It’s time for DC Restaurant Week. August 11 through 17, more than 100 restaurants offer three-course dinners for $35.08 and lunches for $20.08. At big-ticket places such as Vidalia and Charlie Palmer Steak, it’s a steal. For a list of restaurants, visit washington.org/restaurantwk.
August is also a good time to book hard-to-get tables at some of the area’s restaurants that opt out of the promotion, including DC’s Palena and Komi and Old Town’s Restaurant Eve.
Watch Tennis
The Legg Mason Tennis Classic returns to Rock Creek Park’s Fitzgerald Tennis Center August 9 through 17. Watch last year’s defending champion, Andy Roddick, take on tough competition—including 2007 runner-up John Isner and 2004 Olympic silver medalist Mardy Fish. A portion of ticket sales benefits the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation. The annual DC Comedy Fest comes to various venues August 7 through 9, including the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue, Arlington Cinema ’n’ Drafthouse, and the DC Improv. There’s comedy of all kinds: standup, sketch, improv, short films, and lots of political humor. In honor of election year, the “Politics Is Funny” panel will feature comics from The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, and the Onion Web site. August 2 through 10, DC holds its sales-tax holiday: Businesses suspend the 5.75-percent tax for shoes, clothing, accessories, and school supplies under $100. Virginia’s tax holiday is August 1 through 3: Save 5 percent on school supplies costing $20 or less or clothing and shoes less than $100. The maximums apply to individual items; there’s no limit on total spending.
