Sidewalk Style: The Perfect Cut

The cut on this gent’s suit caught our eye.

By Rachel Cothran

Peter Sulick, 27
Graduate student

What he’s wearing:
Adam Lippes suit, Polo sweater, J. Crew shirt.

Name a few things every guy should have in his closet.
“One gray suit, one blue suit, comfortable chinos and shirts, and some Levi’s.”

The fit on that suit is perfect. Do you have a tailor in town you like?
“All I had to have done to this one was hem the pants. I don’t really know much about the designer, but I saw the fabric and loved it. It’s this dark houndstooth. And I also love that the buttons at the sleeve are real. But for tailors, Cheryl A. Lofton & Associates in Shaw is a great place for basics. They’re quick, professional, and cheap. Field’s in Georgetown is one of the best suit tailors I’ve ever visited. They’re expensive but well worth it for a perfect fit.”

Where do you shop, and what are some of your favorite labels?
“American Apparel for T-shirts, Levi’s for jeans, and J. Crew for polo for shirts and sweaters. Suits are a different story. The key is finding a brand that has a cut that fits you well. Burberry and Zenga fit me perfectly off the rack, so that’s what I generally buy.”

Do you have any pet peeves for men’s styles?
“Grownups with backpacks. We’re not in high school anymore. Get yourself a more adult means of carrying your gym clothes, please. Also, chunky square-toe shoes. Buy high-quality shoes in classic styles. Aldens are my personal choice. They’ll last a long time and just get better with age.”

Rachel says:
I can’t say enough about the difference a well-cut suit makes. And I agree about the shoes—square-toe just looks dated.

This guy is completely gorgeous, largely due to his dress. His suit fits well, it is just more of a "trendy" cut than classic. And as for the green, I think we could all use some more appropriate use of color in this bland city.I agree that the shoes need a shine though, and I am very disappointed in the lackluster pocket-square.

PS. Backpacks on adults is gross. Fashion always comes before function for me because in this life it is all about appearances. And with that backpack, you appear to be 12.

Okay, this is so weird...but I saw him that day, and noticed the suit. He looked great. It wasn’t tight. I think the fact that he had his hands in his pockets for the photo is throwing it off. But I mean...it was freezing.

Grrrrrrowl....He looks great to me!

Underwhelmed hit the nail on the head here. Perfect fit this is not. And shoes could use a good cobbler, ASAP. I don’t mind the v-neck sweater/dress shirt combo, but if you’re gonna layer like that you’ve gotta account for it with the jacket. The aviators are a nice touch.

Who the hell wears a pool-table green vest??

I agree with mimi. It’s funny that a "kid" would make a comment about what looks like high school, and what he feels constitutes maturity. Who cares what you carry gym clothes in? That’s just silly. Further, I, along with many other people, use a backpack. It’s almost standard gear of many "grown ups" in large cities across the country and the world. Take a little trip to NYC, SF, Seattle, London, Paris, and tell me backpacks are just for teens.

I can go along with the pilgrim square-toe shoes comment. Anyone who reads up on fashion knows those went out of vogue several years ago. (Read...not a novel observation kid.)

I knew this guy was a student. Knowing that I should cut him a little slack (no pun intended), but since this was posted for opinion, here’s mine.

Perfect cut? I don’t think so. I’m all for flat-fronts, but his pants (and his coat) look a couple sizes too small. You can see the his what’s in his pockets. That’s not attractive. To his credit, the break on his slacks is perfect.

Perhaps it’s more of that English look, but I don’t think it’s a winner. The green is nice, but I’ve never really been one for v-neck sweaters under jackets. (Kinda of looks like frumpy former Rep. Jim Leach of Iowa.)

Finally, his shoes could use a good shine, or at least a touch up around the soles.

Adults with backpacks may be offensive to this dandy, but if you’ve got to commute any distance by foot and carry items they’re a godsend. Any doctor and chiropractor will say the same, as long as you wear it correctly, as in over both shoulders. Distributes the weight evenly and no strain on one shoulder.
