The Pizza Pool: Radius vs. Ella's Wood Fired Pizza

We're onto the third round in our Pizza Pool! Vote today on who you think makes the best pizza in Washington.

Published Monday, August 31, 2009

UPDATE: This contest is over; Ella's won!

Well, folks, we've made it even further on figuring out the best pizza in Washington! We're on to the Edible Eight of our Washingtonian.com Pizza Pool. The eight remaining pizza spots will be posted over the course of the next few days. We'll still be posting two contests a day, and each will remain open for 24 hours. For a refresher on how the brackets will work, head here.

Radius Pizza: Pancetta, housemade sausage, and kalamata olives are just a few of the toppings available at this eat-in/delivery Mount Pleasant pizza place, now run by an alum of Poste and Black's Bar and Kitchen.

Ella's Wood Fired Pizza: Nearly 20 wood-fired pies are offered on this Penn Quarter spot's menu, including specialty combos such as the Lombardi (caramelized onions, gorgonzola, and rosemary) and the Polpotini (meatballs, leeks, and parmesan).

This poll will stay open until 3 PM on Tuesday.

*To help keep this contest fair, we've elected to use an IP address-based poll. This means that if you are voting from an office or network setting, not everybody will be able to vote. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we hope you'll encourage coworkers to vote from their home computers.

Anonymous, have you ever ordered anything besides pizza off the menu at Radius? Because the same could be said of Radius as Ella’s, if you come down to it. The entrees at Radius are reason enough to go, and the pies are fantastic.

Radius is a great, inexpensive place that’s convenient if you live in Mount Pleasant, but it simply isn’t the best pizza in DC. Ella’s pizza is just delicious! All of the ingredients are fresh, simple and high quality. There are lots of pizza choices! AND there are lots of things available if you don’t want pizza! Something for everyone in your group. All of this pizza voting is making me crave some delicious homemade vanilla ice cream from ella’s... or some chocolate pudding.

I’d trade my first born for a bowl of Ella’s meatballs.....

I had a plain cheese pizza today at Ella’s and was quite surprised, given the reviews in earlier rounds. It was SMALL! 10" wide. Excellent fresh mozz. Very simple and kinda boring tomato sauce (but fresh). Crust was white - no bubbles, no blackening, nothing on the bottom like grains or any other texture. Wonderful splash of extra virgin olive oil on top. Service was efficient. But the thing that bugged me the most: my tiny plain pizza plus a pint of beer, including tax but before tip, was $18.65!!! Two slices and one pint at Pete’s including tax would be $11.00 and because the pies are 18" you would probably get the same if not more, and not have to leave a tip. OK, maybe a buck at the register. A decent, if somewhat boring, "gourmet" "individual size" pizza with nice atmosphere and good service, but NOT the best in DC. Desperately wish I had the time to try the "new" Radius before the vote closes at 3PM, but I think I’m going to vote against Ellas, reluctantly.
