Daily dispatches on the Washington, DC area's food, restaurant and dining scene.

Which Whoopie Wins?

Lots of places are serving whoopie pies. But which ones are worth the calories? We tried nearly 20 to find the best.

By Kate Nerenberg

Whoopie pies, the puck-size sandwich cakes that look like the offspring of an Oreo and a cupcake, are the handheld dessert of the moment, showing up at restaurants, bakeries, and supermarkets. We tried nearly 20 to find the best.

Eat Wonky. We give the gold medal to this food truck, which sells a changing cast of flavors (all $3) made at Sweet Ladies Bakery in Springfield. Our favorites were the moist chocolate cakes bookending vanilla and peanut-butter fillings. Locations at twitter.com/eatwonky.

Red Hook Lobster Pound. A close second is the Brooklyn-made pie ($3.50)—chocolate with marshmallowy filling—from this lobster-roll truck. Locations at twitter.com/lobstertruckdc.

Corner Bakery. Although this chain cafe uses cloyingly sweet icing—the vanilla is better than the peanut butter—the cakes ($1.75) had a nostalgic appeal and reminded us of Hostess Suzy Q’s. Multiple area locations.

Chris’s Cookies. Sure, they’re unconventional—purists might balk at the flat cakes and sparse filling—but the two-bite lemon renditions ($4.99 a dozen) from the New Jersey–based maker are tasty. Available at Whole Foods (multiple area locations).

I don’t know how Corner Bakery’s Whoopie is there over Bayou Bakery’s "Oreo" whoopie.

Ya gotta try the "home made" whoopie pies at Whole Foods in Fair Lakes - they are HUGE, yummy and sell out faster than Lady Ga Ga tix. There’s gotta be something good about ’em when they sell that fast!

The best are at Hello Cupcake -- they use cupcake tops for the cookie part. Lobster truck’s were dry--but they just started with a new supplier, which I haven’t tried yet.

Red Hook’s whoopie pies are not as good as Corner Bakery’s. I disagree with the article in that I found the peanut butter whoopie to be amazing!
