Andy Shallal has a new literary-themed restaurant just next door to Busboys and Poets, his popular U Street hangout. Eatonville (2121 14th St., NW; 202-332-9672) is inspired by author Zora Neale Hurston and named after her Florida hometown. We asked diners exiting the restaurant to weigh in on the Southern comfort food and colorful murals.

The Gumbo is great (and priced at a real value) but I’d recommend that the sausage be cut in the same size as the shrimp. Don’t understand why they minced the pieces SO SMALL!
The cider-glazed Mahi Mahi is horrible (taste like fish with ketch-up on it). The sausage is good but the dish overall is a bore and off balanced in spices and the lack of spices.
Where is these two dishes: jambalaya and gravy/biscuits? Don’t they know that gravy/biscuits cures the hangover!
The dessert was lemon pound cake with a rhubarb sauce. Needs more sauce in my opinion since vanilla ice cream is rather bland.
Service is excellent and I was drawn to the rocking chairs, inside.

A restaurant worth going to for the food AND decor. We ordered the hush puppies for appetizer and shared the pecan crusted trout and shrimp etouffie- the flavors were right on. It’s nice to see Southern food presented in a modern way.
I highly recommend this independent restaurant and it fits in the U St. neighborhood
