I too, had a horrendous experience at Vidalia. Previous visits were phenomenal, but for RW dinner, our server Alex was abrasive and shockingly ride. He told me friend not to bend the menu "becasue they are very expensive." Never have I been treated more like a second-class citizen. I guess I have to pay full price for good service.

Allow me to elaborate. Hook overbooked, had a shortage of hostess staff, and was generally a hot mess. First, they were way behind. As in, we were seated at 8:40 pm for an 8:00 reservation. Isn’t that why you make a reservation? Second, we had two waiters. First guy disappeared but our second waiter reassured they work “as a team”. Right. Third, they didn’t bring us bread. I’m Italian and I firmly believe every meal should include bread with the exception of maybe sushi. It’s not that Hook doesn’t serve bread with the meal – they just didn’t bring any to us. Fourth, there were so many people the floor was literally bouncing up and down. Fifth, they gave us the wrong bill. We had a party of three. The bill was for six dinners. The waiter was genuinely surprised it wasn’t our bill. Duh. I will say that the food was delightful and I would give it another chance at service but NOT during RW.

4 young professionals went to Poste on Saturday for brunch. Obviously, as staffers we weren’t rolling in dough, but we were treated very, very well. The food was delicious (much better than I expected), the service was excellent, and when there was a problem with our tab they were extremely helpful (we ordered flights of wine--unexpected, but a lovely brunch treat!--but they charged us more for white wine than red). We loved Poste, and will go again (perhaps after we make our first million).

I had the opportunity to visit several restaurants during this current Restaurant Week.
1) Vermillion in Alexandria - For the most part, it was a disappointment. The Butternut Squash soup was especially disappointing. No one at our table enjoyed it. The cannelloni received a thumbs up and the filet was ok, just not spectacular. Desserts were not very memorable.
2) Kellari Taverna - Excellent service and beautiful surroundings. Spanakopita
and lamb were excellent. Baklava was phenomenal.
Very pleasant experience.
3) Chef Geoff’s - Sunday brunch was horribly disappointing. Entrees were uninspiring. Although I thought the grits were seasoned perfectly, the others at the table found them to be too salty. The desserts were terrible. The apple tart reminded us of a frozen Pepperadge Farm dessert, you could not taste the marscapone in the pumpkin-marscapone cake.
4) PS 7’s - A fabulous dining experience. All of us were extremely happy with the food and the service. Standouts were the tuna sliders, Sarah’s sald, Buzzed Beef, and the Hazelnut Candy Bar. Bread basket was excellent Service was phenomenal. Our server was very helpful and the hostess even researched a wine for us. Top-notch all the way!
5) La Tasca - Excellent restaurant week special with unlimited tapas. An excellent value. Standout dishes were the chicken croquetas, tortilla especiale, and the eggplant. Gave diners the ability to experiment with dishes they have never ordered before. Service was great - our server Leo was very helpful and a lot of fun.

Ris was really amazing, one of the best meals I’ve ever had! Extremely flavorful, hearty portions, great service, relaxed yet elegant atmosphere. My dinner companions and I will all be back!! I’m glad they took RW so seriously.

Dinner on Tuesday at Poste was amazing.
Dinner on Thursday at Farmers & Fishers was the worst out-to-dinner experience I’ve ever had- from the server to the food it was a complete waste of nearly 3 hours---we couldn’t wait to get out of there!

Dinner at Firefly on Thursday -- very good food, attentive service. Had to wait for about 15’ at 8.30 despite a reservation, but did not mind the wait and the hostess offered to pick up the bar tab. Brussels sprouts were very good, the beets were truly superb -- light, cooked just right and wonderfully flavorful. Scallops were very good as well. It was my first time there for dinner, and I will return for sure.

Went to Art and Soul. I thought it was disappointing. I had Ahi Tuna for an app which was great, but the rest of the meal was less than stellar. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. Doubt I would go back.

Boyfriend was super sweet and made reservations around town:
Bombay Club - Restaurant Week wasn’t a deal at all. My meal cost ten cents more than if I had ordered it off of the menu! Lamb ranganoosh was chewy. Service was so-so.
DC Coast - Despite having reservations, we waited 1.5 hours. The crab cakes were fishy. Despite being starving from the long wait, I couldn’t eat the second one. Boyfriend’s wild bass was blah. Once seated, service was okay.
Bistro Bis - Steak tartar was well sized and great. Coq au vin was bone dry. The sauce was bitter. Service was slow.
Ruth’s Chris (DC Convention Center) - Great steak special. Service was horrible, but the meat made up for it.
Not sure why keep doing Restaurant Week, every year, twice a year. More disappointing meals than not. With the deal being nothing more than free dessert (which we don’t eat anyway) (unless you eat at Bombay Club and they trick you out of a dime), it just ain’t what it used to be. C’est la vie my foodie friends.

