Things to Do

Culture Vulture

A compilation of interesting—and, most important, free—lectures, cultural events, and more throughout the week.

Monday, August 24
Stretch it out at Pilates class at Studio Body Logic (2417 Mount Vernon Ave.)—the Alexandria studio offers free sessions at 6:15 and 8:15 tonight and next Monday, August 31. Call 703-739-7601 or e-mail studiobodylogic@earthlink.net to reserve a mat.

Tuesday, August 25
Students from the University of Maryland Theater Workshop perform a cabaret-style compilation of songs and duets from contemporary Broadway plays at the Kennedy Center’s free Millennium Stage tonight. 6 PM.

Wednesday, August 26
A sure sign that summer’s drawing to a close is the slow demise of free movie nights. Stead Park’s last outdoor screening happens tonight at 8:30 with Meet the Parents, the popular 2000 comedy starring Robert De Niro as Ben Stiller’s overbearing future father-in-law.

The International Spy Museum is great, but it can be hard to stomach the $18 price tag when every Smithsonian museum is free. Sign up for Community Night, when the permanent collection can be seen without charge. 5 to 9 PM. Click here to register.

Thursday, August 27
The popular Shakespeare Free-for-All kicks off tonight at Sidney Harman Hall. The Taming of the Shrew—the play that inspired the 1999 teen movie 10 Things I Hate About You—takes the stage at 8 PM; tickets are available at the box office starting at 6. Can’t make it tonight? No worries—the complete schedule is available here.

Friday, August 28
The hip-hop precursor and musical activist Gil Scott Heron makes an appearance at Carter Barron Amphitheater’s fifth annual DC Poetry in the Park event tonight. Head over at 7:30 PM for spoken word in a great outdoor venue.

Feeling Brave? Jump in the Punk Rock Slam Dance party backstage at Black Cat. DJs Dennman and Steve EP provide the beats, but it’s up to you to find your old combat boots. 9:30 PM; no cover.

Saturday, August 28
Harriet Tubman Elementary (3101 13th St., NW) hosts the third annual Columbia Heights Day. Enjoy live music, belly dancers, free yoga, martial-arts and capoeira demonstrations, a cupcake-eating contest (e-mail kennydubin@gmail.com to participate), a petting zoo, and more—all free. 10 to 7. 3101 13th St, NW. Visit columbiaheightsday.org for more information.

Sunday, August 29
Dance Festival DC winds down today with a slew of exciting performances. Highlights include hand dancing (click here for a video preview) at 5 PM at Fort Dupont Park (3985 Massachusetts Ave., SE), and the Navigating Nations presentation of international movement at Dance Place at 7.
