Burger Brackets: Chadwick's vs. EatBar

We're on to the final four in the Burger Brackets. Who'll make it through to the finals? Who will be cast aside? Vote now for your choice.

Published Thursday, March 26, 2009

Well, in a neck-and-neck vote that was too close to call until right before we closed the poll, both Elevation Burger and BLT Steak proved themselves to have a rabid fanbase. And so we have our first-ever entrant into the Burger Brackets final...drumroll...BLT Steak!

The voting on the finals will open tomorrow, Friday, March 27 at 2 PM, and will stay open for a whole week this time. So vote early (but not often: we'll be monitoring the polls to make sure there are no shenangians going on in the voting. If we see what appears to be irregularities, we reserve the right to disqualify an entrant).

For now, let's get on to the last match-up before we hit the finals. Check below for the face-off!

Just a reminder: you can keep tabs on all the Burger Brackets and browse through past ones here.

Chadwick's: The $9 burger at the Georgetown branch of this friendly neighborhood pub is nearly a half-pound of charbroiled Angus topped with lettuce, tomato, and a pickle. On Mondays you'll find it for half-price.

EatBar: It's better known for its housemade hotdog, but the $10 burger at this Lyon Park gastropub is popular too. It's elevated by herbs and a good dose of butter, then topped with sweet pickles. There's even homemade ketchup to go with it.

Who makes the better burger? Vote in the poll below, spread the word to your friends, and leave your thoughts in the comments—and make sure to check back tomorrow to see who made it to the Burger Brackets final!

Keep tabs on all the Burger Brackets here.

Chadwick’s wins by a nose.

WAY 2 GO EATBAR!!! On to the Final Round!! Let’s show those NYC punks who’s burger is the best.

To Business: Not yours and wowed -
why do you insinuate that Chadwicks had anything to do with Dan Grey’s moronic comments?
Someone might think EatBar had something to do with your moronic comments. But I don’t think they did. Stay positive. Make it a better world.

I want to get one very important detail before going in to this. Chadwick’s is an institution. It’s been feeding the hearts and minds and livers of DC and NOVA residents since 1967. EatBar has only been around in its current form since January of 2007. Of course, that being said....

This is not based on history. It’s based on the burger. EatBar and Chef Nathan have crafted everything that’s in their burger in-house, from the ketchup and mustard, to the pickles. The beef is fresh ground in-house and seasoned and cooked perfectly. And it’s HUGE!!! A lot of people complain that it’s too expensive, but for what you’re getting, it seems to me like it’s a bargain. Chadwick’s is great, and it has it’s own atmosphere, but the burgers are pretty middle of the road. They’re good, but they’re not special or possess something that makes them stand out.

That said, I have to say EatBar wins this, hands down.

Sorry Chadwick’s...I love ya, but I’ve got to stick to my guns here.

Posted by: Inglorious Bastard, Mar 27, 2009 08:40:59 AM

I prefer Eatbar because they use only the finest New York banker meat in their burgers... you can really taste soullessness... very stimulating.

Posted by: Toothy Hunger, Mar 27, 2009 08:05:26 AM

I don’t know who would say that Eat Bar people are snobs...unless your meaning is "Food Snobs". If you took the time to not only try the burger, but to actually go to Eat Bar once you would probably feel differently than you do.

Dan Grey - nice Ad. Sort-of catchy. Did Chadwick’s give you a free lunch?

Posted by: Business: Not yours, Mar 27, 2009 07:58:53 AM

Chadwick’s, Chadwick’s, Chadwick’s burger! They have OUTSTANDING BBQ Ribs too and if there was a ribs contest they’d win that hands down as well!!! Vote for the best burger and that’s Chadwick’s!!! Outstanding personnel and service to boot!

Posted by: Bro, Mar 27, 2009 07:57:02 AM

Chadwick’s nor Eat Bar are as good as mine but if I had to choose one of them I’ll go with Chadwick’s! Eat Bar has too much fat/grease fo me!!!

Posted by: THE Burger King, Mar 27, 2009 07:50:31 AM

To reiterate what someone else said, has anyone voting/commenting in favor of Chadwick’s here actually eaten both burgers?

Chadwick’s really is nothing special. I used to eat their burger now and then, but only because it was a block from my office.

Posted by: Dayv, Mar 27, 2009 07:26:15 AM

Eat Bar peoples are snobs. I like my burgers like I like my women--fat, juicy, and unpretentious.

Posted by: Jeff Gefkin, Mar 27, 2009 07:22:29 AM

I stopped going to Old Town Chadwick’s when I realized their on-line advertisement for Sunday’s was a scam. 3 differnet times I went there on a Sunday for their advertised 16 oz $2.50 Miller Lites and was told each time that no one knew anything about it. Yet it still is advertised. Waiters have said they have asked and there is no information on it. You advertise it, you serve it! And at least have someone in the restaurant who can speak to why or why not it is advertised and not honored vice not knowing ANYTHING about it ! Best anything....don’t think so !