I want to Oyamel on a busy Thursday. Despite my lack of a reservation and my being a single woman alone, I received excellent service. The food was more of a mixed bag. The ceviche tasted like nothing but cilantro and fire. And does anyone really like cactus salad--c’mon, be honest! The squash salad, on the other hand, was very good, as was the short ribs dish. I didn’t like the chocolate pudding dessert--it had a sour taste. Would I go back? For the service and the short ribs, yes, but that’s not enough.

Tallula was a wonderful pick for Restaurant Week! We were treated like VIPs from the moment we arrived. They offered their entire dinner menu, and with no upcharges. The warm mushroom salad and huckleberry almond cake were superb. I chose duck for my entree (first time trying it), and I was a tad disappointed, but I think that’s just because duck may not be my thing. Another person ordered it and was quite pleased. Again, the service, ambiance, and food were absolutely wonderful. Go to Tallula!

Had RW dinner at Asia Nine. Service was fine but the food was excellent. I had the Octopus salad and the Salmon Udon Noodle Entree and they both were delicious. My dining companions also had a great meal.

Tried Hudson Restaurant and Lounge for lunch for the first time. The service was excellent and the ambiance bright and cheerful. The beet salad was delicious but the mushroom risotto was gummy and had tough mushrooms scattered on top. I might try it again in a non-RW week.
Posted by: BBH, Jan 20, 2010 07:53:06 AM
Bombay Club was wonderful! Service, quantity of RW selections and service were all excellent. Our server was perfect - not hovering but helpful to my two guests who are not familiar with Indian food.
Sunday lunch at Art & Soul was mixed. The service was wonderful, I’d let them know it was a special occasion and they made sure to give us a private booth. Our server never rushed us, even asked us before our dessert was served, "are you ready for dessert, or would you like to wait awhile?" Unfortunately, the food wasnt as wonderful. Appetizers were fine, the fried chicken, which I was eagerly anticipating, was only okay and the mashed potatoes were awful - gummy puree. I wish I had asked if I could get the waffles instead of potatoes. Desserts were extremely disappointing - especially the cold, gelatanous bread pudding.

Was really looking forward to the dinner Sat. night at Art and Soul...boy..what a let down! The best part was the tuna appetizer but my chicken dish was a plate of "blah". I didn’t even finish the dry chocolate "spice" chocolate cake...which is an absolute no-no for a confirmed chocoholic. I feel a restaurant should put their best foot forward to gain new customers...but they turned us off for sure. Too bad!

Dino’s was excellent. Other couple included a vegetarian with allergies. and they did not bat an eye. Menu balanced and vegetarian friendly as well. Restaurant week was from the full regular menu, and only a few dishes carried a clearly noted upcharge. The food is interesting, from roast pig to 500 day aged proscuitto Good service, too.
The thing that I really appreciate is how easy they made RW. Too often there is a special menu, or you have elaborate rules, or various other annoyances. Dino’s was seamless and left nothing but good will as a result.

I went to PS7, but did not have the same experience as Erin B. I went with a group of 8 people, and the service was AWFUL. We went at lunch, and expected to be there a little over our lunch hour, but not for two hours! The service was slow, and we felt like she forgot about us. I am not sure if I would recommend this place to others, though the food was amazing.

Trekked out to the Mandarin for Sunday lunch. The decor is niceand the food was pretty good, but the poor service was a disappointment and made it difficult to enjoy the meal. The restaurant wasn’t crowded at all, but we had to wait a long time for everything (e.g. coffee finally came after the first course, dishes sat a long time before being taken away). The highlight of the meal was our order of hushpuppies - they were scrumptious. Had been looking forward to it but wouldn’t go back.

My husband and I went to TenPenh, which I’ve already tried on separate occasions, but it was a first for my hubby. The appetizer selections, though paired down a bit from the regular menu, were plentiful and lived up to their expectations. For entree, I had the Ahi Tuna and hubby had the Mahi - both were WOWZA amazing and bursting with interesting flavors, textures, etc. (a characteristic I have some to expect and love about TenPenh). Service was efficient, knowledgable and friendly - my "Big 3" expectations for service. Thank you TenPenh for a wonderful RW experience!

