Burger Brackets: Westend Bistro vs. Central

Who makes the best burger in Washington? We're holding a March Madness-style, bracketed face-off to find out. Check back every day at 10 AM and 2 PM for continuing burger vs. burger competitions. And don't forget to vote for your favorites!

Published Tuesday, March 03, 2009

Our first Burger Bracket. Our second bracket will debut next week.

UPDATE: Per several of your suggestions, we've modified the bracket to reflect a more traditional seeding of the burger places. What can we say? Our forte is burgers, not sports. Sorry for the inconvenience, and we hope this new bracket makes for an all-around better Burger Bracket experience for everybody. Happy voting! Check back tomorrow at 10 AM for the next face-off.

Welcome to our very first Burger Brackets face-off! Let's get the boring stuff out of the way first: the rules.

For the next couple of weeks, we'll be posting two burger vs. burger voting competitions a day—one at 10 AM and another at 2. Polls will stay open for 24 hours for each competition.  Make sure to check back every weekday for two new burger face-offs to vote on.

The burger spot with the most reader votes at the end of the 24-hour voting period will move on to the next round.

Once we've moved through the first round on the red bracket, we'll introduce a second bracket for you to vote on. Then we'll move onto the second round.

This morning, the burger spots that have the honor of kicking off the Burger Brackets are (drumroll)...

Westend Bistro: Celebrity chef Eric Ripert reveals that inspirations behind his "perfect burger" include McDonald's and Burger King. Even if you sniff at the $16 burger's lowbrow origins, you can't deny its juiciness, attention to proportion (just the right amount of lettuce and tomato), and full-on flavor.

Central: We're fans of Michel Richard's famed lobster burger, but don't ignore the beef patty at his French/American bistro: the $16 sandwich is less exotic, but it’s the burger of your fantasies, big and plump and dripping with juice.

Who do you think makes the best burger: Westend Bistro or Central? Vote below, and check back at 2 PM today for our next burger face-off. Polls for Westend Bistro vs. Central will stay open until 10 AM Wednesday morning.

Also: Make sure to vote in our latest face-off, BLT Steak vs. Charlie Palmer Steak

@Milton—that is because this contest has closed. But you can still vote on current Burger Brackets here: http://www.washingtonian.com/blogs/bestbites/burger%20brackets/index.html

How do you enter a vote in the Burger contest? I don’t see a place to do so.

THE CENTRAL, What else

I always take out of town guests and large groups to Central and it always impresses!! The burger is a big hit!!

The Central Burger has the right blend of flavor, seasoning, textures, toasted bun, mouth-watering deliciousness that you could ever hope for in a burger. I’m drooling just thinking about it -- and the fries are to die for. If you haven’t had one yet, you are truly missing out!

I really think you guys are missing a far superior burger from that of ’Big Buns’ in Ballston. These burgers are amazing and definitely deserve to be ranked among the likes of Five Guys, Rays, and Good Stuff.

Posted by: ArlingtonFoodie, Mar 04, 2009 08:07:44 AM

Goodstuff eatery...who posted that comment amongst these far superior burgers!?

Went to goodstuff last week for lunch, its a five guys (just a bigger patty) in that is it dry and well done.

Central will make it far!

Even the Aussie big burger from Sydney can’t match the Central lobster burger

CENTRAL makes the finest burger in town, anytime all the time. Their french fries are the best too!

One evening, not long ago, I was blessed by the offering of a hamburger from Central. Once it’s beefy juiciness made love to my mouth, I was hooked. Best burger by far it the city. And handsome bartenders.

Central’s burger is the greatest!

@Hamburgler and @Ben we have to admit that our knowledge of basketball brackets and such was sketchy at first, but we’ve done some more in-depth research on how to do it and will be updating the brackets to make them a bit more well-thought-out. Thanks for the input!

Were these burgers ranked a la the real NCAA brackets? It sure doesn’t look like it... more thought should have went into this even if it is just for fun.

Oh and where is Big Buns?

Westend is the best-end

Hands down BLT Steak. Amazing Burger, fantastic fries, great presentation!

Good Stuff Eatery has a great burger!!!! It’s the perfect size!

You are missing Urban Burger in Rockville!

Posted by: Gayle, Mar 03, 2009 10:49:35 AM

I understand the effort to group the tournament by restaurant genre, but the bracket could have benefited from some seeds, so we wouldn’t have the excellent Palena or Rays Hell burger getting knocked out the first round while the a member of the "Who cares?" foursome down at the bottom gets a bye all the way to the semis.

Vidalia’s Onion Burger Number 1 in DC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Russ, Mar 03, 2009 10:13:17 AM

Vote Westend! The burger there is one of the best things i’ve ever tasted. Ever.

Posted by: Emily, Mar 03, 2009 08:50:09 AM

This is absolutely priceless!
