The Pizza Pool Finalists! RedRocks Pizzeria vs. Flippin' Pizza

The Pizza Pool has reached the finals! Vote now to make sure your favorite wins.

Published Thursday, September 03, 2009

UPDATE: This poll is now closed. Flippin' Pizza won! We will have a follow-up post about the Pizza Pool soon!

Well, folks, here we are. The Pizza Pool finals. When we first started the Pizza Pool back yonder (as in, late July), despite our experiences with the Burger Brackets, we still held on to certain preconceived notions about who would advance and even win. Pizzeria Paradiso? Surely. Comet Ping Pong? Without a doubt. 2 Amys? Naturally!

But, once again, our expectations were bested by loyal fans of pizza joints all over the greater metropolitan area. And as of Wednesday, the Pizza Pool came down to a Columbia Heights showdown between Pete's New Haven Apizza and RedRocks, and a face-off between Gallery Place spot Ella's and national chain Flippin' Pizza.

And now? We have our finalists! Check below to read about them, and to cast your vote. We'll be keeping this vote open extra-long (until noon on Thursday, September 10) so you have plenty of time to spread the word far and wide.

>> See the Pizza Pool bracket

RedRocks Pizzeria: This Columbia Heights pizzeria's Neapolitan-style pies are cooked at 750 to 900 degrees in a wood-burning, dome-shaped brick oven. Toppings—such as San Marzano tomatoes, arugula, capers, buffalo mozzarella, and Sicilian oregano—keep with the Italian vibe.

Flippin' Pizza: Although this chain was born in California, it was started by a Queens native, and the hand-tossed pies recall Broadway: You have to fold the crust to make a slice manageable.

This poll will stay open until noon on Thursday, September 10.

*To help keep this contest fair, we've elected to use an IP address-based poll. This means that if you are voting from an office or network setting, not everybody will be able to vote. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we hope you'll encourage coworkers to vote from their home computers.

Is this poll closed?

LULZ everybody that posted during this contest is was over reacting about pizza, im just glad the place that won was the one being posted against by the more annoying people. good job flippin

Posted by: lulz, Sep 10, 2009 11:19:58 AM

This contest has apparently been a travesty. A local DC favorite, Red Rocks, was "defeated" by a mediocre chain restaurant from the ’burbs that promised free pizza for those who voted for it. I think they should be disqualified and Red Rocks named the winner. Stuffing the ballot box and spamming the comments here has been incredibly lame, and poor sportsmanship on Flippin’s part. As for me, I wouldn’t patronize such an establishment unless there was a gun pointed at my head.

So I’m hungry for lunch...and I can’t decide...Value meal at McDs or the $5 pizza deal flippin’

Maybe the pizza--after all it’s cheaper.

Posted by: hungry, Sep 10, 2009 10:25:04 AM

I can’t believe people are this upset over a pizza contest...get a life you guys!!! how embarrassing...

Posted by: Kelly, Sep 10, 2009 09:09:14 AM

WAIT THE POOL IS CLOSED... WE STILL HAVE MORE VOTES... SO THATY MEANS WE WON.

FIND SOMETHING NEW TO COMPLAIN ABOUT. I HEAR THE COUNTRY IS A GOOD PLACE TO START.

Posted by: mosthated, Sep 10, 2009 09:08:33 AM

Just wondering... if Flippin’ is a chain with multiple locations and has huge following from their dough club, what has RedRocks done to keep up with the votes?? I’d love to know...

Posted by: hmm, Sep 10, 2009 09:03:07 AM

I just gave Flippin 1 star in that San Diego ranking you posted.

Posted by: Andrew, Sep 10, 2009 08:45:48 AM

Sara-

Thanks for the link. I saved a copy to the hard drive because I am sure Flippin will take it down.

This is definitely cheating. It’s like paying homeless people to vote for candidates.

They should be immediately disqualified.

Posted by: brian, Sep 10, 2009 08:25:41 AM

Since California voters think they should mess with they outcome of our votes, I think we should all make an effort to screw up the outcome of their contests too. If you go to http://kgtv.cityvoter.com/a-list, you can vote for some bests in San Diego right now. You can even add a business! It’s even better if you’ve never been to San Diego. Also - keep an eye out for the "best of" contests in the city papers of LA and San Francisco.

Posted by: Fair, Sep 10, 2009 08:21:59 AM

Griff - Either you work for Flippin, a fool or don’t know how to open your emails. I’ll say it again, Flippin has been offering Free Pies to all Dough Club Members in CA & VA for weeks "if" they win best pizza. I’ve received one about every 7-10 days ... for weeks. You’ll see others post links to the emails. So crawl back in your hole - moron.

Posted by: Straight Talker, Sep 10, 2009 08:21:04 AM

Whenever I’m in [city name here] I have to eat Flippin’ Pizza. It’s the only thing I know how to eat. [Make sure not to mention you’ve never left California. We want this contest to have the illusion of legitimacy]

Here is the link where Flippin offered Free Pizza. It’s true:

Flippin has been promising free pizza for weeks- how do you think they made it so far in the pool? There are links to the coupons in the comments, you can see for yourself exactly what they promise.

I dont have a problem with having Ledo or 5 Guys in the pool, they are chains but they are LOCAL chains, and THEY DID NOT ACTIVELY SOLICIT VOTES. I think they relied on support for their product to win the pool for them, which didn’t work out, but at least it was honest.

Pizza Pool- EPIC FAIL.