Zaytinya is a big winner this RW, and I usually stay away from mezze/tapas during RW because I think they’re usually a deal year-round. Everything - from the atmosphere to the staff to the menu and last but by no means least the food - was absolutely superb.
Dino was also fantastic, and you always have to give them extra credit coming out of the gate for their wonderful attitude toward RW. The food was delicious and prefect for a cold winter night, and 33% off wine bottles priced $50 or more did its share warming us up as well!

I went to two places: Logan Tavern and PS7. Both places were fabulous.
Logan Tavern had a very extensive RW menu, with all the appetizers and salads on their menu available as a first course, and a glass of wine included in the dinner price. I had seared scallops on a bed of polenta. The dessert menu was also extensive--maybe six different selections? And quite delish. Our server, Patric, was attentive and the manager even stopped by our table to make sure we were happy. I believe they are extending RW as well, so check it out if you can!
PS7 was is an awesome RW choice. Our server was also extremely attentive and had some great suggestions. I cannot stress how delicious the tuna sliders were. As an appetizer, the best I’ve ever had in DC! And they also offered a tenderloin on the menu, which almost all of our table ordered and we all gave it great reviews.

Had a WONDERFUL dinner Friday night at Bezu in Potomac. The risotto cake app was wonderful - the mushroom on top cooked to perfection.

Dinner at Vidalia was amazing. It was actually our anniversary when we went, and they printed out a special "Happy Anniversary" restaurant week menu which we were able to take home. The service was exceptional. It was very quick for everything that we ordered to come out, but we didn’t feel rushed at all. The trout appetizer was one of the highlights, although a little less impressed with the posole, which could have used a little more heat (I’m from New Mexico, so I do have very high standards for this dish). The Shrimp and Grits were of course great, as was the duck breast perfectly cooked. Thumbs Up!
Posted by: T.S., Jan 19, 2010 05:47:56 PM
Slightly disappointed with dinner at Vidalia. Several friends recommended the shrimp & grits, which were amazing. However, our appetizers - the tagliatelle and mushroom risotto were just okay. My husband ordered the pork belly and was not impressed. It was a very tiny portion. Our desserts were the highlight of the evening - the lemon chess pie for him and the peanut butter crunch for myself. We did feel rushed by the wait staff - we were in and out in just over an hour and that includes the time we lingered to finish the bottle of wine we ordered!

We had dinner at Chef Geoff’s and it was pretty good; they offered the whole menu. Service was good. I was a bit disappointed with my dessert though. I ordered the hot crab and spinach dip for an appetizer, the crabcakes as an entree, and the granny apple tart (?) for dessert. It was pretty full for a weeknight though we went around happy hour.

Agree with Rivka about Bourbon Steak lunch. One of the best burgers I’ve ever had with great service. Free valet parking too for lunch. Only thing is that I should have done my homework since it violated one of the core RW rules--don’t do RW at a place if they already have a similar menu. Bourbon Steak has their burger menu year round in the bar/lounge area and it’s a better deal since it’s just 90 cents more and includes a non-alcoholic drink (my Diet Coke was $5). Still in all very satisfied with the meal and definitely coming back in future.

Hands-down, Vidalia does the best RW lunch. The chef came out to our table and talked to us about the food, and even sent out an extra side of superb grits. Steak Tartare was heavenly - the quail egg on one end was great, but the syrah sorbet on the other side of the dish was fantastic. The shrimp and grits were - as always - wonderful, owing in part (I’m sure) that Vidalia attracts former chefs from S.N.O.B. (Slightly North of Broad) in Charleston. My only complaint? No salt and pepper on the table.

Dinner at Hook was wonderful - great service, lovely food, no indication that it was restaurant week. Really fantastic.
Lunch at Bibiana was good - attentive service but the food was mixed - I enjoyed my risotto much more than my two dining companions enjoyed their entrees. But outstanding desserts.
Dinner at Vidalia was SUPER disappointing - the food was delicious, but the service was horrendous. The waiters hovered and the courses were brought out right after one another, with no break. They were out of the bottle of wine we ordered to have with our entree, but we had to wait for the recommended replacement to be chilled - which we were notified of after our entrees has been brought out. It was quite disappointing, and even the quality of the food didn’t make up for the poor quality of the service.

I went with colleagues to Oceanaire for lunch during RW- we were disappointed by the lack of offerings for the RW menu and by the service. Although the food was consistently good, we felt rushed from start to finish, with the server clearing our plates at each course before everyone had finished. The service in general was curt and perfunctory. I know RW isn’t the best time to judge a restaurant’s performance- both in terms of food and service- but we expected better during an 11:30 lunch.
In contrast, RW dinners at Liberty Tavern and Mendocino were delightful- it was nice to be able to choose from their full menus, servers were pleasant and incredibly knowledgeable, and the food was excellent.

