Things to Do

Shakespeare and Jazz—For Free

Looking for something fun—not to mention free and culturally stimulating—to do this week? Here are two options to try: the Shakespeare Free For All and Jazz in the Garden.

The Shakespeare Theatre Company’s production of Love’s Labor Lost is 60s-inspired.

On Thursday evening, the Shakespeare Free For All kicks off at Carter Barron Amphitheatre in Rock Creek Park (16th Street and Colorado Avenue, NW). This summer it’s a production of Love’s Labor’s Lost. But it’s not what you’d expect—the Shakespeare Theatre Company is remounting its 1960s-inspired 2006 production of the play, which features everything from go-go boots to hippies. 7:30 pm. Details here. The production goes through June 3; tickets are free and are available the day of the performance. Tickets are available for pick up at the following locations and times:

Shakespeare Theatre Company, 450 7th Street, NW, Tuesdays through Sundays beginning at noon.

Carter Barron Amphitheatre, 16th Street and Colorado Avenue NW, Tuesdays through Sundays beginning at noon.

The Washington Post, 1150 15th Street NW, Tuesdays through Fridays only, beginning at 8:30 am.

Then, starting Friday at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, and continuing every Friday through August, is the popular series Jazz in the Garden. This Friday’s kickoff features Afro Bop Alliance, an Afro-Cuban jazz group, from 5 to 8:30 pm. The concerts take place in front of the Pavilion Café, next to the grand fountain and reflecting pool. The Sculpture Garden is located at 7th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW. Free.
