A Night Out: Good Stuff Eatery Opening Party

Spike smiles in the crowd during his Monday night party.
Crowds eager for a taste of Spike Mendelsohn’s burgers have waited in lines stretching down the block for the past week, but the former Top Chef contestant’s Good Stuff Eatery (303 Pennsylvania Ave., SE) hosted its official opening party Monday night. Spike and his family—mom, dad, and sis are co-owners—closed the restaurant for the evening and rolled out a red carpet for a few special VIPs: fellow Top Cheffers Antonia Lofaso, Lisa Fernandes, and Stephanie Izard, last season’s lovable winner. The red carpet and ribbon cutting seemed a bit ridiculous for a burger joint, but Spike’s clearly having fun with his newfound “celebrity” status.
These newly minted reality-TV stars mingled with friends, food media, and a few local chefs while sampling slider-size versions of Good Stuff’s burgers, little paper cones of fries, and miniature milkshakes. For those not in the mood for the super-sweet toasted-marshmallow shake, Champagne was flowing.
In person, the cheftestants came across as . . . well, pretty much the same as they did on TV. We don’t buy all the grumbling about Bravo’s editing. Check out our video interviews and photo slide show from the party.

I, too, went opening week and would not wait 40 minutes (or 4 minutes) again. I can be somewhat forgiving of opening week hiccups, but I cannot forgive a seared (done outside/raw inside) burger. The fries were cold and limp. The shakes weren’t ready when the food order was called. The food, which wasn’t hot to begin with, got cold waiting for the shakes. Tables were filthy. The counter needs fewer, but more efficient, staff. The burgers are reasonbly-priced, but the shakes are expensive!

The food is fantastic! I can’t wait to go back! I’m craving a burger and milkshake from Good Stuff now. Yum!

I have to sadly agree with some of the naysayers. I went opening week and also saw the lines. Then, one of my friends went in to check out the wait, and guess what, there was virtually no line, and we were being held outside to show a long wait, we bypassed his dad - and got in line inside.
Sadly, all of the burgers were in fact pre-made, and they were about the same size as 5 guys, despite pics saying they’re opposed to "assembly-line" burgers. the fries were great as was the shake, but not sure how often I’d make the trip from Senate side.
Will try it one more time since it may have been opening week mess ups.

Closed from 3-5? Seriously? "They were slammed" was the excuse....isn’t being slammed what you would want in owning a restaurant?

I think that its funny how people could comment on prepping the food but if they had to wait an extra 10 minutes for the burgers to be cooked they would be complaining about that also! The burgers were great,(and fresh!) fries were amazing, and the milkshakes, WOW!

I find it kind of strange that someone could post a comment stating that the burgers are not made to order and are sitting under a heat lamp. How could this be possible if the lines are out the door and they are serving an insane amount of hamburgers daily? Just makes you wonder what people are talking about when they post comments. The toasted marshmallow shake is unbelievable.

I went just after the restaurant opened and had the best burger i’ve ever had in my life. most importantly, it wasn’t overcooked. with so many people coming in and the long lines, the burgers aren’t sitting under heat lamps for long. if you had a restaurant where you served 100 orders (or more...what do i know?) in an hour, you’d be prepping all of your food, too. the staff was extremely nice and accommodating...they went above and beyond what i expected from being so busy. and futhermore...5 guys specializes in an enormous amount of food. i’ve never been anywhere where the burgers weigh so much. i’d much rather go somewhere and eat and be full instead of being overly full.

i humbly disagree- they are leaps and bounds over 5 guys in terms of quality.
5 guys always gives me indigestion. this didn’t.

I have to say, I loved the burgers, wanted to marry the fries and am now having dreams about the toasted marshmallow milkshakes. Good Stuff Eatery gets my full endorsement.

This guy is milking it. Of course he’s standing by the pretty girls.

Too bad the food doesn’t match the hype.
The fries are tasty, but neither the burgers nor the fries are made to order -- both are sitting under the heat lamps, along with the lettuce and other condiments -- some piled 3 or 4 deep. They’ve got a ton of people working at the counter, mostly standing around, with a long line. Couldn’t those people be making the burgers fresh? You’d think if you paid 13 dollars for burgers, fries, and a coke, you’d get something made fresh.
A replacement for 5 guys it is not.

This week, Opentable.com is spearheading a promotion to get cash-strapped diners back into the city’s banquettes. If you can’t make it out this week, plenty of other promotions are going strong.