Next challenge: Who has the best Italian food in Washington?

Olive Garden or Buca di Beppo?

Posted by: ibc, Sep 10, 2009 07:40:08 AM

Hey Straight Talker-
Obviously you are incapable of reading simple emails. See... I’m part of the ’dough club’ too and NOT ONCE has there been any mention of free pizza being given to anyone. I will post a link to emails if necessary. Stop being a sore loser and keep your fake crap to yourself.

Posted by: xxGR!FFCORExx, Sep 10, 2009 07:13:11 AM

we have 8 locations ledos has 100. i think this means every one can shut up about us having multiple stores.

we obviously just have better food.

get off your high horse before some one gets you off of it for you.

Posted by: propizzaman, Sep 10, 2009 07:06:06 AM

In the burger challenge, 5 Guys was out in the second round and they many locations. Ledo’s has over 100 locations and they were out in the first round in this contest. Based on this it would lead one to believe it is not just the number of locations that matters....it’s about the product.

I guess it makes sense that a suburban pie chain based in California (one that has no DC locations) would be winning the "Washingtonian" pizza competition, since Washingtonian is essentially pablum for suburbanites anyway.

Washingtonian is all about Washington in the same way that everybody who lives in Manassas is "from Washington" when you run into them at Disneyland.

Posted by: ibc, Sep 10, 2009 06:50:09 AM

Hey Griff - Flippin has been sending emails for weeks telling all their Dough Club members in CA & VA that if they win, they’ll get a Free Pie. I know, I got them all. So don’t get stuck on stupid.

Posted by: Straight Talker, Sep 10, 2009 06:27:47 AM

First of all, anyone that says that Flippin is a national franchise has obviously NEVER spoken to anyone that works there. Secondly, no one has been told that they get free pizza just for voting for Flippin.

Get your shit straight before you try and trash talk anyone.

Posted by: xxGR!FFCORExx, Sep 10, 2009 05:56:33 AM

Red Rocks is great, definately the best. Petes is also good but my vote is for Petes

Posted by: Cliff, Sep 10, 2009 05:41:52 AM

anybody want to remove that last troll? and WA is the abbreviation for Washington state.

Posted by: andy, Sep 10, 2009 03:23:42 AM

Flippin Pizza is the only chain/franchise in the "pizza pool". Why are they even in the competition? Its obvious even to an old guy like me that this is a marketing scam. Phooey!

Posted by: Old Guy, Sep 09, 2009 08:01:10 PM

This is what Flippin is telling their customers in California and Virginia:

If Flippin wins, you win a FREE PIE!

Also, tell your friends and family to vote and join the Dough Club and they will win a free pie as well.

Some contest.

Posted by: Flipper, Sep 09, 2009 07:47:59 PM

I did a little research on this. A guy in San Diego who owns "Knockout Pizza" opened or bought a couple of pizzerias in that area and called them Flippin Pizza. Then they started a franchise. So, there are Knockout Pizza eclub members in San Diego voting for the best pizza in DC as they still go under the name of Knockout Pizza in 2 locations. That’s not right. So ... Washingtonian ... what are you going to do about it?

Posted by: R-1, Sep 09, 2009 07:15:10 PM

Did anyone else see Obama’s speech on washingtonian pizza pool reform tonight?

Had something to do with RedRocks winning because they are not only the best pizza in DC, but they are of, by, and for the District.

Posted by: PizzaSongoftheDamned, Sep 09, 2009 07:09:13 PM

I think Hugo is right. One of the bloggers wrote about their experience in "Encinitas". Thats in San Diego! The Washingtonian is trying to run a fun contest and Flippin has tainted it. They should only include local pizzerias. If Domino’s or Pizza Hut offered a free pizza to everyone that voted for them it would be no contest - right?. Leave out the chains. This is a local thing.

Posted by: Natasha, Sep 09, 2009 06:56:37 PM

I’m new to this area and honestly didn’t try either of these places until I read the blogs yesterday. So, I thought, why not be a neutral bystander and try both...in the same day...both with pepperoni and mushroom (my fave). I thought both were excellent, BUT, since I must choose just one to vote on, I gave the slight edge to Flippin’ Pizza. I loved the cheese and the crust was perfect for a NY style pie. Cheers to both.

Posted by: Dave Mathews, Sep 09, 2009 06:53:54 PM

Hugo,
That’s not fair! People in NoVa want a free pizza too.

Posted by: canihavemypizzanow?, Sep 09, 2009 06:50:23 PM

This contest has become a joke .. a bad joke. Flippin Pizza is not in the same ballpark as Pizza Paradiso, Amy’s or Red Rocks or any of the fine pizzerias in DC. Its a whole different product. Two huge slices of pizza and a soda for $5.00 .. come on. They are getting votes from customers in California who want a free pizza cuz they are a chain and they have an eClub. Whats that got to do with who has the best pizza in DC? Nothing? They shld be DQ’d.

Posted by: Hugo, Sep 09, 2009 06:45:01 PM

So... As someone who eats more-or-less weekly at Red Rocks, i trekked down to Flippin’ Pizza tonight with my son and his mother.

Flippin’ is VERY different. Flippin’ was an okay greasy, reheat, counter-service type spot a la jumbo slice, petes, south street in Philly, strip mall type spot, and of course a jillion spots in NYC.

It’s less pretentious, more expensive, less delicious/healthy/fresh. Staff showed my son how to flip pizza. i get the impression they do that for everyone. Virginia is a major minus--impossible to navigate if you don’t live there. Closest is falls Church--hardly appropriate for a DC area contest. But... was ok.

