Fourth of July Recipe: Jeremy Onesko’s Muddle America Cocktail

By Kate Nerenberg

WestEnd Bistro bartender Jeremy Onesko mixes this fizzy drink at all his family cookouts. With a base of rye whiskey, it couldn’t be a better pairing for the fireworks on Independence Day: The spirit was the sip of choice for our founding fathers after they chased away the redcoats.

Muddle America

Serves 1

5 to 7 plump blackberries
5 to 6 fresh mint leaves
1 ounce simple syrup
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
1½ ounces rye whiskey
1 12-ounce bottle ginger beer

In a shaker, muddle the blackberries with the mint leaves. Add the simple syrup, lemon juice, and whiskey and shake with ice. Strain over fresh ice into a tall highball glass and top with ginger beer.

I don’t think of rye whiskey as something that could be refreshing, but this cocktail is fantastic. Use a high quality ginger beer and the spice of the ginger with the fruit works perfectly. Kudos!

The drink is called Muddle America, named by Jeremy Onesko himself. Go chat with him at the bar, find out the story and report back to us! We’d all love to know!
