Daily dispatches on the Washington, DC area's food, restaurant and dining scene.

Burger Brackets: EatBar vs. Whitlows

Welcome to Burger Brackets, where we ask you to vote to discover the best burger in Washington. Today's face-off is...

Who makes the best burger in Washington? We're holding a March Madness-style, bracketed face-off to find out. Check back every day at 10 AM and 2 PM for continuing burger vs. burger competitions. And don't forget to vote for your favorites!

A commenter on yesterday's burger face-off between Matchbox and Union Street Public House quipped, "If a pizza place wins a burger contest, baby Jesus cries." Well, we don't know if they'll win, but Matchbox slid on easily to the second round. See ya, Union Street!

Today's burger challenge? Check below.

Whitlows: These $7.50 half-pound patties are grilled to order and come with toppings like jalapenos and guacamole. On Mondays, you can down them for half-price.

EatBar: It's better known for its housemade hotdog, but the $10 burger at this Lyon Park gastropub is popular too. It's elevated by herbs and a good dose of butter, then topped with sweet pickles. There's even homemade ketchup to go with it.

Who makes the better burger? Vote in the poll below, then leave your thoughts in the comments. Then go and vote in the Sonoma vs. Chadwicks burger face-off—that's open until 2 PM today.

@Bartholomew Simpson, Five Guys was on the earlier bracket, and beat out Fuddruckers. (Look here: http://www.washingtonian.com/blogarticles/restaurants/bestbites/11599.html). Come back to vote them through to the next round next week.

Eatbar is the best burger in DC, besides 5 guys why aren’t they nominated? Are they not a staple of the Metro D.C Burger Industry? Are they not a great example of how a dc area business can thrive financially. They started with one and now Im finding them in Carson, California....?

butter burgers are just better burgers. whatever else happens beyond that is fine, but it’s almost unfair to match any plain patty of beef (and i kinda like whitlows’ burger) against eatbar’s meat. nathan’s just got a better and more thoughtfully crafted product from start to finish. honda and mazerati are both cars, but beyond that...

At EatBar the burger is housemade, and knowing their practices, with quality ingredients sourced locally if possible. Hard to find a place that puts that kind of effort in even simple dishes such as a good burger! Vote EatBar!

I’m sure EatBar (which I like) prides itself on having a classy burger... but boy, does a Whitlow’s burger and fries really hit the spot. Whitlow’s really deserves to make it to the next round. Especially when you get the Chili Cheese Burger. Or the Smokehouse burger.
