Chew on This: Where Will You Go For a Sandwich While Breadline Is Closed?

The popular downtown DC lunch spot is closed for repairs after a bad report card from a health-code inspection. Where will you lunch while it's out of commission?

By Kate Nerenberg   Published Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Yesterday was an emotional rollercoaster on Washington’s sandwich front: First, we heard that Breadline, the downtown DC bakery and sandwich shop which always boasted long lines, was closing for good. Then we were elated when the Washington Post’s Going Out Gurus told us it was only temporary—the place had some health-code violations it needed to resolve. But Tim Carman of Washington City Paper procured the food safety inspector’s report card. And Breadline failed. Badly.

Where we can get a delicious sandwich until Breadline returns (fingers crossed)? Let us know in the comments!

Penn Grill is right the street at Pennsylvania & 18th. They’re sandwiches are awesome and the service is incredible.

I can’t believe how many health violations they have!
What really freaks me out is the fact that they have rats in their establishment. That is disgusting.

I always go to The Brown Bag, they have the best sandwiches, the food is fresh and tasty.
They are always my first option when placing an order for my office meetings.

I think people should go the the Brown Bag. The atmosphere is great and everything is very clean. The salads are fresher than chopped and they always have great specials. If your looking for a good sandwich, try the Big Apple Turkey or the Grilled Chicken Panini. Not to mention the staff is extremely helpful and friendly.

Forget sandwiches - go to Spice Express for some Authentic Indian food. Yum. (19th and K area).

Where do these people work that they have TIME to drive to Arlington for a sandwich??? Must be nice in these times...I’m lucky if I get to eat at my desk, if I eat at all!

Dickeys frozen custard on 17th and I makes a great sandwich...fresh carved turkey (good Cubans too). And of course, there’s custard with sprinkles for dessert :)

Teaism is close by and have a small but decent selection of unusual sandwich choices.

I may be too plebeian but Potbelly is good, fresh and inexpensive, even if it is a chain.

A litteri’s in northeast or the Italian store in Arlington. Both rival Taylor in the sandwich arena

The sausage and pepper and grilled egpplant sandwiches at Olazzo are really good. I have only been to the Silver Spring location.

Heidi’s has huge sandwiches and good for a chain around there, Dickey’s is a custard spot but has great press-type sandwiches on cuban bread.

I will always have a soft spot for Jetties (Foxhall) and Wisemillers (Georgetown) sandwiches.

The Ebbitt Express!!!! Great food, great prices -- everything that’s awesome about Old Ebbitt Grill but for when you’re on the run.

I know its not in DC but I like Jackson’s in Arlington... right by all those apartment buildings... it has the best paninis and egg sandwiches.

The Earl in Arlington. Sure, you have to come across the bridge, but the sandwich is delicious and worth a trip to Court House or Clarendon for the effort.

The sandwiches at the new Potenza bakery are pretty great, especially the one with roast beef and blood orange.

Taylor’s on H St. NE. Good Stuff!

Taylor’s in NE on H and 11th has amazing sandwiches. Totally worth a 5 minute drive from downtown.

There’s an amazing somewhat new spot on H St NE called Taylor Gourmet. I happened upon it one day and was amazed that i hadn’t heard of it yet. They have some of the best sandwiches, salads, and pasta I’ve EVER had in DC. Really. You should try it. http://www.taylorgourmet.com/

Devon and Blakely, on F Street, has great sandwiches (and soups...and salads...and desserts...)!

Best Sandwich Place on L street, near the Borders! It’s the best. Really.