No comparison, though. Red Rocks is superior on all product-related fronts.

Tasty, sure, i could stop in if in the neighborhood. Nothing worth a drive.

Red rocks.

I love Zpizza!! I voted for them, twice! I don’t understand why Pizza Hut wasn’t in the contest though, they make a great pizza!

Posted by: Eden, Sep 09, 2009 01:58:12 PM

Good sports? Are you kidding me?

Good sports don’t blast a pizza place for being invited into a competition without trying their product.

Good sports don’t post nasty comments because they lost.

Good sports don’t claim foul when there are no official rules to speak of so they decide to make up their own rules.

Good sports don’t suggest that Flippin Pizza will be cast in a negative light because they chose to promote the competition to their customers.

If you want to be a good sport, taste each place and vote on YOUR favorite.

Don’t blast everyone else because they don’t agree with you. That shows your true colors and most rational people will see right through it.

BTW, look at their write-up in the Washington Post, by the food critic. I know, I know...the Washington Post is in on the conspiracy as well.

Posted by: Joe, Sep 09, 2009 01:49:12 PM

Pizza pool guy. Are you conceding? Don’t take defeat so hard. Was surprised at your sensitivity. Why don’t you go get a slice at Flippin’ to cheer yourself up. What a wimp!

Posted by: NYC Jim, Sep 09, 2009 01:49:08 PM

I’ll guess you one thing: winning the contest this way is not going to get Flippin’ Pizza the well-deserved editorial reviews that other DC-area pizzerias get in the magazine and on Washingtonian’s website, like 100 Best Restaurants, Cheap Eats, etc. If I were the editors, I would either DQ them, or let this contest fade into the past with a whimper. Way too bad. So many good competitors, good sports, including RedRocks.

Posted by: Pizza Pool Wizzard, Sep 09, 2009 12:30:37 PM

Seriously, Red Rock is turning people off with their negativity. That’s bush league. There is plenty of time to get out and try each pizza and then vote. That’s what I’ve done and voted for Flippin’. R u flippin’kidding me!

Posted by: NYC Jim, Sep 09, 2009 12:29:43 PM

OK, if the constant contact email campaign buying votes with a free pizza wasn’t enough, now the company has just added a new "future" DC location to its website, alongside the four "future" MD locations they had on the website at the start of the contest. The whole company is rigging the contest, adding bits and pieces here and there to bolster their legitimacy and sweep votes up from under couches and behind dressers. Check it out: coming soon, 1745 Connecticut Avenue, Dupont Circle. http://www.flippinpizza.com/?s=3#

--Sorry if this is a double post, my first post doesn’t seem to be here--
Seriously? There is no reason this should be a showdown between Flippin’ and RedRocks. There are many fine pizza restaurants in DC: MatchBox, Ellas, 2Amys -- any of them should come out ahead of a chain that most people in the DC area haven’t even heard as they don’t even have a store here.

And now we learn that Flippin’ is offering their list subscribers a free pizza if they win? That’s purely dishonest and taints this entire poll.

Anyone who is pissed off about this contest needs to take their issues up with The Washingtonian. The Washingtonian chose the pizza places for this competition and did not spell out any specific guidelines or rules other than IP voting.

Why is this Flippin’s problem. I have not been to either location but this is ridiculous that anyone would purposely bash another place because they are promoting their pizza.

Unbelievable some of you people.

Posted by: MisGuidedAnger, Sep 09, 2009 11:35:03 AM

Correction to the poster claiming Flippin is promoting free pizza to their California customers...This is wrong as that offer ONLY went to DC customers...let’s not manipulate the truth.

Posted by: Integrity, Sep 09, 2009 11:28:43 AM

The Washingtonian needs to require posters to register their email. This would eliminate most all of these negative posts as they would be accountable for their comments.

Posted by: Validemail, Sep 09, 2009 11:18:40 AM

I am from New York City. I am 65 years old. I have eaten pizza everywhere in the United States. I am in DC regularly. There are few good pizza places there. Until Flippin’ moved in recently, I was settling for what I could get until I returned to NYC. Flippin’ has the best crust, uses the finest Wisconsin cheese, with plenty of great sauce. I like regular cheese pies. There are plenty of ingredients on the pie, that why you have to fold it, to those of you who do not get it. You do not want the ingredients to fall off the slice. NY Jim has spoken...fugggetaboutit.

Posted by: NY Jim, Sep 09, 2009 10:43:35 AM

I agree, this contest has become a joke. There is no integrity in someone bribing their "Dough Club" members, mainly in CA, to vote for Flippin just so that they get a free pie! Check out the email they sent put:

http://campaign.constantcontact.com/render?v=001SjUNQDJHhrCRglctuEIhvV51g0-wtZI-d-0xYJPUH721-Ycct2QV4GMwTqaQbyZSczaEZKL8yPglb9hiwKvVMcif2jopPmP78Ls2k0Qwvuz4PKIhBH7-1NDvebRA5cmr4d8iTV35mV1kg0K3PD1dCg%3D%3D

Washingtonian should see that this is not about the best pizza in DC anymore (Flippin does NOT even have any locations in DC); and the votes are being rigged by their San Diego customers (check out the times of postings). It’s too bad, because I used to look up to this publication’s reviews..

