It’s a jam-packed spring weekend. Check out cocktails with a U2 3D screening, a kite festival, the circus, a discussion (and dancing!) with Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation, and a free film at the National Gallery of Art.
Thursday, March 27: Have you checked out the by-now-infamous Stephen Colbert portrait hanging by the bathroom in the National Portrait Gallery (Eighth and F sts., NW; 202-633-8300)? No? Then you’d better get on it—this weekend is the last it will be there before the museum takes it down from its six-week run. The museum is open 11:30 to 7 daily.
The Modernist Society, the monthly “intelligent lounging” event at Bourbon (2321 18th St., NW; 202-332-0800), this week hosts Eric Hilton, co-owner of 18th Street Lounge and half of the DJ duo Thievery Corporation. He’ll participate in a Q&A and answer audience questions; a DJ will spin afterward. The free event starts at 9 PM.
Starting at 6 in the Johnson Imax Theater at the National Museum of Natural History (Tenth St. and Constitution Ave., NW), the Smithsonian Young Benefactors host an evening of cocktails, a discussion with U2 3D producer Lisa Truitt, and a screening of the movie. Tickets ($30 for nonmembers) and details are here. Read our review here.

In this week’s Sidewalk Style, we stop a kitschy chic lawyer. Sidewalk Style is written by Rachel Cothran of projectbeltway.com.
Sapna Mehta, age—“I turn 30 in six days!” Practices corporate law at Latham & Watkins (“I heard DC needed more lawyers”)
What are you wearing? “Vintage boots from Foley + Corinna on the Lower East Side in New York City (I felt like Cinderella trying them on because they actually fit my Oompa-Loompa-size feet!); a Corey Lynn Calter dress from LuvCharlie.com; an old sheer undershirt from a source since forgotten; a vintage necklace from a vendor at one of the first Billion Dollar Babes sample sales in NYC (don’t bother going anymore—not worth it); sunglasses from a cheapo store in Sydney; tights from Topshop, underwear from . . . oh, should I stop?”
How would you describe your style? “I’d describe my style as kitschy chic—Studio 54 meets Grandma’s closet. I love irony, pairing the luxurious with the trashy, new with old, East with West—but in a convincing, noncontrived way (or so I like to think). I also love me some bling, including ultra-fake and gaudy “diamond” necklaces, old Indian costume jewelry, and vintage clip-ons. Oh, and my big curly hair—probably my best accessory.”

We hit the popular District Sample Sale on Tuesday night and managed to sneak in some photos while browsing the bargains. Check out our slide show of the event and the fashionistas who were there.
A focused shopper browses the racks at Tuesday night's District Sample Sale.
The popular District Sample Sale changed locations this spring from its former warehouse space in Georgetown to a smaller, more formal, and, we gotta say, less hip spot at the Galleria at Lafayette Centre. But the change of venue didn’t seem to matter to most of the people there—who sipped Champagne, nibbled on appetizers (M Cafe and Hudson were two spots offering tasty tidbits), and of course, shopped their hearts out. Check out our slide show of the event below.

Designers from as far away as Colombia and Ukraine showed at this year's event. Photographs by Rachel Cothran.
Fashion enthusiasts spanning all ages and nationalities packed the main hall of the French Embassy Sunday evening to cheer on the work of designers in the closing show of DC’s third annual Fashion Week. The event was created to promote the development of fashion-design professions and to mark the nation’s capital as a center for international fashion.
Executive director Ean Williams brought in designers from Africa, Italy, Atlanta, Colombia, and the Ukraine, among others. Only Williams’s own Corjor Couture and Renee France Designs represented Washington designers in the final show.

In this week’s Sidewalk Style, we stop a stylish spectator at DC’s Fashion Week shows.
Alisa Shteynshleyger, 25 Does marketing for Paris Hilton
What are you wearing? “A Marc Jacobs cardigan and shirt, Tsubi jeans, and Loeffler Randall boots.”
How would you describe your style? “Eccentric.”
Favorite designers? “Marni, Loeffler Randall, Chloé, Stella McCartney.”
What do you think about style in Washington? And what do you think about the show tonight? “I grew up here and now I live in New York. DC has a bad rap for not being fashionable, but fashion here is informed by the city . . . and DC is generally conservative.”
Favorite designer here tonight? “Tsyndyma! She is a friend of mine, and her clothes are very beautiful and wearable.”
Rachel says: My favorite thing about her outfit is the sweater. I love that she pairs the bold stripes of the sweater with a shirt that has smaller-scale, pale stripes. It adds a lot of visual interest and playful texture to the look. Her red nails add a punch of unexpected color.