HERBS AND BUTTER? GIVE ME A BREAK. I’LL TAKE A CHADWICKS BACON CHEESE BURGER ANY DAY OF THE WEEK! WHAT THE HELL IS A GASTRO PUB, ANYWAY?

Posted by: Baseball , Mar 27, 2009 03:39:56 AM

If Chadwicks wins this...I really dont know why it would, it will be a strong demonstration that there is seriously something wrong with peoples perception of good food! Chadwicks IS WAY out of their league. How they made it here confuses me??!! Really, all you Chadwicks fans, have you REALLY had both burgers? If so, and you are still a fan,...we would need to locate you as soon as possible and send you back to the crazy house you escaped from!

Posted by: JJ, Mar 27, 2009 12:27:06 AM

If “A Thing of Beauty Is a Joy Forever”, then EatBar’s Burger will be around FOREVER! Its a veritable gastronomic symphony! Opening with a crescendo of the best beef, followed by a tantalizing coda of spices, herbs and creamery butter, it soars to a sweet harmonic piquancy via perfectly presented pickles, then –all too soon— cascades to a tasty and memorable finish as all of EatBar’s Burger-Meistering expertise harmonizes in each lucky mouth, complimented by grace notes of homemade ketchup from their Conductore/Chef’s own, well-rehearsed hands. Voila!! I give you, EatBar’s Soon-To-Be-World-Famous: “BURGER FORTE"! Bravo! Bravissimo!!

Posted by: Burger-Maven, Mar 26, 2009 09:09:14 PM

did dan grey just insult everyone that reads this and further insinuate that his opinion is the only valid one? wow. and there i go thinkin’ i was a prick. just goes to show ya that when you think you’ve hit the pinnacle of your craft someone new allways attains a higher level for you to aspire to reach. lofty heights indeed dan. way high.

oh, yeah. eatbar’s burger really is a lot better than chadwicks. you’re wrong dan. that kind of basic judgement failure calls into question the validity of anything you write in the future. just sayin’. food critics are supposed to possess taste buds. how much did you sell yours for? basic ad rate? curious.

Posted by: wowed, Mar 26, 2009 07:48:16 PM

Americans know who am I. And I agree with other competitive eater Black Widow and Joey Chestnut that Chadwick has best hamburger in DC. I want eat their hamburger in contest their. Go Chadwick hamburger.

Posted by: Takeru Kobayashi, Mar 26, 2009 06:55:40 PM

I imagine that, sadly, most voters haven’t tried both. I’ve had both. EatBar offers, by far, the best flavor. Meat, seasoning, preparation, and toppings. Chadwick’s is far outclassed.

Posted by: elPedro, Mar 26, 2009 06:52:33 PM

Chadwick’s burgers are a boring affair that on could easily make at home. EatBar’s burgers......now they show the love and imagination of a chef who wants to wow her/his customers with something creatively delicious and not something that most people make at home. We have enough boring chains around with bland food. Me, I like variety!!!! GO EATBAR!!!

Chadwicks burgers make my engine run

Posted by: Dick Trickle, Mar 26, 2009 06:40:36 PM

I just had a chadwicks burger, it was so good I then had a bacon cheeseburger with sauteed mushrooms on top for good measure!

The Georgetowner knows that Chadwick’s has the best Burgers. Thanks to The Washingtonian magazine for conducting the contest, but really -what do their Readers know about burgers?

Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer

When I wrote that I was talking about Chadwicks - the true Cheeseburger in Paradise.

eatbar’s burger is so good, i have a hard time maintaining a polite conversation when i have one. burger zen. ohhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Posted by: bob, Mar 26, 2009 05:18:07 PM

Burgers and football! That’s what Chadwicks does!

Posted by: Vince Vaughn, Mar 26, 2009 05:14:38 PM

eatbar makes the best damn burger ever. period.

oh, yeah. in regards to the earlier pro-chadwicks comment by mr west, "we have hamburgers, and they are special." a quote from MANY years ago is all you’ve got? to be fair, it’s been a while since anyone did have something starring to say about the burger there. further, if by that quote you mean short-bus kinda special then, yeah. they’re very special. genuinely gifted even.

chadwicks burgers are not great. they’re ok, but...we’re voting for best, right? that’s eatbar.

Posted by: eat burger...good, Mar 26, 2009 04:31:51 PM

Chadwick’s has had awesome burgers forever!!

Posted by: Pat Baker, Mar 26, 2009 03:56:25 PM

these comments in chadwicks favor are actually kinda comical.

"what flavor, style and presentation"?

it’s a burger and fries slopped on a diner plate. no offense, but it’s a plain, simple burger courtesy of lankford sysco and their vast array of products for the foodservice industry. chadwicks burger is absolutely identical to so many others in countless sports/frat bars. it’s not bad per se, but there’s nothing remarkable about it and to go overboard on the compliments is putting lipstick on a pig.

eatbat by a huge margin in this one. chadwicks is not in the same league.

