The Pizza Pool: Ella's Wood Fired Pizza vs. Matchbox

We're asking you to vote on Washington's best pizza. Here's today's face-off.

Who makes the best pizza in Washington? You tell us! We're asking you to vote in the first Washingtonian.com Pizza Pool, a brackets-style contest that will narrow 32 pizzas to one winner. For a refresher on how the brackets will work, head here.

To see today's match up, check below.

Ella's Wood Fired Pizza: Nearly 20 wood-fired pies are offered on this Penn Quarter spot's menu, including specialty combos such as the Lombardi (caramelized onions, gorgonzola, and rosemary) and the Polpotini (meatballs, leeks, and parmesan).

Matchbox: Brick-oven pizzas such as the spicy fire-and-smoke—made with chipotle-spiked tomato sauce and smoked gouda—and classic sausage-and-onion keep the lines at these Penn Quarter and Capitol Hill restaurants spilling out of the door.

Did you know? If you click the links of each of the restaurants' names, you can leave your own review of their pizza at that page!

This poll will stay open until noon on Friday.

*To help keep this contest fair, we've elected to use an IP address-based poll. This means that if you are voting from an office or network setting, not everybody will be able to vote. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we hope you'll encourage coworkers to vote from their home computers.

Ella sucks. Matchbox is better.

OMG! I love Ella’s! All I want to do is eat a MELanzane pizza! Yum! So Magical!

Ella’s puts the lie to plaintive whining of NYC/Chicgo/Jersey/etc natives, "you cant get good pizza in DC." Location does not dictate quality.
Great beers too.

Ella’s all the way. fresh ingredients and excellent service. the pizza is so good you just want to take off your shirt and roll around in it.

Plus the bartenders are way hot.

Ella’s, Ella’s, Ella’s! The service staff is superior, the clientele is classier, the atmosphere is both warm and inviting, and the pizza is just down right AWESOME! Ella’s is the quiet but classy oasis where Washingtonian food lovers can mingle.

Plus, I heard a rumor that George Bush and Doland Rumsfeld used to eat lunch at Matchbox. They loved the outdoor fireplace that is constantly burning our precious fossil fuels at all hours of the day.

Think about it................

Ella’s hands down. The freshest of ingredients, the frienliest staff, and a great deal of attention paid to service. Best spaghetti and meatballs in town.

Ella’s all the way!! No comparison. The food is excellent - always fresh, and the staff is always gracious and fun to be around.

Are you kidding? Not only is Ellas Pizza 100 times better but the other food, drinks, service, staff, and atmosphere (need I say more?)completely outdo anything Matchbox has to offer. And who else has PUMPKIN infused vodka? Thats what I thought...

I have been dining out in Washington pizzarias for years now and I must say that Ella’s has them all beat, hands down. The combination of impeccably fresh ingredients, a crispy yet chewy crust, great friendly and fast paced service, and not having to wait an hour for a table makes for a memorable experience which keeps me coming back for more!
Well done Ella’s!

Ella’s is WAY better than Matchbox. Sure, Matchbox has good sliders, but their pizza doesn’t compare.

Matchbox cannot even compare to Ella’s....

Posted by: Layla, Aug 21, 2009 07:25:03 AM

Matchbox. Period.