Posted by: PPP, Sep 09, 2009 10:22:39 AM

Its obvious what is going on here. Flippin Pizza has offered all there eClub members a free pizza if they win. They have been doing that since the contest began. That includes all their eClub members in California. Thats where most of the votes are coming from. Flippin Pizza has only been open a few months in VA. They have not even opened yet in D.C. So, California customers are determining the outcome of the contest. That is ridiculous. They should be disqualified.

Three Brothers makes the best pizza in this area!(although not in the running and all locations are in MD)

Flippin was much better. Liked the whitestone pizza.

Posted by: Joshua Johnston, Sep 09, 2009 08:13:43 AM

Why are people so mad at Flippin Pizza? I am voting based upon what I enjoy to eat. RedRock is ok, but I really really enjoy Flippin’s thin crust pizza. I am going to spend my momey where I like the food and it fits within my budget.
I hope the best restaurant wins. Who cares if it’s a chain or not. These comments are too much. Come on really... its food for crying out loud!

Posted by: Abby Westhall, Sep 09, 2009 08:12:00 AM

I ate at Redrock the other night and the pizza was gross. Flippin was ok.
Unsure who to vote for.

Flippin is good.

Posted by: OceansideTeenager, Sep 09, 2009 08:08:31 AM

I am pretty suprised that the vote is still so close- Flippin is pimping the poll on their website, and their employees seem to be spamming the comment section. If you have Flippin here, why not have Pizza Hut and Sbarro’s? Why not California Pizza Kitchen? It would be a real downer to have a non-local chain without a store in DC become the "Best in DC"

Posted by: The Centzon Totochtin, Sep 09, 2009 08:04:06 AM

Actually the best pizza that I have had here was not even in your contest. It’s a stand alone restaurant in Tyson’s Corner. I believe it’s named Lucianne’s.

Posted by: Tom, Sep 09, 2009 07:53:27 AM

I live for Pizza from New Jersey and it is finnaly here in the form of flippin. I got two pies last week to bring home to the kids. Becasue of traffic on the beltway I had 6 slices by the time I got home. Thank god there wasn’t more traffic!

Posted by: Kenny, Sep 09, 2009 07:43:32 AM

California knows how to party.

These comments are ignorant. Why are people turning this into a "West Coast" vs. "East Coast" battle? I don’t care where the company originated, Japan - the moon - California -

If you like the pizza then you like it. If you don’t, you don’t. How hard is that? I don’t care who wins because I’ll eat where I want to anyway.

Now - back to reality.

Posted by: TuPac, Sep 09, 2009 07:41:13 AM

Lee, glad to see we have some relevant discussion on this board. You bring up a good point. Although, I remember the burger challenge and 5 Guys was out in the second round and they have a bunch of locations. Ledo’s has over 100 locations and they were out in the first round. Based on this it would lead one to believe it is not just the number of locations that matters.

It is still fun to see people react to their favorite place. I laugh cause there are a zillion pizza places and you are never going to get everyone to agree on one place. Judging by this board some people are trying:)

Ultimately, I think the Washingtonian needs to adjust their competition a little should they decide to do this again. Split the category or something, it is a tough one. Even if you do that I still think you will have the same problem.

Anyone else...Thoughts on how to improve this competition?
Jeff

Posted by: JeffMullins, Sep 09, 2009 07:22:26 AM

RedRocks Pizza is MUCH better! Try both for yourself and the difference will be obvious, both in quality and price.

Posted by: Bob, Sep 09, 2009 07:17:42 AM

Brian,
what’s more, a very DC thing to do would be to have Californians vote a Californian pizza chain for DC’s Best Pizza.

Posted by: JohnW, Sep 09, 2009 07:01:17 AM

Flippin = Pizza Mart

Posted by: AdamsMorgan, Sep 09, 2009 06:59:49 AM

I went to the South Lakes Flippin yesterday and got a slice of pepperoni. I had four pepperonis on my slice. Granted, all of their slices were the same price; but I guess you get what you pay for, since it only cost me $5 for two slices and a drink.

Posted by: EmmaP, Sep 09, 2009 06:58:13 AM

John,
Are you talking about Macks on the boardwalk in Wildwood? If so you are confusing places. I grew up on Oak Ave just down the street from Macks. The Pizza at Flippin is very similar to Macks. Red Rocks is good also but totally different style than Macks or Flippin.

Posted by: Julie H, Sep 09, 2009 06:56:36 AM

A very DC thing to do would be to vote a Californian pizza chain DC’s Best Pizza. This is what give DC a bad rap.

Posted by: Brian, Sep 09, 2009 06:49:46 AM

Go to RedRocks and get the Salsiccia. Real house made fennel sausage with fresh mozzarella.

Posted by: EricM, Sep 09, 2009 06:49:05 AM

So this Columbia Heights resident happened to have to make a trip out to Tyson’s Corner last night, and I stopped in at the Falls Church location of Flippin’ Pizza.

Flippin’ is a pretty decent New York style slice. Fine, I get it, and that’s worthy of some respect. But it’s no Red Rocks. Heck, for by the slice, it’s no Pete’s. Just because someplace is the best pizza neighborhood pizza place in four rather spread out locales doesn’t mean it’s better than a place that has succeeded and built a reputation despite its proximity to multiple other highly-regarded pizza places.

Posted by: Lee, Sep 09, 2009 06:46:57 AM

John, Are sure you were at a Flippin Pizza? You said the slices were small. They only have one size pie and its 18". They cut their pies into 1/8’s. If you got a small slice I don’t think you were at a Flippin. I have had both and I give Flippin a slight nod.

