Sidewalk Style: Twice as Nice
We stop a pair of friends with very distinct styles.

Beth Havrilla, 27
Fine-art painter
Jennifer Lasher, 26
Solo musician
On Beth: Anthropologie coat, Urban Outfitters scarf, vintage lace gloves, Marc Jacobs bag, H&M tights, and shoes from Anthropologie.
On Jennifer: Coat from Burlington Coat Factory, Salvage shirt, Wal-Mart tights, leg warmers from Up Against the Wall, Nine West boots, and earrings from a boutique in Annapolis (“I don’t remember which one”).
How would you describe your style?
Beth: “Audrey Hepburn if she were six years old!” (Jennifer calls Beth a “modern Mary Poppins.”) “Classic and definitely girly. I’m a total magpie.”
Jennifer: “Boujie goth.”
Beth, I love those shoes! “They’re the Anthropologie brand. I made the little ties out of some fabric. It came with polka-dot ones. I just switched them out.”
Jennifer, what’s the last thing you bought? “Snowboarding undergarments. Fleece long underwear, basically. I’m going to Whistler [Vancouver] in a few weeks.”
Any favorite places to shop? “Patricia Field, Marc Jacobs, Decades, and Opening Ceremony in New York. That’s my favorite,” says Beth.
Rachel says: Winter is a great season for dramatic style statements, no matter your look. Beth’s subtle but detailed accessories add lots of visual interest while keeping her warm at the same time, and Jennifer’s coat and earrings are hippie classics.

I think they both look stunning!!

I’m loving the styles because its cold out and layers are allowed to be ambiguous yet also super creative. Beth’s hair, banged and silky works great with those snuggy layers of baby blue, in the grip of father winter. She shows off thin, warm black leggings jutting out of all those cuddly swoops.
Jen’s bohemian double threat peppered hair goes well with the long tendril earrings and the so very thin summer evening outfit covered by Wyatt Earp. I like the art student splatters against the log cabin trench coat.
Together they can both go to a party or go dancing and then bundle up while scuttling off to a green power hybrid and do it without feeling boring, boxed in, or left out in the cold.

My mom still has her silver tap shoes from 1954... Beth’s shoes look just like them. Totally love ’em!!

While I would never wear Jennifer’s coat myself, it does remind me of something Kate Hudson would wear in Almost Famous and with her long blond hair and graphic tee, it works for her.
I do love Beth’s look: Parisian chic with a bit of quirkiness.

I’m really digging Beth’s look, but Jennifer’s coat could best be described as an example of "homeless cowgirl" chic.
I like that Beth’s coat is fairly fitted, and the tights make her legs seem 8 miles long. The little splash of color on her shoes additionally serves as an invitation to check out her legs.
On Jennifer, I love the boots & tights look, but the coat completely overshadows that. The shirt is also not a great color choice for her. I think she needs a bolder shade to emphasize her natural coloring, and something that’s fitted or cinched at the waist to emphasize her long, lean torso.
