To Do: Sake Dinner at Perry's
By
Sara Levine
Tonight’s your last chance to indulge in the special kaiseki (sake-paired) seven-course tasting menu at Perry's, the swanky sushi/Asian fusion spot in Adams Morgan. Looking to catch up with a friend or impress a date? Then this leisurely, yet well-paced meal is $60 well spent. Dishes include such conversation pieces as an amuse of “tofu pate” on brioche and a soba-noodle roll stuffed with crab, as well as straightforward presentations of very fresh fish, like white tuna sashimi and poached hamachi.
After the seventh course, you’ll leave full but not stuffed, as Perry’s food tends to be light and healthful. Don’t be turned off by nods to good nutrition (buckwheat risotto; a cake sweetened with yams for dessert)—nothing tastes like health food. A dainty glass of sake accompanies each course, and servers provide knowledgeable explanations behind each pairing. The slightly sweet kiuchi yuzu wine with dessert was our favorite.
If you miss this special menu, chef Noriaki Yasutake offers omakase any day of the week, with tastes from his sushi bar and dishes from the kitchen, also for $60. I'd expect an innovative parade of courses—Yasutake has won competitions for his original sushi, and the always-inventive Morou Ouattara (of Farrah Olivia) is Perry's consulting chef.
The 23-year-old restaurant is perhaps best-known for its lovely rooftop terrace, which will open for dinner in late March—"or earlier, if the weather stays this nice," says owner Saied Azali.