Posted by: beer hound, Mar 26, 2009 03:55:48 PM

I keep coming to this blog hoping that you will post some interesting foodie tidbits but so far nothing interesting. And this contest is a friggin joke. Ray’s all the way. Chardicks? BLT? Puhleeze.

Washingtonian you are almost a lost cause.

Posted by: lurker, Mar 26, 2009 03:35:34 PM

Just had the burger at eatbar last week for the first time. It’s the best I’ve had since I moved here 2 years ago. GO EATBAR!

Posted by: Phil, Mar 26, 2009 03:23:23 PM

i’ve eaten a LOT of burgers over the years and, all things considered, eatbar has one of the best i’ve ever tasted. butter burgers are better burgers. no contest.

Posted by: bar fly, Mar 26, 2009 03:13:28 PM

mmmmmmmm... i love me a Chadwicks burger!!! I could go for one right now!!

Posted by: BurgerLover, Mar 26, 2009 02:58:23 PM

Ray’s got knocked out yo

Posted by: dude, Mar 26, 2009 02:22:42 PM

nasty? eh...sounds spot on.

listen, chadwicks has an adequate, consistent burger, but it’s nothing spectacular. let’s just be honest. it’s good. not great. definitely not the best.

eatbar has something special. it’s a mouth full of color. there’s simply more craft and care put into them and you can taste it. the chef there has put a lot of thought into his food and it shows. there’s love in that there eatbar burger!

Posted by: burger guy, Mar 26, 2009 02:19:54 PM

Why wasn’t Ray’s Hell Burger in this competition???

Posted by: BurgerGirl, Mar 26, 2009 02:07:50 PM

getting nasty ! someone getting worried ?Chadwicks is a real burger

Posted by: mike burger, Mar 26, 2009 02:05:23 PM

eatbar’s burger flattly outclasses chadwick’s. not to knock chaddy’s, but eatbar works in butter and seasonings to meat ground by chef nathan himself in house. there’s not a comparison. eatbar is the best in the area by a loooooooong shot.

though if you prefer meat ground last week, packed in a plastic tube, frozen, thawed, sliced into a disc and then cooked to what may or may not be the right temperature and then served with out of season tomatoes that taste like water, then, by all means, chadwicks has the burger for you.

Posted by: eatbar fanatic, Mar 26, 2009 01:51:38 PM

Love me some Chadwicks!!!!!

Posted by: k, Mar 26, 2009 01:36:22 PM

Mmmmm... I’m drooling just THINKING of Chadwicks burgers. Might have to go get one for dinner!

Posted by: brfk, Mar 26, 2009 01:34:59 PM

Still dream about Chadwick’s French Onion Soup

Posted by: newton Hawthorne, Mar 26, 2009 01:34:55 PM

EATBAR. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm more eat less talk.

Posted by: j, Mar 26, 2009 01:26:17 PM

Eat Bar all the way! :)

Posted by: Veronica, Mar 26, 2009 01:22:43 PM

Are you kidding me? This is a real contest? EatBar all the way. I’m still trying to figure out how Chadwicks beat Spider Kelley’s and Harry’s Tap Room.

This is like comparing a Beethoven symphony to a Jonas Brothers song. I’d be surprised if Chadwick’s beat the Silver Diner. EatBar is one of the best burger joints this side of the Mississippi.

Ah, Chad’s, what flavor, style and presentation! I vote Chad-which’s why I posted this here post.

Posted by: Baton Rouge, Mar 26, 2009 01:16:49 PM

Chadwick’s has the best burgers hands down

(and sweet potato fries to go along with)

Posted by: krmd, Mar 26, 2009 01:12:11 PM

Chadwick’s Rocks!!! Can’t touch the Chadwick’s Burger.

Posted by: Andrew Tkach, Mar 26, 2009 01:04:35 PM

Bob, the Chadwick’s burger is $9, right? Eat Bar is $10. I don’t see what the big deal is???? I’ll pay the extra buck!

Posted by: Clarendon J, Mar 26, 2009 12:45:55 PM

EatBar wins hands down. There’s nothing special about the Chadwick’s burger. Hate to say it, but it’s true... Chadwick’s does make a good burger, but EatBar makes a phenomenal burger with 10x the flavor, and much better texture.

Posted by: burgerfiend, Mar 26, 2009 12:43:38 PM

"Feasts are made for laughter; wine gladdens life, and money meets every need." (Eccles. 10:19) At Chadwick’s the hamburgers are a feast, the wine is smooth, and less money is needed than at EatBar.

Posted by: Bob, Mar 26, 2009 12:23:19 PM

Chadwicks as excellent burgers and there are also other fine delicious items on their menu.

Posted by: Yvette Graves, Mar 26, 2009 12:14:42 PM

I still love the Phyllis Richman quote about the Chadwicks burger, which she attributed to an unnamed server who she asked if there was a burger special:

"We have hamburgers, and they are special."

Posted by: Mr. West, Mar 26, 2009 11:32:31 AM

Go Chadwicks! Best burgers in DC since 1967 :-)
