Burger Brackets: Five Guys vs. Billy Martin's Tavern
Today, we move on to the second round of the Burger Brackets. Who will advance? Who will fall off the charts, never to be heard from again? Make sure to vote in today's face-off!
Happy Friday morning, burger lovers, and welcome to the second round of the Burger Brackets! While there is still one outstanding Burger Brackets going on in the green bracket (Morton's vs. Smith & Wollensky, which is open for voting until 2 PM today), we're also starting voting for those who made it through to the second round. There are some big names in here—Five Guys, Ray's Hell Burger, and more—so make sure to vote early and spread the word to make sure your favorite gets through to the second round.
Also, on the advice of some commenters and more, uh, sports-knowledgeable folks than us, we've re-seeded the second rounds to reflect vote totals.
We'll continue doing the two-a-day face-offs for the next four weekdays, and then we'll move to a one-a-day face-off when we advance to the third round.
But enough explaining! This is about the deliciousness of burgers, not how much we can write about the rules. Let's head to today's face-off—and it's a doozy.
(PS: Later today, we'll be merging the two brackets, so you'll be able to see all participating burger spots. For now you can see the green bracket here.)
This Friday's 10 AM match up is Five Guys vs. Billy Martin's Tavern. When Five Guys faced up against Fuddruckers, the chain with a local heart blew away the competition—and garnered the most votes we've had in a face-off yet. But when Billy Martin's went up against Nathan's, the Georgetown tavern only managed to eke out a win, 51% to 49%. We have a feeling we know how this face-off might go, but who knows? We could be surprised. So vote below, and spread the word to make sure your choice advances to the next round!
Vote in the Five Guys vs. Billy Martin's Tavern Burger Bracket:
Harry’s Tap Room? Burgers aren’t even mentioned in the Washingtonian review of that Clarendon restaurant! Don’t you mean Harry’s on 11th Street, NW in Washington, DC, where salad or chips come free with the half pound burger? The place which competes very well and at a less expensive price with ESPN Zone?

Wow! Stoney’s didn’t make the brackets?
Also have to follow up U Street’s comments about 5G’s getting a LOT more exposure than Billy Martin’s!

Five Guys beat Hell Burger any day. And that is even more true when you consider price. Hell Burger is vastly overpriced for the quality of beef which has dropped recently. Landrum should be embarassed charging his prices for the beef he sells. Its no better than stuff down the street.

"Who will fall off the charts, never to be heard from again?" NEVER TO BE HEARD FROM AGAIN? Did someone actually write that? Many of these restaurants have been around a long time and the newer places are quality establishments. That’s just a silly thing to say. If someone had any sense they would remove that comment from the intro.

I’m pretty glad that Five Guys was able to prevail in the last round over the weird Fuddrucker’s shills/bots who seem to love typing their fave burger chain’s name in all-caps and making bizarrely exaggerated statements about how good it is ("best burgers IN THE COUNTRY!") My favorite had to be the one who proclaimed that Fudd’s uses "100 American, corn-fed beef" which is so broad that it’s almost meaningless.
Anyway, 5 guys is good but, long live the hell burger!

five guys is an institution and it feeds many a drank person. there’s no way it’s going down until the head to head with Ray’s.
All hail the Hell burger.

So I have to protest this matchup. I understand that in March Madness you have some uneven/poorly paired matchups at the beginning of the tournament and this is no different. Martin’s has absolutely one of the best burgers in town [and yes, full disclosure I did used to work there]. The problem is that, if you look at the percentage of people in the greater Metro aread who have tasted Five Guys instead of Martin’s of COURSE 5G is gonna come out on top. Not really your problem, I guess, but this is just far to unfair to really warrant a comparison... IMHO