I tried La Tasca (first time)for lunch all you can eat tapas from their RW menu. Coworker had thinly sliced fried potatoes(2 dipping sauces),fried eggplant(1 dipping sauce) Veggie Paella and for dessert she chose ice cream, I had a small bowl olives, bacon wrapped shrimp and scallops which were very salty until I removed the bacon, Patatas Bravas and for my dessert I had the Churros with chocolate dipping sauce. Come to find out they have all you can eat tapas on Wednesdays for $20.09.

Went to Birch and Barley (the restaurant underneath Church Key) for my only RW meal. The wait was disappointing (waited 45 minutes to be seated after having made a reservation) and they sat us next to the huge window which would have been pretty if it weren’t FREEZING. After bringing over space heaters that didn’t help, they later moved us to a warmer booth. That being said, our server was lovely and definitely tried to make the experience great.
The food ranged from mediocre to superb. The appetizers were ok, I tried sweet bread for the first time surrounded by a wonderful radish soup. The scallops, however, were surprisingly bland. I had a superb pasta entre with lamb, but my friend’s pork cheeks were way too salty.
The maple ice-cream served with a chocolate doughnut was fantastic! I highly recommend it or the lemon curd topped with a toasted meringue. All and all worth a visit, but not spectacular.

Went to Rasika, The Palm, Inti, and Perry’s. I absolutely love, love, love Rasika. Rasika’s definitely my new favorite. Please check the review I posted on my blog http://tinyurl.com/rasikadc. The Palm not so much (Here’s another review http://tinyurl.com/palmdc)
Inti was a tiny Peruvian Restaurant, located next to Lauriol Plaza. The food and drinks were delicious. I’m not sure if it was included in Restaurant Week, I doubt it, but the food was very good and the service was excellent. Tried Perry’s in Dupont Circle for Sunday’s Drag Brunch. That was definitely an experience and the brunch was delish!

Hook called me and told me they had "overbooked" and could I reschedule? I not so politely said no, you are not an airline, and scored a last minute reservation at Ardeo, which was wonderful.

Went to New Heights for Restaurant Week last week. Only real complaint I have was the wait. We had made reservations for two beforehand and still had to wait at the bar downstairs for a half-hour before being seated because they were so backed up.
The scallop was very well seared. The short rib was OK, but stringy. Funny enough, the highlight of the dinner was the deep-fried kale that was served with the short rib. It was AMAZING. Never had kale like that before.
The chocolate cake was good, but the doughnuts were better.

Zaytinya was absolutely superb. Delicious spanakopita, excellent shrimp, reliably tasty hommous and baba ghannouge with light airy pita. Desserts were fantastic.

My experience at Ceiba was not good! Went on Sunday evening for dinner. They were out of 5 entree selections (Snapper, Pork Shank, Chicken, etc.), leaving VERY limited choices available for the RW menu w/o a $9 supplement! Depiste that the apps (Shrimp Ceviche and Black Bean Soup were good) and one main course, the vegatarian tamales were good! The other main course, Cochinita Pibil, tasted like the meat was microwaved? Finally, the desert, chocolate cake and carrot cake was some of the driest/blandest I’ve ever had. Such a dissapointment, because I’ve had numerous great meals here.

RW at Cafe Atlantico was sub-par. Our server was pushy and the cod i ordered came out lukewarm. it’s unlikely that i’ll return there.

We made it out to Volt and can HIGHLY recommend it. From start to finish, we were blown away by the food and the service. Those of us coming from DC misjudged the time it would take to get to Frederick and arrived 30 minutes late. Our friend coming from Baltimore (who arrived on-time) was able to explain the situation and the folks at Volt were completely accommodating, even though they had every right to turn our table loose.
From the moment we sat down, we were well-tended to by a friendly, cheerful staff, but never rushed. And each bite of the three-hour meal was even better than the last. Highlights have to include the cheese plate, goat cheese ravioli, dorado, and pork tenderloin...not to mention the bread selection. Oh, and they sent us each home with a muffin.
Our only regret was not having time to adequately explore Frederick--looks like an adorable downtown. I’m sure we’ll be back, though. One trip to Volt is hardly enough.

went to Zatinya - great selection and service! surprised by the walnut chicken!