So I tried to get Flippin last night. I have had red rocks a couple of times. Unfortunately, they do not have ANY dc locations. I would probably give them a pass if they were independent locally owned store, however they are a CHAIN. If you are not good enough for the district, you are not good enough for my vote.

I don’t want some chain from California that I can’t even get in DC to be DC’s best pizza.

John, Are sure you were at a Flippin Pizza? You said the slices were small. They only have one size pie and its 18". They cut their pies into 1/8’s. If you got a small slice I don’t think you were at a Flippin. I have had both and I give Flippin a slight nod.

Posted by: TBD, Sep 09, 2009 06:37:01 AM

Red Rocks is da bomb! Some of the best pizza out there! All the ingredients are super fresh and top end; I asked and they don’t even have a freezer there. Definitely a rocking place. I’ve never been to Flippin but can’t say enough good stuff about Red Rocks.

Posted by: johnny, Sep 09, 2009 06:35:53 AM

The best pizza place in DC is DEFINITELY Flippin Pizza. That’s no competition. I’ve eaten at both places and Red Rocks just doesn’t even come close. Sorry.

Flippin Pizza... The Best.

Posted by: Griffin, Sep 09, 2009 06:28:39 AM

You are funny WestCoastBias. Hmmmmm, do you really make up 16 point or do you need to make up 7 or 8 points to get back to 50/50 conversely bringing the other party back to 50%...Either way you still are oddly upset and angry.

Most seem to be having fun with this yet there are a few getting REALLY upset...don’t think they are customers as I cannot see customers getting that upset over a stupid contest.

Posted by: WestCoastBiasisFunny, Sep 09, 2009 06:23:54 AM

This thing is a joke. I went to flippin pizza in falls church for the first time a couple weeks ago. It’s average at best. I don’t get the comment that you have to fold the slices to make them manageable - huh!?!? The slices are small. The fact that it ousted the italian store demonstrates that this thing is fraudulent.

Unfortunately, we don’t have very many good pizza places in the area. I was just up at the Jersey Shore - now there’s some real pizza at places like Mack’s.

I can’t believe people still think Washingtonian is still relevant. I guess for suburban types it is.

Jen
What’s truly amazing in how a 16 point lead can go to 2 points when most of the east coast IS ASLEEP! Explain that one, Jen! Who’s the idiot, Jen?

Posted by: WestCoastrBias., Sep 09, 2009 04:34:43 AM

Westcoastbias, you are truly an idiot.

There is ONE time stamp regardless of what part of the world you live in. That post has been there all day...It amazes me how many idiots are posting on this board.

Jen,
Hmmm, by the looks of the time code, it appears that you are based on the west coast since your post didn’t exist at 3:54 east coast time.

In my opinion, flippin pizza is by far the worst NY thin crust I have ever had. There is no body to the pizza,it is like eating straight melted cheese. The sauce is almost non-existent and totally tasteless. They don’t deserve to be in this competition.I was born in NY and there not even in the same league as any of the others.I was in there Encinitas location today and it was the last time.

Posted by: DelMarKid, Sep 08, 2009 07:51:04 PM

I like flippin pizza. Whoever does it best, That,s the name of the game.

Flippin has such tasty pizza!! Love it!

Posted by: Brit, Sep 08, 2009 03:30:39 PM

Flippin Pizza has some great pizza. I can’t beat the pizza by the slice, which is great for lunch.
The restaurant is clean, friendly staff and the pizza is true to new york. I do like redrock but not has much as Flippin. I am staying true to the best pizza out there- FLIPPIN PIZZA!
Thanks

GREAT Pizza at Flippin Pizza BY FAR!!!!
You haven’t had new york pizza until you have had Flippin.
Keep up the good JOB!!!!

Posted by: Carrie, Sep 08, 2009 02:06:49 PM

Alright, the wife and I had a fun pizza weekend. We went to RedRocks Friday night and Flippin Sunday night. We were expecting to like RedRocks better based on the posts but that was not the case. I had the margherita at RedRocks and the wide had the classic pepperoni. At Flippin I had the cheese and wife had the pepperoni. We were trying to keep them as even as possible so we could compare apples to apples.

We both liked the margherita pie at RedRocks...REALLY GOOD...a little better than the cheese at Flippin. However, we liked the pepperoni better at Flippin. Love those small pepperoni...lot’s of flavor.

We ended up splitting our votes (I for RedRocks and my wife for Flippin). Either way we thought both places were great and deserving of being in the finals. The only other place we would have liked to have seen is 2Amy’s as they serve a great pizza and we are huge fans.

Posted by: Daniel, Sep 08, 2009 01:58:20 PM

Everyone vote for Pizza Hu...I mean Flippin!

Posted by: Daniel, Sep 08, 2009 01:03:42 PM

BTW, I see a lot of people are reviewing the Flippin pizza by the slice pieces. NOT FAIR if you are reviewing a whole RedRocks pie, the full pie at flippin’ is usually MUCH better than their slices. Get a grip on reality people, you cant compare apples to oranges... The by the slice is one of the reasons flippin has made it so far I imagine.

