Timothy P. Carney, Washington Examiner lobbying editor and author of Obamanomics: How Barack Obama Is Bankrupting You and Enriching His Wall Street Friends, Corporate Lobbyists, and Union Bosses, will lead a book forum at the Cato Institute (1000 Massachusetts Ave., NW; 202- 842-0200). Other speakers include Uwe Reinhardt, James Madison professor of political economy at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, and Ross Douthat, a New York Times columnist. The Cato Institute’s director of health-policy studies, Michael F. Cannon, will moderate the discussion. A luncheon will follow. Noon.

Leave it to the über-hip House of Sweden to host an one of Scandinavia’s most up-and-coming music ensembles. The Peärls before Swïne Experience combines jazz, classical, and rock music with standup comedy, flute, violin, cello, and piano. 7 PM.

Just back from infinity and beyond, Mike Foreman, Leland Melvin, Randy Bresnik, and Barry Wilmore—the crew of the recent space-shuttle mission STS-129—will show a movie about their experiences and answer audience questions at the National Air and Space Museum’s Moving Beyond Earth gallery. 10:30 to 11:30 AM.
Friday, January 15
Narrative paintings in Adam de Boer’s new exhibition, “Memory Meets Imagination Halfway,” explore themes of social ritual and emerging sexuality against warm-weather landscapes. The exhibit opens at the DC Arts Center, with a reception from 7 to 9. The exhibit runs through February 21.
Saturday, January 16
Washingtonians can shape up with NBC’s annual Health and Fitness Expo at the Washington Convention Center. The free event will feature medical screenings, fitness ideas, local health representatives, and celebrity guests.
Sunday, January 17
The National Gallery of Art’s Vocal Ensemble will perform selections by Monteverdi from 1610 in the Gallery’s West Garden Court. The concert starts at 6:30.
