How would you describe your style?
“My primary style is a mix of bohemian and boardroom. I love to wear suits and very formal attire and then soften and breathe street life into it with vintage and thrift clothing—like blending a Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc to create a Meritage. I’m not the boy next door, so I sure as hell don’t want to dress like him. I’m never without my Glenn Gould gloves in the fall and winter months, whether its a pair from CVS that I’ll cut or ones that are precut and sewn. I grew up in the projects, now I own a corporation, and from a career perspective, my lifestyle is rooted in the art and sciences, so these parts of me are reflected in how I dress. I carry it with me at home in DC or when I go to Los Angeles or Paris.”

Any looks in particular you stick to?
“Big pants with wid legs contrasted with fitted shirts and jackets complement my build. Regardless of the season, nothing beats a white T-shirt that hugs and shows off the body. Cool in the summer, warm in the winter. A staple. Calvin Klein and Target’s Merona brand have the tees down to a science.”

What was the last thing you bought?
“I bought a four-pocket wool overcoat—Humphrey Bogart style circa 1947, or maybe even Dragnet circa 1951.”

What’s on your wish list for fall and winter?
“On my wish list this year is a wool duffle coat. I’ve loved them since I was a kid and had one from the old Morton’s or maybe G.C. Murphy store. They’re so versatile—they work in the office, on the street, or at the Metropolitan Opera.”

Rachel says:
I like the sportiness of Ty’s look. I snapped this photo on a weekend when everyone else was wearing jeans and sweats. He still looked comfortable but dressed up in a very personal way. Generally, I think shirts are best tucked in with vests and waistcoats, but this looked right on him and added to the sporty/casual look he was going for.
