Sidewalk Style: In Bloom

When we need a fashion fix, we know we can count on the stylish students at Howard University such as freshman Shavonne Holman.

By Rachel Cothran

Shavonne Holman, 18
Freshman studying psychology

What she’s wearing: Leather jacket from Wilson’s Leather, Gap sweater, Forever 21 jeans, boots from Steve Madden, silver hoops from H&M, and flower pin from Claire’s.

Favorite thing in her closet: Her Joe’s jeans. “They’re the darkest blue without being black, skinny, and the fit is great.”

Tell us about your style. “I’m pretty casual. This is a little dressed up for me. I like vibrant colors, and I like my accessories to match.”

What’s the style scene at Howard? “You can be unique here. You can dress any way you want and get away with it.”

What staples do you see on the girls? “Uggs, graphic tees, and skinny jeans.”

And the guys? “We’ve gotten away from baggy pants, which I’m happy about! A lot of them have started to wear more sophisticated styles, like bow ties and cardigans. H&M is also a shopping hotspot for the guys.”

Rachel says:
Flower pins were hugely popular a few years ago thanks to Sex and the City, and suddenly these blooms look fresh again. One in a neutral, coordinating color streamlines a look that’s polished, feminine, and fun.

this outfit too over board. She needs a longer sweater and western thing doesn’t work very well here.

Ugh! A tad over the top, unless you’re going out on a date...maybe I’m showing my age, but we didn’t dress like that in college, and I went to Vanderbilt!