Art and Soul was excellent! Their famous "hoecakes" weren’t offered as part of the RW special, but I highly recommend ordering one anyways, it was well worth it and big enough to share. They are also expanding their RW until Jan 24th.

great lunch at Zola, didnt treat us like RW crowd.... though the service was politely slow. not ideal for heading back to work. anything on the menu, which made the deal worthwhile, and i enjoyed my lobster mac and cheese very much.

I managed to snag a reservation at Volt right after hearing the Winter RW announcement in December. I LOVED it. The food was absolutely excellent - I had a goat cheese ravioli as my appetizer and I could’ve eaten that for my second and third courses. The lamb shoulder was succulent. And the chocolate 3 ways was just creamy, crunchy, sweet goodness.
The service was also surprisingly great - I expected stuffy, snooty wait staff but everyone was quite nice and attentive.

I tried 701, and I was pleasantly surprised. They were packed - I had managed to secure a 9:15 reservation the day before, but a group without a reservation was turned away when my date and I were waiting to be seated, so it must have been a popular RW destination. I was pleased with the variety of options offered on the menu - it had even more choices than I saw listed on the Washingtonian’s RW menu listings. My date and I both had the green salad with manchego cheese - could have used a little more manchego but overall it was refreshing and crisp, which is what I was looking for. I was very happy to see that they brought us a bread basket with three different types of bread, 2 of each - cornbread, foccacia, and your typical dinner roll. My entree was great - I got the Scottish Salmon. The fish was cooked well and very flavorful, and the roasted fennel on the side was tender and buttery. I tried a bite of my friend’s choice - the baked potato ravioli - it tasted exactly like a twice baked potato, which I didn’t love but she did. Desserts were the brownie for her; flourless chocolate cake for me. Both were delicious and rich - we could only eat half. Overall I liked 701 as a RW pick - service was decent for how busy they were, food was inventive and satisfying, atmosphere was energetic. I’d probably go back to try their normal menu another time. My only complaint here is that the wine list is outrageous - there is not one bottle under $40 - I would have at least expected something in the $30 range given the overall affordability of the food.

Had lunch at Bistro Bis and it was AMAZING! Onion soup, the most incredible Croque Madame, and White Chocolate Blood Orange Creme Brulee. What a deal...

We went to Ruth’s Chris (DuPont)this time. They had good service (they didn’t treat us like restaurant week customers) and good food. The best entree was a 6oz filet and 3 shrimp. So you basically get the salad, side, and dessert for free (which were all good). So if you’re in the mood for a steak, I recommend it.
This was in stark contrast to I Ricchi, last time. The service was horrible, the menu was small and the food was not good. I’ve been there outside of RW and have enjoyed it but will never go back again. If you’re going to treat rw week customers like second class citizens, don’t participate in rw. You’ve lost a customer who can afford to go outside of rw and who’s office is right down the street for business lunches.

I attended restaurant week dinner at District Chophouse on 7th st. We had a large party, but I felt the service was sub-par even so. We had to wait a long time for our waiter to even take our orders. That being said, District Chophouse does have one of the better deals of DC restaurant week. Appetizer, salad, entree, side and dessert. They had great selections for entrees too, including chicken marsala, NY strip, crab cakes, and citris tuna. Besides the tuna and steak being a little overcooked in our party’s opinion, the rest of the food was superb!

Againn had a FABULOUS lunch restaurant week menu. I highly recommend the cauliflower soup and sticky toffee pudding dessert!
Posted by: Kim, Jan 19, 2010 09:12:12 AM
I broke my usual rule of staying home during RW and tried two spots: first was Bourbon Steak for lunch, which was a pretty good deal. Order any burger off the regular burger menu, plus a side (fries, onion rings, or salad), plus dessert. Burgers were incredible (tried three; grass-fed was my favorite), salad and fries were decent if fries were a bit tepid. dessert was throwaway brownie concoction, but burger alone was worth it. Second was New Heights for dinner, which was sort of a let-down. Chicken liver was distinctly tinny and unpleasant -- neither of us finished it; short rib was downright dry, and risotto with rye croutons was well-made but bizarre. Desserts were good, but mazala donuts with caramel sauce were way too sweet.

Highly recommend Restaurant Week dinner at both Ceiba (ceviche, pork shank, flan) and Restaurant Vero (changing menu, but had salad, filet mignon, and chocolate bread pudding). Both had good service, good food, and intimate atmosphere.

Zengo’s was amazing! They offered almost their full menu, the food was fantastic, and the service was great. Only qualm was that it did seem like you weren’t really saving much- the deal was basically that dessert was free.
Delivious, though.
