Evening Star Cafe Debuts Brunch Menu

Chicken and waffles, anyone? The Del Ray restaurant begins serving Southern-style dishes in the daytime this Sunday.

A new brunch is always good news, and never more so than when it’s within stumbling distance of the spot where you sleep. So Del Ray denizens should be pretty happy about the news that Southern-leaning (and pretty darn adorable) Evening Star Cafe will debut a new brunch this Sunday. Saturday service starts on February 4.

As he does at dinner, chef Jim Jeffords, a Georgia native, is pulling from his roots at the mid-morning meal. While the final menu is being tweaked, a restaurant rep did say the following dishes were definite: French toast, dressed in Meemaw’s (that’s what Jeffords calls his grammy) apples, bourbon syrup, candied pecans, and whipped cream ($10); chicken and waffles, another down-South stalwart, drizzled in a butter-honey hot sauce with house-made bacon bits ($13); and “The Duke” breakfast sandwich, which comes with a grilled andouille patty, egg, cheddar, and arugula on a house-made biscuit with Duke’s mayonnaise ($9).

The rep also mentioned the Evening Star Bloody Mary, featuring Bloody Mary mix made in house, pickled okra juice, and hot sauce, for $7.50; and the Mad Cap (named for Mad Cap coffee), with cold-brewed coffee, Armagnac, Chambord, chocolate bitters, and brandied cherries. That costs $8.

Beginning February 4, brunch will be served on Saturday from 11 AM to 2:30 PM. Sunday service, which starts this weekend, goes from 10 AM to 2:30 PM.

So, Aaron: Hi. Evening Star closed late 2011 for a remodel, then re-opened with Jeffords and his new menu. But they have only been serving dinner. But now, brunch is back.

Ummm, when did they stop doing brunch? I haven’t been in a year or so, but I use to go there every Sunday for brunch.
