Sidewalk Style: Stay-Cool Edition

Over the steamy weekend, we spotted a simple look that beats the heat.

By Rachel Cothran

Gizelle Richard, 28
Works in the office of DC’s chief financial officer

What she’s wearing: J. Crew dress, BCBG sandals.

Why did you pick out this dress today?  “For summer, there’s nothing better than J. Crew and a little seersucker. I picked this dress out because I had church, then brunch here at Vinoteca.”

Tell me about your style. “Preppy-sporty. I shop at Banana Republic, J. Crew, and Ann Taylor.”

Do you think Washington is changing, style-wise?
“I live along the H Street, Northeast, corridor, and there are a lot of hipsters in that area. I don’t know if I buy into that style, but it’s there. I want to work on my style. I have great aspirations!”

Rachel says:
When summer strikes in Washington—with its humidity and searing temperatures—it’s best to keep things simple. Gizelle’s white seersucker dress is at once elegant and cool—literally.

You all are completely misinterpreting the term “style”.

“Style” is an individuals own take on self expression. Fashion is a guide for style, not the other way around.

What’s “in fashion” is not always incorporated into someone’s individual style.

Style is applying ones own personal touches to their sense of fashion.

The “Preppy-sporty” look this girl is going for is her own personal style!

The name of this blog is called “Sidewalk Style”

I completely agree with Di, this is embarrassing. There is no way this is sidewalk style, even for DC, and it sure wasn’t worth stopping for. Her dress doesn’t even fit- too big and too long. Come on, you can do better than this.

Go girl!

I really wonder who gasps at the sight of some one wearing plain clothes. Take a cue from The Sartorialist, who knows what style is. This has nothing to do with the girl in the picture above, she’s cute and summer ready, but I wouldn’t call her ensemble worthy of being featured on an online mag. This is why the whole world thinks of D.C. as the Hollywood for ugly people.

There’s no sense of style in this town, if it weren’t for Michelle Obama, there wouldn’t be a fashionista to talk about. Please Washingtonian, learn about fashion and style before stopping random people for your so-called "sidewalk style" feature.
