The European Film Festival celebrates the best of cinema from Austria to England. Opening night features Illegal, a 2010 Oscar selection from Belgium, which tells the story of a mother and her young son struggling to avoid deportation. It’s showing at the AFI Silver Theatre. Gallaudet University (800 Florida Ave., NE) is hosting the WorldDeaf Cinema Festival. There are works by both deaf and non-deaf directors, and the films revolve around hearing-impaired issues. The comedies, dramas, and documentaries hope to educate viewers about the diversity of the deaf and hearing-impaired community. Alexandria’s annual tribute to cinema features new and limited-release films in a variety of genres. This year’s offerings at the Alexandria Film Festival include Leading Ladies, a tale of mothers and daughters on the stage, and Faubourg Treme, a documentary about jazz in New Orleans, as well as 37 others. Tonight, there’s an opening reception at Torpedo Factory Arts Center with a winetasting and a screening of all the film’s trailers. The opening night party is 6 to 9 and free.
