The Pizza Pool: Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza vs. Posto

We're onto the third round in our Pizza Pool! Vote today on who you think makes the best pizza in Washington.

UPDATE: This poll is now closed. Pete's New Haven Style Apizza won! You can check out the latest face-offs and vote here

Well, folks, we've made it even further on figuring out the best pizza in Washington! We're on to the Edible Eight of our Washingtonian.com Pizza Pool. The eight remaining pizza spots will be posted over the course of the next few days. We'll still be posting two contests a day, and each will remain open for 24 hours. For a refresher on how the brackets will work, head here.

Pete’s New Haven Apizza: Co-owner Alicia Mehr hails from New Haven, a pizza Mecca. Although the coal-fired slabs at New Haven landmarks such as Sally’s and Pepe’s don’t quite jump to mind here—they’re thinner, smokier, more brittle—one pie in particular does its forebears justice. The New Haven, an homage to Pepe’s most famous pizza, is a sauceless 18-inch crust laden with chopped clams and pecorino cheese. It’s salty, briny, garlicky—and it stays beautifully crisp.

Posto: Chef Massimo Fabbri still uses the dough recipe he learned in culinary school 16 years ago, and for good reason: The wood-fired pizzas at this Logan Circle trattoria have a crisp underside and a soft, bubbled rim.

Did you know? If you click the links of each of those restaurants' names, you can leave your own review of their pizza at that page!

This poll will stay open until noon on Tuesday.

*To help keep this contest fair, we've elected to use an IP address-based poll. This means that if you are voting from an office or network setting, not everybody will be able to vote. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we hope you'll encourage coworkers to vote from their home computers.

The wood oven encourages each ingredient in Posto’s pizza to come alive and awaken the senses. Its as though the smoke gently blends each ingredient into a delicious medley, yet each flavor is distinct. Mmmmm... Posto’s pizza takes your senses to Nirvana!

I just love it when people post on here without researching first and then they sound like idiots. Great job Tony!

I had a plain cheese pizza yesterday at Ella’s and was quite surprised, given the reviews in earlier rounds. It was SMALL! 10" wide. Excellent fresh mozz. Very fresh but kinda boring tomato sauce. Crust was white - no bubbles, no blackening, nothing on the bottom like grains or any other texture. Wonderful splash of extra virgin olive oil on top. But the thing that bugged me the most: my tiny plain pizza plus a pint of beer, including tax but before tip, was $18.65!!! Two slices and one pint at Pete’s including tax would be $11.00 and because the pies are 18" you would probably get the same if not more food in your tummy, and not have to leave a tip. (OK, maybe a buck at the register.) The more pizza I have in DC, the more I’m convinced Pete’s is the best in the city. Hands down.

You know "apizza" is what they call it in New Haven, right? It’s pronounced "ah-beets." I think they prefer to be called Pete’s New Haven and not Pete’s Apizza, because Pete’s Apizza sounds too much like Pizza-Pizza when you mispronounce the apizza. Posto has to have the most delectable Pizza around. Its not just delicious its..its Utterly-Incomprehensible. Not to mention the rest of the cuisine which makes the menu oh so delectable. The staff is fast and friendly which is just a compliment to the atmosphere if i can say so my self. I mean just taking a bite into this crispy yet gooey italian crafted slice of pizza, baked in the authentic italian brick oven imported straight from the heart of italy you find that it takes you to a simpler place and time which brings you to realize even standing still, It moves you!

Pete’s Apizza is the best pie south of Wooster Street. I grew up on New Haven pizza and Pete’s is awesome. Thin crust, fresh ingredients and creative combination’s make for great, affordable cuisine. The have a wonderful beer and wine list and a casual "everyone’s family" atmosphere.

I say again that the descriptions of the two pizza joints up for vote this week differ greatly.

Posto! Superb pizza...and everything else on the menu. We live in Boston and have been to D.C. 4 times this year...and always go to Posto. It is our favorite restaurant. In fact, we are going to D.C. this weekend and rest assured....we WILL visit Posto. Exceptional pizza, exceptional food, exceptional service.

I recently tried Posto’s pizza for the first time, and I can truly attest that it is the BEST! It’s authentic, wood, oven Italian pizza. Truly the best pizza in town!!

Love Love Love Love Love Pete’s. They couldn’t be nicer, their ingredients couldn’t be tastier, their pizzas and salads can’t be beat. And the pasta two. And the atmosphere. And the wine list. I secretly hope they lose so it doesn’t get TOO crowded there.
