Sidewalk Style: Bright Days Ahead
Sidewalk Style is a feature where we photograph stylish people on the street and ask them about their fashion tips and ideas. This week we caught up with a brightly-attired woman at the Adams Morgan Day Festival.

We snapped this week’s subject at the lively (and hot) Adams Morgan Day Festival. Once the sun went down, the temperatures rose as festivalgoers salsa-danced to Orquesta La Leyenda. Our subject’s bright style reflected the mood of the event.
Natalie Mitchell, 27
Director, Acelin Learning Solutions
What she’s wearing: A homemade tunic-style top, tights from Topshop in London—“I came here when I was 17 for school, but I go back to see family all the time”—silver flats from Shelley’s, also in London, scarf from Target, bracelets from a market in Brooklyn.
Describe your style. “Well, definitely bright and purposeful. I never just throw anything on because I like my clothes to reflect my mood. I have a very optimistic view on things, so I guess that’s why everything is bright and colorful.”
Do you make a lot of your own clothes? “I make about 50 percent of my clothes. I’ll get together with friends and they’ll say, ‘Did you make that this morning?’ Right now I’m working on a wedding dress for a friend.”
Who carries clothes that you like? “Pink November. I go there for inspiration and then go home and make it. I like Anthropologie, and I’ll buy things on sale. I get fabric at G Street Fabrics.”
What are you looking forward to wearing in the fall? “Purples and autumn orange, and this sorta burnt-mustardy yellow that I wore a lot last year. And chunky knit tights to transition summer skirts and dresses.”
Rachel says: I was really attracted to Natalie’s bright, funky look because it matches the mood of the crowd so well. She was this awesome bright swirl of color and fringe and curly hair. I love her row of bracelets, and now I’m completely inspired to learn to sew!

Well, dag, since the rest of the fam is on here, let me add my two cents.
You are beyond fierce, cousin. The style comes from your spirit, and it’s always fun to watch.
Always has been, always will be.

I met her when she was a freshman in college. She has always had a talent for fashion and clothes. If you want to know what’s hot for the season or fashion, ask her. She’s always a step ahead of everyone else. She is my daughter, Evita’s, classmate and both started and finished together at Howard. She really should be a fashion editor of a top fashion magazine!

Hummm, the color combo is familiar. I like it! She began sewing at about 10y/o, not because she was particularly poor but more-so as a means to show individuality. She has an eye for flair and loves to flaunt it in her sewing. Lucky young lady; cute, cooks, sews, speaks a couple of languages and even sings. She’ll probably hit the lotto next.
Well done; I voted thumbs up. What dad wouldn’t?

Bright, cheerful and unique - a great contrast from the put-together polished business look of the Nation’s Capital. A cosmopolitan burst of freshness from someone who is clearly not afraid to enjoy life.

You know she has a unique style all of her own and she’s proud of it. She looks fantastic.

This is why, This is why, this is why she’s hot...she’s hot cause that tatoo on her right foot is one thousand degrees celsius. She was likely blazing the ground with every step she took. I mean the outfit is crazy, but folks lets take a closer look at that tatoo...

It’s definetly difficult to not be captivated by this young lady’s style & essence. I’ve known her for what seems like a lifetime and find myself increasingly engaged in her manifestation of self via layering & coordination. If color could be heard, she’d be its song.
Make no mistake about it;
Ms. Mitchell IS fashion.

I have known Natalie for about 3 years now, and was with her while she was being interviewed at the Adams Morgan Day Festival. I think her style allows for a peek into versatility in Fashion; the kind Washingtonians need to incorporate in their Wardropes.
For artists (one which I am ) and people, Fashion should be like splashing paint on canvas or scribbling notes in a notebad. It should express mood , feelings and possibilities.. Natalie does it well!
