Sidewalk Style: It's All About the Accessories

We spotted a woman who likes to shop locally. Take a poll on whether her chunky accessories and chunkier shoes complement or distract from her dress.

By Rachel Cothran   Published Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Agnes Mannarelli, 46
Works for Warren Communications News

What she’s wearing: A printed cotton dress from Moo Joo Ken, a necklace from All About Jane, Frye shoes from the recently closed (so sad!) Wild Women Wear Red, and a Hobo International bag from Nana. The cool mother-of-pearl bracelet watch is Fossil.

Where do you like to shop? “I only shop in DC. I keep a running tab at Secondi because I consign so much there. When I want something new, I can just go in and get something without feeling like I’m spending money.”

What’s something you would never wear? “A Polo shirt. I’m not preppy at all.”

What do you think about style in Washington
? “When I first moved here 20 years ago, it was terrible. You went to Ann Taylor because you really didn’t have any other choice. Now there are all of these boutiques and other stores. And the young women give me encouragement!”

Rachel says: Frye makes really good-looking shoes that are somehow both elegant and bohemian. And they’re always so comfortable. I liked that she paired a filmy, delicate dress with chunkier accessories to make it look casual. Agnes is petite, so the smocking at the waist gives her great curves.

What do you think of Agnes' outfit? We want to know! Leave your thoughts and opinions in the comments below.

The watch is a little bit over the top, but the colors - and the drapery, if that’s not too heavy a word - it is all the loveliness of summer bundled up nicely into a refreshing sunny bundle. As for the woman, she looks like a poet to me.

i gotta give it a thumbs way up. too many people (especially over 40) don’t put any thought or creativity or uniqueness in their dress and style. not true at all in this case... and even though some of things are clunky, as a package it somehow manages to look great!

Love all of the outfit.

Very stylish and unique. The only thing I would change is the sunglasses (they’re too big for her nose/face).

I think the dress is nice. She’s thin and pulls it off well. The accessories, all of them, are HORRID. They are all way to big for this tiny woman.

Shoes are way too chunky for a light, breezy dress like that. They bring the eyes down instead of on the outfit and its wearer. Everything else is great though.

Oh Agnes you are so f ing gorgeous i cant stand it. Leave that city behind and come to New York with that sense of style where you will completely fit right in. Mark and I could use a little Ag in our lives.

and the shoes... perfect match and comfortable too!

LOVE the filmy dress
HATE all the accessories, incl. the sunglasses

Agnes is always on the cutting edge and completely comfortable with her choices. I admire that. She looks great! She got those sunglasses in St. Louis. They look purrfect!

I think she looks amazing. I love the necklace with the feminine dress and the colour of her shoes works perfectly.

I’m not so crazy about the shoes but everything else is amazing...the dress has an adorable print, looks super comfortable and is very flattering. The necklace is great (my favorite piece) she carries it off perfectly and the same with the sunglasses! Agnes has style!

I think there are one too many accessories going on there - I love the necklace, watch and bag - the the shoes and sunglasses put that outfit over the top. On the other hand, she is 46?!?!? She looks DAMN good.

She looks great!!!

i want to say that she looks pretty great for 46 also! love the shoes.

She looks fabulous. Great dress Accessories work. Ditch the shoes for something skimpy.

Now how often do you walk down the street these days and see a gal who’s pulled it all together? She clearly has her own style and struts it.

Posted by: Susanna, Jul 29, 2008 01:16:17 PM

I love this dress because it’s so comfortable and light. And while I love my Frye shoes they really do not work with this outfit now that I see them in the photo. I guess it’s time to go shopping for new shoes :)
I think the necklace looks fine. If I ever lose these sunglasses I will be very sad.

Rachel, it was nice meeting you!

Love it ... with a figure like hers ... she can wear anything and look amazing!

Posted by: melanie , Jul 29, 2008 01:11:03 PM

she looks awesome. she knows how to put accessories together that always work!

Posted by: MariaC, Jul 29, 2008 01:08:12 PM

Great accessories! Especially love the Hobo bag and Fossil bracelet watch. May be hard to pull off on a larger woman.

Washington women need help! Zero fashion sense. They think accessorizing to the max means having style.

Posted by: LL, Jul 29, 2008 11:30:59 AM

CUTE overall - I love the dress and bag. I don’t mind the necklace, but the shoes seem a little too chunky to me. I love Frye, but not this style. The color is awesome though.

Posted by: Erin, Jul 29, 2008 09:55:35 AM

I like the concept of the chunkier accessories to ground the filmy dress - but somehow, the necklace gets a little lost b/c it’s so close in color to the dress, and the shoes are just not quite the right color. But props to her for the whole look - I do like it.

necklace is fine. don’t like the shoes. didn’t know that wwwred was closed. good boutique but their stuff was way too expensive!

Posted by: el, Jul 29, 2008 08:05:54 AM

Something about this outfit works for me, though I’d probably have left off that necklace. Any idea what the shoes are called? I kind of love them!
