Have Your Cake and Eat It, Too: Area Bakeries With Gluten-Free Sweets

By Nicole Duncan

Hello Cupcake offers a different gluten-free flavor each week.

Take it from me: It’s tough being a gluten-free girl in a very wheaty world. Besides having limited entrée options (no pizza, pasta, or sandwiches), my taste buds are going through a sweets withdrawal. I covet but never consume cupcakes, while brownies have become the star of my hunger-driven daydreams.

Given my dessert addiction, I was ecstatic to discover gluten-free cupcakes at Love Café (part of the local CakeLove chain) on DC’s U Street. And as it turns out, a few other bakeries around the area offer tasty alternatives for those of us who can’t eat wheat. Here are some of them.

Buzz Bakery
Along with its regular offerings, this bakery has gluten-free vanilla and chocolate cupcakes ($2.75 each) with buttercream flavors including espresso, raspberry, and coconut. Buzz also makes gluten-free brownies ($2.50) and Gluten Free Bird brownies ($3), which are made with fudge, espresso, and nuts. Gluten-free cakes can be custom-made in 48 hours; contact Buzz for prices.
901 Slaters Ln., Alexandria; 703-600-2899.

CakeLove
All CakeLove locations sell gluten-free vanilla and chocolate cupcakes ($3.50 each), and customers can special-order gluten-free layer cakes and cheesecakes (contact CakeLove for prices). CakeLove is considering expanding its gluten-free selection to include cake by the slice ($7.50 each). If enough customers are interested, it could become part of the regular menu.
Locations in Silver Spring, Tysons Corner, Shirlington, and on DC's U Street.

Hello Cupcake
This new Dupont Circle bakery features a different flavor of gluten-free cupcake each week. Last week was carrot cake (cutely named 24 Carrot), and this week it’s a vanilla cupcake with buttercream frostings changing daily.
1351 Connecticut Ave., NW; 202-861-2253.

Sticky Fingers Bakery
Your fingers are bound to be sticky after one of these gluten-free chocolate or spice cupcakes ($2 each, $22.80 for a dozen). Sticky Fingers, a vegan bakery, also sells gluten-free chocolate-chip cookies ($1.75 each, $19.95 for a dozen) and cakes ($30 to $45).
1370 Park Rd., NW; 202-299-9700.

Red Velvet has multiple locations and they sell gluten-free vegan cupcakes - both chocolate and vanilla.

They are delicious, and perfect for the many, many people who must be both gluten-free and dairy-free.

Moving to DC area....around Tysons Corner....any bakery with glutin free goodies willing to take on someone who loves to bake and in past year has had to go glutin free? I would love to work in a bakery ....don’t want to go back to the stressful Hospital scene and want to just "bake!" have taken some cake decorating courses too...learning fondant....since moving for my husbands CPA position....I can start my second career! and the glutin free baking would be awesome too!

There’s a lady who bakes GF birthday and wedding cakes - you have to order from her but her stuff is awesome! Cheaper than CakeLove and places like that too. It’s www.cherryblossomcakesdc.com. She made my son’s birthday cake and even the non GF guests raved about it.

Went to Buzz and it was good! Their creme brule is awesome. They had run out of cupcakes when I got there and that was upsetting. I had brownies there, but they were under-cooked. Taste on everything was great! I’ll go there again and again and again to try all their stuff. The more gluten-free they offer, the better!

Not cupcakes, but the Original Pancake House in Falls Church offers great gluten-free pancakes, including blueberry, chocolate chip and a few other flavors.

There is a brand-new cupcake shop at 116 South Royal Street in Old Town, Alexandria. The name is Lavender Moon Cupcakery. They hope to have a different gluten-free cupcake each week. Their cupcakes are $3.00 each. ($30/dozen)

If anyone’s actually tried some of these, please let us know which ones are the best. My sister’s on a g/f diet, and I always like to have good suggestions when she comes into town.
