Posted by: Bethany, Dec 09, 2008 01:47:10 PM

Definitely Vidalia.

Posted by: peter, Dec 09, 2008 12:49:02 PM

DC Coast, for me, was the most overrated experience. After not being able to get a reservation during Restaurant Week as well as a few other times, thought it was going to be great... but my fish just wasn’t that good.

I thought Vidalia’s food was excellent. The only thing overrated about it to me was the "Southern hospitality" - because the service just wasn’t that friendly (though not bad). It is one of the best meals I’ve had in the city.

Posted by: MD, Dec 09, 2008 12:42:01 PM

Citronelle bar far

Posted by: Bridget, Dec 09, 2008 12:28:54 PM

Rock Creek Mazza is terrible.

Posted by: Aaron, Dec 09, 2008 12:19:56 PM

Kinkeads

Posted by: Sarah, Dec 09, 2008 12:17:43 PM

Kinkead’s - Good seafood and great service. Bartender is a mean old guy and "some" of the customers on my last two visits were terribly "stuck up"! I was there last Saturday night with some friends and probably won’t return.

Posted by: Nat, Dec 09, 2008 12:15:05 PM

For my money, I would have to say Indebleu is the most overrated. Although, I don’t think it was ever that highly rated to begin with. Expensive/unimaginative food and the cocktail I order was way overblown. The tantric lounge is cool, but other than that overrated. As for Vidalia, I am surprised to see so many bad reviews. I’ve only been there once, but I enjoyed the meal. I did order the chef’s tasting menu, so that may have had something to do with it.

Posted by: Mike, Dec 09, 2008 12:06:34 PM

Pretty much any place with a line out the door.

Posted by: Aaron, Dec 09, 2008 12:05:18 PM

This is the most pointless bull shit that you all have ever came up with. It is so random that one would like one restaurant and another may love or hate another. Why not just embrace the fact that individuals will always have opinions on preferences on food because its so personal.

I dont like Komi its not worth the price of admission to sit there for 4 hours. Vidalia is a fantastic restaurant for the value where else in this city is a James Beard winning chef’s tasting menu is 79.00.

Why lets try asking HOW CAN WE HELP OUR LOCAL RESTAURANTS AND ECONOMY.

Posted by: Bill, Dec 09, 2008 12:01:02 PM

Put me down for Eve being the most overrated. Good food without good service does not make for an outstanding restaurant...especially at those prices.

Posted by: Anne, Dec 09, 2008 11:54:35 AM

It’s a three-way tie: Vidalia, Vidalia, and Vidalia.

Posted by: slurpeeman, Dec 09, 2008 11:45:19 AM

Most overrated? That’s as pointless as asking what’s the best restaurant. Besides, most of these places people go to with ridiculous expectations about how mindblowingly fantastic the food is. So they go to a seafood place and order steak or a steak place and order vegetarian and when the chef doesn’t personally fellate you, of course you’re going to be disappointed. So really you should ask: who’s the most overrated customer.

Just look in the mirror.

Posted by: monkeyrotica, Dec 09, 2008 11:43:33 AM

JT: Ditto on Blue Duck Tavern. WAY over-rated!

Posted by: ditto, Dec 09, 2008 11:43:06 AM

Kinkeads. We sat in a back room that felt as if you were in a banquet hall (front rooms are much nicer) Food was pretty good, but definitely too much $$ for what you got.

Posted by: MP, Dec 09, 2008 11:42:23 AM

Vidalia. I had two very mediocre meals there.

Posted by: liz, Dec 09, 2008 11:41:07 AM

West End Bistro!! so-so food at really high prices!

Posted by: Ingrid, Dec 09, 2008 11:38:56 AM

TenPenh--I’ve never had anything good there.
Ceiba--I mean, it’s OK, but nothing special. Yeah, yeah, Feijoada, hoopty-do; you can get just as good or better at just about any Salvadoran joint.

Posted by: mrmoonpie, Dec 09, 2008 11:37:22 AM

I had not one, but two, really mediocre meals at Vidalia. I have vowed to not go back, after giving it the benefit of the doubt the first time around.

Posted by: liz, Dec 09, 2008 11:33:01 AM

Gazuza is a restaurant? I didn’t know douchebags were edible.

Most overrated: Formerly Galileo, now probably Cafe Milano.

Posted by: Michael, Dec 09, 2008 11:32:17 AM

west end bistro. go for wine and apps at the bar. don’t bother with full dinner/entrees.

Posted by: Will, Dec 09, 2008 11:31:55 AM

Cork. Crap food, cramped space, deafening noise, just awful.

And, ditto on Eve. Oooo, also Hook. That place was gross and overrated from the get-go.

Posted by: Elise Anderson, Dec 09, 2008 11:30:51 AM

I hate to say it but, Blue Duck Tavern. I’m not impressed with anything beyond the cocktails and charcuterie. It’s a shame because that patio is so beautiful.

Posted by: JT, Dec 09, 2008 11:28:48 AM

I’d say Vidalia was a disappointment for me. I went and just had a few appetizers, and the bill was way too high for what I got. I’m not sure I’d recommend it even though it gets so much press.

Posted by: Vienna, Dec 09, 2008 11:27:58 AM

Ooh, feisty question! I’d have to say Tabard Inn. We went for my boyfriend’s graduation from Georgetown and while the company was great, the food wasn’t stellar. I mean it wasn’t BAD, but there are way better places (personal fave: Brasserie Beck) for a nice night out.

Posted by: Marissa, Dec 09, 2008 11:26:52 AM

Easy: Ben’s Chili Bowl.

Posted by: Joe Grossberg, Dec 09, 2008 11:21:45 AM

Gazuza... Hands down.

Posted by: Aaron Brazell, Dec 09, 2008 11:18:15 AM

I think that Restaurant Eve is by far the most overrated restaurant now that Donna has closed Galileo. The wine list at Eve is a slap in the face to its customers as very few of the wines are recognizable by name. Just because wine is grown in South America or Korea does not mean it is good or worth a $100 guess. Also I don’t need a 22 year old waitress trying to tell me about pancetta like I have never heard of it. One thing foodies don’t like is being underestimated. All in all, Eve should step back and realize it is located in Old Town Alexandria not TriBeCa.
