The Show Closes on the Corcoran Gallery of Art’s Greenhalgh

After an eventful four-year term, Paul Greenhalgh announced today his intention to step down as director of the Corcoran Gallery of Art. The British native is planning to return to the UK and will assume directorship at the University of East Anglia’s Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts, the Corcoran said.

How will his departure affect the Corcoran? In 2007, Washingtonian features editor Susan Baer examined Greenhalgh and the impact of his first year at the museum, looking at his expanded vision for the Corcoran and the challenges the institution faces in a city of free museums. Recent exhibitions, such as “Turner to Cézanne: Masterpieces From the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales,” have been largely successful (although that particular exhibit was obliged to close early when climate-control equipment malfunctioned), and the summer lineup includes a widely anticipated traveling exhibition of prints by Chuck Close.

Greenhalgh will remain as artistic director until November, and Fred Bollerer, the museum’s COO, will act as interim director. It isn’t the last Washington will see of Greenhalgh, though: He’ll be a remote adjunct curator of European fine and decorative arts for the Corcoran.
