Best of Washington: Lemonade

Nine sweet kids, one clear winner for the best lemonade.

By Kate Nerenberg

A panel of nine thirsty second-graders at DC’s Beauvoir Elementary rated Newman’s Own the best store-bought lemonade for quenching a summertime thirst. Sweaty from soccer practice, most of the kids selected Newman’s Own Old-Fashioned Roadside Virgin Lemonade as their favorite over the Whole Foods 365 brand, Nantucket Nectars, Odwalla, and Country Time mix.

Why Newman’s? “It’s like candy,” one eight-year-old said.

Country Time, the kids squealed, tasted like water with a drop of lemon. “Don’t try it!” one warned.

For adults, we recommend a lemonade with a kick. Bartenders at the stylish (but now-closed) Butterfield 9 mix a surprisingly light B9 Moonshine—a shake of house-made lemonade, Jack Daniel’s, and Southern Comfort. The bourbon is just sweet enough to make this taste like candy for the over-21 set.

Not really a great model for a lemonade taste test. When I was 8 years old, I definitely would have chosen the most syrupy-sweet one, which is probably not what I or most adults would choose now. The quote says it all.

That bourbon lemonade cocktail does sound delicious though.