Posted by: Ian, Sep 07, 2009 07:56:20 PM

Well, I’ve again had both in this contest. I voted for RedRocks this time around though. As much as I live flippin’ (I live in Reston, about 3 minutes away) there’s no way I can say its better than RedRocks. Although unlike other posters, I can say that I have had flippin pizza with a beautiful char and a decent amount of cheese. I guess its all in the location you visit. Honestly I am shocked to see that flippin made it this far as honestly I prefer a good Armands pie to the any day. Either way, I am always happy with RedRocks and their excellent ingredients and techniques.

Posted by: Ian, Sep 07, 2009 07:51:38 PM

This is the best dang pizza I have ever had...only drawback to "Flippin Pizza" is that they don’t have a Pizzeria in Tucson, AZ...don’t get to visit Washington DC too often.

Posted by: Allison, Sep 06, 2009 07:30:26 PM

Pizza and a good beer......flippin & sippin
that my vote!!!

Posted by: Janet, Sep 06, 2009 07:29:19 PM

Natas, I go to that Flippin and they cook in gas ovens just as they do in New York (which is where I am from).

You didn’t go to Flippin and you are a liar...get a life.

Posted by: Natasisaliar, Sep 06, 2009 11:57:24 AM

forgot to mention the dough is flavorless..

Posted by: natas, Sep 06, 2009 10:44:06 AM

well, I caved. Just got back from the Falls Church Flippin Pizza. Ugh, pasty pale dough with no sign of char, cooked in an electric (!) oven, topped with canned (I hope it’s not made in house, but honestly don’t see where they would have room) sauce and chewy low grade loaf mozzarella. The pizza is really big and you can fold it, I guess that’s where "New York" comes into the picture. Also, there is a flyer taped to the top of the box updating the status in this contest, ("thanks for getting us to the finals! Polls open until the 10th, please vote for us!)

Only positive, it’s cheap.

Thanks for advice...I am off today:)

Posted by: CaliforniaFlippinManager, Sep 05, 2009 12:32:24 PM

Hey California Manager,
Just some friendly advice - stop commenting on the web boards. You’re just fueling these boards by being on them. Go manage your store.

Posted by: JustSaying, Sep 05, 2009 10:11:35 AM

And another thing June, the way people are acting on these boards I wouldn’t be surprised if the post about the Vista store came from a competitor and not a customer of Flippin. The managers did not even know about competition until semi-finals when we were asked to personally vote. I doubt that made the difference.

Think about it. a California customer comes in and we say, "Hey, vote for us for Best Pizza in DC?" LOL, that is not how we operate. We are not going to pimp out our California stores for a few votes. We don’t even promote our local contest other than an email to our email club members.

If people would give us a chance and taste the pizza they might have a different idea. California has more New Yorkers than New York:) and we have them coming from all over. I don’t think this would be the case if our product wasn’t good.

June, it’s a bummer that Ella’s lost but it doesn’t mean that you need to post nasty comments on this board.

Posted by: CaliforniaFlippinManager, Sep 05, 2009 10:08:59 AM

June, that was a completely bogus post and it pissed me off as it is not true. We can’t control if someone gets on a board and thinks they might be doing a good thing.

I don’t care if you believe it or not. You can call any store in California and ask if they are distributing flyers or promoting the Best Pizza in DC and they won’t even know about it (except the GM’s).

Although, seeing that most negative posters have an agenda I wouldn’t be surprised if someone were to post that they called and the employees told them they were promoting and distributing flyers. Unfortunately, there are too many dishonest people on this board.

June, which pizzeria do you work for?

Posted by: CaliforniaFlippinManager, Sep 05, 2009 09:54:29 AM

Manager, you are full of it. One of the posts in the last round that Flippin stole was from someone IN California who said she was never in DC and that the "boys" who worked at her store told her and her friends to go on line and vote. So if you are not promoting it, someone is

Posted by: June, Sep 05, 2009 08:22:20 AM

I don’t know where this idea comes from. I am from Brooklyn and I moved to DC six years ago. I have been to Flippin’ several times and was always unimpressed. The idea that it’s just like NY pizza is a total crock. They are ok, I have gone more than once, but it is NOT NY pizza by any stretch of the imagination.

Posted by: Brooklyn, Sep 05, 2009 08:13:09 AM

Posted by: itsjustacontestpeople, Sep 04, 2009 06:41:44 PM

Natas,

I would think both restaurants would be happy about the publicity... Wouldn’t any business?

Not going to lie, I just saw this contest while on the Washingtonian Website and these comments sucked me in. I never realized how passionate people were about pizza or rather discussing best pizza based on the number of store locations they have.

From an outsider’s perspective (I’ve never tried either one), Flippin’ Pizza must be good or else they wouldn’t be able to get this far. I think RedRocks is winning from the anti-Flippin Pizza voters... I feel like someone should try both pizzas and vote based on the taste and experience.

Just my two cents :)

Posted by: Amused Bystander, Sep 04, 2009 04:29:13 PM

I’m usually the first one to the front of the line saying buy local over a chain - I never frequent McDonald’s, TGIFriday’s, etc.

However, taste rules. And while RedRocks makes a decent pie, I have to admit that Flippin’s pies are =really= good. While I think that Mama Lucia’s on Rockville Pike make a better pie, Flippin is second in my book to what a true NY pie should be.

So, those of you voting for RedRocks just because they’re not a chain, please try Flippin first. You might be surprised. I was.

Posted by: Daniel, Sep 04, 2009 03:31:08 PM

It’s sad to see some of you wasting time and effort on posting irrelevant comments about the finalists. Just go out there, try both pizzas, come back to vote and make a respectful and informed comment on your experience.

