Where & When: What to Do This Weekend

Colorful ice sculptures, comical art, a neighborhood celebration, and a chance to fight homelessness

Thursday, November 18
See the Grinch, his faithful dog Max, and all the Whos down in Whoville at “ICE! How the Grinch Stole Christmas” at National Harbor’s Gaylord National Resort. Using 2 million pounds of ice, the display recreates ten scenes from Dr. Seuss’s classic. Open every day through January 9. Purchase tickets ($13 to $24) here.

Have a more refined art experience at Cocktails With the Curator. Take a curator-led tour of the Corcoran Gallery of Art’s Salon Dore, an 18th-century French period room. Following the tour, enjoy wine, cheese, and other appetizers. 5 to 8. Purchase tickets ($30) by calling 202-812-2787 or e-mail reservations@foodartsdc.com.

Not sure what wine goes best with turkey and stuffing? Which provides the best holiday stress relief? The Carpe Vinum series at Artisphere is here to help with a wine-tasting-and-pairing lecture with local grape guru Katie Park. 6:15 to 7:30. Purchase tickets ($30) here.

Friday, November 19
Tonight is the opening of “Party Crashers” at Artisphere. The exhibit looks at the influence of comic-book art on fine art, while a companion exhibit at the Arlington Arts Center features published comics art, original pages, and works in other media. 7 PM; free.

Peruse men’s dress shirts and sip Champagne at Wink’s fall fashion event. From 6 to 8, score 20 percent off clothing from Hugh & Crye as well as the rest of Wink’s current collection. No cover.

Celebrate the best of Capitol Hill at the second annual Hilly Awards. The event, held at Eastern Market (225 Seventh St., SE), features an open bar with bartenders from Wisdom, Matchbox, and more; food from Marvelous Market and Patty Cakes; and music from local DJs. 8 to midnight. Buy tickets ($80) here.

Saturday, November 20
Give back to the community by participating in the Help the Homeless Walkathon on the Mall. The event raises money for local shelters and kitchens, and participants can enjoy performances by the Student Symphonic Orchestra of Fairfax and local cheerleading squads along the 2½-mile route. The walk begins at 9 AM. Preregister ($25) here to pick the beneficiary organization of your choice.

“Without a Home” is an Afro-fusion piece by choreographer Lesole Z. Maine examining the lives of homeless people and the debate surrounding homelessness policy. See it at Dance Place at 8. Buy tickets here.

Have a nostalgic night at DJ Trevor Martin’s ’80s dance party at Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar. He’ll also be playing hip-hop and rock. 9 PM; free.

Never heard Ukrainian or Russian folk music? Now’s your chance when Volodymyr and Natalia Marunych, bayan and domra soloists respectively, and balalaika concertmaster Andrei Saveliev play at Arlington’s Kenmore Performing Arts Center. 3 PM. Purchase tickets ($21) here.

The debate about creation versus evolution gets a sunny update in the Washington Stage Guild’s production of Darwin in Malibu. Today is the last day to catch the show at the Undercroft Theatre (900 Massachusetts Ave., NW), which features a tropical-smoothie-sipping Charles Darwin and a feuding Thomas Huxley and Bishop of Oxford.
