Sidewalk Style: The DJ’s in the Details

For this week’s Sidewalk Style, we ran into a young DJ who’s into details, tailoring, and how the music scene influences fashion.

By Rachel Cothran   Published Tuesday, March 17, 2009

Philip Goyette, 23
DJ and Urban Outfitters employee

What he’s wearing:
Levi’s 511 jeans, Charles 8½ leather jacket, Triple 5 Soul military-inspired jacket, Sneaky Steve shoes (“They’re great—I have them in white, too”).

Are you wearing anything from Urban Outfitters?
“Actually, pretty much everything I’m wearing. The buyers are really good at finding designers.”

How would you describe your style?
“I try to go for things that are tailored. I like anything current and ahead of the curve.”

Where else do you shop?
“Stussy, Durkl, American Apparel, Palce5ive, and Commonwealth.”

How would you say the music scene is influencing fashion in Washington?
“With bands like U.S. Royalty getting national press—it’s been in Spin and Nylon, for example—people are realizing that it’s not just about dressing for the performance. People have been feeling the need to step up their game.”

Rachel says:
The strength in Philip’s look lies in the details. Well-cut, dark denim, cool shoes, and perfectly layered jackets all add up to a great look. I love how the detail of the outer jacket’s pockets complements the exposed seam on the cuff of the jeans.

Weigh in on Philip's look!

He looks great. The top jacket is especially nice.

Full confession: I’m his mom. I like it. Maybe I should say I hate it, so the really hip people can feel free to like it, but...I like it.

That reminds me, I need to purchase my 300th pair of skinny jeans, along with about a dozen or so deep v-neck tshirts.