That’s what this is all about.

Posted by: Dave, Sep 04, 2009 02:04:55 PM

Why wouldn’t a national chain like Flippin’ Pizza use this opportunity to get free advertising. The marketing department must be happy. Never had their pizza. I voted RedRocks..

Posted by: natas , Sep 04, 2009 12:51:43 PM

I am a Manager at one of the Flippin stores in California and we are not promoting this at all in California. The owner asked us to vote but specifically did not want to have the California stores participate.

We have our own voting we are doing with the 10 News A-list and that is what we are promoting right now. Winning Best Pizza in DC does nothing for our brand in California so I am not sure why people would say we are promoting it in California.

Posted by: CaliforniaFlippinManager, Sep 04, 2009 11:29:49 AM

I was at Flippin’ Reston locations yesterday--it’s near my work. And they had flyers at the front promoting voting for them--I bet the flyers are in the CA locations too. I have tried their pizza. And when you need a really cheap lunch, it’s really pretty good, but the best pizza in DC? Come on.

Posted by: sue97, Sep 04, 2009 11:19:23 AM

Again, assumptions. I am choosing to look at the obvious. We don’t know how many people visit their website. I cannot imagine too many as they do not have order online and it looks to be for locations and menu only.

If their pizza was crappy I could see your point but their pizza is really good (different style than RedRocks). I think people should do more tasting and less bashing and have some fun with the contest.

Posted by: John Byer, Sep 04, 2009 11:13:34 AM

and, JohnByer, the contest is on the homepage of their website with a full-page, direct link to the contest. That’s at least one source for the California votes.

Posted by: anonymous, Sep 04, 2009 10:21:47 AM

what does it matter how many stores they have, their pizza is the bomb and they have my vote!!

Posted by: T, Sep 04, 2009 10:19:31 AM

Voting for the Flippin chain is like voting for TGI Fridays or Applebees. Red Rocks all the way!

Posted by: MZ, Sep 04, 2009 09:36:04 AM

JohnByer, they have 8 stores, and four are in California.

Posted by: TimBrant, Sep 04, 2009 09:34:30 AM

We want Flippin Pizza, they are tasty!

Posted by: td, Sep 04, 2009 08:47:31 AM

thinking about thin crust and healthy pizza, then go with Flippin Pizza! they are the best

Posted by: bn, Sep 04, 2009 08:46:03 AM

This is crazy...all of these posts and no one is stating the obvious.

Flippin has 4 stores and promoting the contest in all 4 stores (I am assuming this because the are in Falls Church). The competitors have 1 store.

Normal logic is they have 4 times the customers and have an advantage. Why is everyone claiming votes are coming from California?

I am sure employees and owner have friends and family voting but what place in this contest isn’t doing the same? If someone says all of their votes are from customers unsolicited and in the DC area and no friends and family...they are lying.

Posted by: JohnByer, Sep 04, 2009 08:43:49 AM

Carrie, I understand what you are saying, however, you are making an assumption and assumptions bread ignorance. You are choosing to boycott Flippin based on an assumption and on top of that posting nasty comments about them without ever giving them a try.

Think about it...does that seem rational to you?

Posted by: NoMoreFun, Sep 04, 2009 08:35:09 AM

Matt the pizzaguy at flippin’ pizza is the best out.He is so good that i drive from virginia beach to flippin at least once a week.I recommend that he gets a award for the best PizzaMan.

Posted by: liiilandiifromVB, Sep 04, 2009 08:24:39 AM

NoMoreFun, it’s not my logic that is flawed it’s your ability to comprehend. I think a place who’s votes are heavily weighted by people who have never been to DC creates an unfair advantage and they don’t belong in this contest.

Posted by: Carrie, Sep 04, 2009 08:08:39 AM

Still upset about the obvious malfunction of the Ella’s vs Flippin round - that percentage didn’t change for hours! Either way, I absolutely agree with ColumbiaHeights in saying that RedRocks made an enormous contribution to our community by moving in and helping the transition from a dangerous street corner to a great place to gather. Their patio is a fantastic place to enjoy and evening pizza and beer! You’ve got my vote RedRocks and I hope you don’t get caught in what happened in the last round with Flippin! Good luck and keep doing what you’re doing - making great pizza!

Posted by: Mike, Sep 04, 2009 07:24:23 AM

I just moved here in May from the Upper West Side of Manhattan. I am single and eat pizza 3 nights per week. You have only got one real New York pizza house here in NVA and that is Flippin Pizza. I don’t care if they are from California...they are the real deal. Here is my take on why their Pie is so good. Just like Lombardi’s, Grimaldi’s and DiFara’s in New York, they only do pizza and salad. They don’t do pasta, subs, wings ect. They concentrate on one concept and that is pie. Thats what puts Flippin right up there with these other classics from New York. By the way Flippin folks can we buy your Ranch dressngs from stores? Where?

JL, have you tasted Flippin? ...I suggest you do before commenting on it...that’s what this conversation is about. Thanks for your contribution to the discussion.

Posted by: LJ, Sep 04, 2009 06:45:06 AM

I agree about preferring Coke over Pepsi and admit to have been driven to order a Peroni instead as it was sitting on ice at Flippin by the cashier and it was great with my pizza. Flippin was very good and actually very fast for a gourmet pizza. I like being able to order a slice and not the whole pizza. Also, I take them home and reheat them in a cast iron skillet and the bottom is crispy and the topping is delicious. And by the way, what is wrong with a great pizza that has made it to the top two that is bringing economy to a lot of communities in this region. If you can keep the quality up.....go Flippin Pizza and open more locations and help our local economy and unemployment issues.

