To Do: The Tap Project

This past Sunday marked the first day of the Tap Project, a weeklong fundraiser initiated by UNICEF to offer clean and accessible drinking water to children all over the world. More than 100 restaurants in the Washington area are asking customers to donate $1—or as much as they’d like to give—to drink tap water, normally free of charge.
The project was launched last year in New York City. At more than 300 restaurants, the city raised $100,000 and provided 4 million children with clean water. This year, UNICEF expanded the idea to include 13 cities around the country.
More than 5,000 children die every day from water-borne diseases, but UNICEF’s efforts since 1990 have allowed 1.2 billion people access to clean drinking water. For every dollar donated to the Tap Project, one child can drink safe water for 40 days.
The fundraiser ends on Saturday, March 22, which has been designated World Water Day by the United Nations. Click here to donate money and see the list of participating restaurants.