Posted by: Ps, Sep 04, 2009 06:42:17 AM

Flippin? If I wanted chain pizza, I’d order Papa Johns. Thanks.

Posted by: JL, Sep 03, 2009 10:00:56 PM

I love RedRocks pizza and have voted or them. I also love the fact that they helped transform a street corner in Columbia Heights that was once known more for its drug dealers than great pizza. We now have Room 11 and soon to open Meridian Pint on that same block. Thanks RedRocks.

Posted by: ColumbiaHeights, Sep 03, 2009 07:33:24 PM

There’s something special about a neighborhood restaurant where you can watch them cook your pizza in an authentic Italian wood oven, while drinking a Chimay or Peroni draft. No offense to the Flippin’ crowd, but reheated pizza in a strip mall while drinking Pepsi products doesn’t quite warrant best pizza in DC. I actually like the pizza but serving Pepsi instead of Coke, come on.

Posted by: sarah, Sep 03, 2009 07:15:41 PM

Flippin Pizza is my new favorite! Their white pies - Whitestone & Tomato Basil - are to die for if you prefer white, NY style like me - YUM! I like that its casual, contemporary decor so its fun to hang out, but also easy to get a pie or slices to go.

Posted by: Sarah, Sep 03, 2009 06:52:05 PM

just so its out there Flippin plans on opening in DC within a year, so get ready for an invasion of flavor, by the way most of the staff for Flippin are in their 20’s and 30’s and aim to excel and please, have a great night and thanks for the support Flippin fans!!

Posted by: Flippin worker, Sep 03, 2009 06:32:17 PM

It is amazing reading these posts as about 1/2 of them seem to be written by the contestants. I have tried several of the Flippin locations and the pizza is very good at all of them as well as the atmosphere is clean, casual and comfortable. Having a mom from Italy I have eaten pizza 63 years and I compare this pizza to the kind I find in traveling to Italy as well as NYC. Because a family or company is successful and has initiative to open more than one store doesnt make them a chain. I agree with the comments that one should try the competition and make a post. Then the information can be useful to the readers as well as the people running the pizza restaurants.

Posted by: idi, Sep 03, 2009 06:24:14 PM

haha flippin pizza apparently has a large staff of 16 year olds in their employ ready to spam the comments section. i’ve never been to red rocks but I plan to check it out soon. at least its IN dc.

Posted by: JK, Sep 03, 2009 06:04:49 PM

red rocks can kick rocks. flippin isn’t a major chain they own a few stores in two states not all across america. sorry bout your luck. they just doing a couple things right. oh by the way go check out the tattooed pizzaman in chantilly he makes the pizza amazingly well and he’s great.

VOTE FLIPPIN’ PLEASE :)

Posted by: Abigail, Sep 03, 2009 05:26:52 PM

Carrie, your logic seems to be flawed. So if a new pizza place comes to town and they win it is illegitimate? Why wouldn’t you take the approach to try every place and make an educated decision based on tasting all of them?

I voted for Ella’s and I am upset they lost but I am not going to boycott Flippin as that seems a little sophomoric, doesn’t it?

Posted by: NoMoreFun, Sep 03, 2009 04:15:56 PM

NoMoreFun, I agree with your point of how it’s supposed to work, but it is also supposed to be a dc discussion for people who know the competitors. I looked to this competition to see how my community ranks our local pizza places and get some new ideas of places to go. That is not how this turned out though.

I plan to go to the top seven of the eight finalists, but I won’t be going to Flippin Pizza because I do not consider their wins legitimate. Not sure if I will vote for RedRock yet, but I won’t vote for the other one.

Posted by: observe, Sep 03, 2009 02:08:06 PM

I agree with JimMo except I did not believe Flippin to be greasy. This match-up is like trying to compare apples to oranges. They both have great pizzas and I still don’t know which way I am going to vote.

Washingtonian should split title. Best new york style and best neapolitan style.

Posted by: alaaro, Sep 03, 2009 01:35:39 PM

Been to both. Two completely different styles of pizza. If you like greasy NY-style slices that are reheated served on paper plates - then its Flippin. If you want a more Neapolitan-style individual pie with fresh mozzarella and other fresh ingredients - then its RedRocks. I like both styles but it seems that RedRocks puts more care into their pizzas.

Travesty that Red Rocks beat Pete’s. Sad day for C Heights.

Posted by: g, Sep 03, 2009 12:49:13 PM

I have not been to Flippin yet but have heard great things. I like Ellas and voted for them and I was upset that Ellas lost but I think it is unfair what a lot of posters are doing. As I can see from Flippin Pizzas website they have 4 stores in California and 4 in DC. It’s not like they are Dominoes.

This contest is supposed to be fun. My husband and I are going to try Flippin and Redrocks this weekend and vote on which we like the best. That is how it is supposed to work.

Posted by: NoMoreFun, Sep 03, 2009 12:40:37 PM

Washingtonian, you should close the comment section down while the polls are open for a full week. It has gotten really nasty in Flippin’s last two rounds, and it does not seem like it is helpful any more. The contest has really lost its original fun purpose. Tooo baaad. Many of the other contests were really quite fun to watch, and comments either fun to read or actually helpful. The last two with Flippin’ in them have given me a headache. It seems like a "comment section stuffing"
